Foreign Affairs / Re: Jacob Zuma’s MK Party Asks Electoral Court To Order A Rerun Of May Vote by smokie(m): 7:51pm On Jun 17
Somilat:

Why? What did he do?

Corruptly enriched his friends and family. Wanted to anoint his ex-wife as his successor but that plan came apart when Cyril Ramaphosa won the presidency of the ANC in 2017. If Zuma had his way, South Africa would have been worse off.

He hasn't said exactly what he wants but I suspect he's angry with Ramaphosa because he has refused to use his influence to have the criminal charges of fraud and corruption dropped against him.

Congratulations to him but this south Africa election I don't really understand the election, how they elected president of the country.

South Africa does not vote directly for individuals, citizens vote for political parties, the biggest party, or in this instance the biggest bloc in Parliament, elects the President, Speaker and Deputy Speaker.

I need an exposition on SA election, how is ANC losing the majority despite having over 40% among others?

It's simple. The ANC has lost its outright majority. To form a government, and elect a president you need a parliamentary majority(50%+1), at 40%, the ANC de biggest party but still not big enough to singlehandedly form a ruling majority that will elect the next government, it needs smaller parties.

Present day South Africa is in constrast with the vision of President Nelson Mandela who saw all Africans as one big family and was welcoming all nationalities to live and work in south africa.

After President Mandela left Power, we have witness wicked leaders who did not share the vision of south african former president nelson mandela. We had Thabo Mbeki as President and now Jacob Zuma who did not treat immigrant with a welcoming spirit. After Mandela government left power in South Africa there remain no african brotherhood. It is just hostility against fellow africans as Black south africans blamed their economic woes on the immigrant in their midst.

President Zuma has spent the last part of his presidency promoting xenophobia in which he encourage black south african to be attacking African immigrant in their land.

This is in contrast with what other african countries especially Nigeria did for black south african especially during the days of apartheid.

They had forgotten so soon the effort of the Murtala and Obasanjo government in forcing racist south africa to end apartheid.

In Nigeria, South African business are operating peacefully, companies such as MTN, Multichoice dstv, Shoprite, etc At the end of the day this companies send huge return on their investment back to South Africa. How many Nigerian companies that are operating in South Africa?

Black South African must change from their xenophobic culture and embrace people of other nationalities. Are black south african not living peacefully in America, Europe etc

Considering the sacrifice Nigeria did for the liberation of South Africa from the shackles of apartheid, South Africa should be visa free to holders of Nigerian passport. But the difference is the case.

South African here. Nigerians should seriously get over themselves and get it into their heads that South Africa does not owe anyone, anything. There's a lot of foreigners living in South Africa and the only ones causing so much drama and anguish are the Nigerians (and to a lesser extent Zimbabweans). Just because Nigeria hosted some freedom fighters over 30 years ago does not give Nigerians the right to sell drugs in South Africa and committ crime...there's no-one from South Africa selling drugs and being a nuisance on the Lagos.

I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry these theatrics. In South Africa we say "Siyaqhuba"(loosely translated, "we're moving"wink...So if Nigerians have energy to protested in the streets, and act like baffoons that's their issue...we've moved on. There will be no commissions of inquiry, there'll be no investigation, we will move on. The only thing South Africans are demanding is that there be stricter law enforcement, especially on illegal aliens. If you don't have any papers, you have no business being in South Africa.

I don't care too much about foreign nationals in South Africa, especially those from Zimbabwe, Botswana, Mozambique and to a lesser extent Zambia and Malawi...that's our kinfolk. The one's who irritate are Nigerians, Somalians, Pakistanis and Bangladeshis who demand all sorts of special treatment, and even use South Africa as a staging post for their entry into the US or EU (mostly UK). The day these people start demanding citizenship is the day South Africans will stand up and ask that the government expel them.

paniki:

But it should be obvious that without white people SA would be a hellhole just like Nigeria. South Africans would be using life savings to buy one-way plane tickets to other better places in the world, probably places that have a majority white population. all4naija is just trying to put a point that black South Aficans would be worse than Nigerians if there were no whites in SA, it hurts him to see people who look like him elsewhere doing great things and so he consoles himself by saying it's the work of whites.

His irrational views make him forget that whites have had influence through much of the African continent, so to ask where SA would be without whites should by extension also be asked where would the African continent be without whites.

But it's so sad though. Hating on the fact that his fellow Africans are advancing can't bring about any change in his life. South Africa might not be perfect but even the poorest people here won't want to leave this place for a place like Nigeria. South Africans can't be blamed for the fact that in over 50 years of independence Nigeria has hardly developed...compared to a country like Malaysia or Indonesia which got independent around the same time.

Olodostein: Nelson Mandela, also affectionately called MADIBA is a peaceful and a good man. He spent 27years in jail fighting for freedom. He had a heart of GOLD. But he did not have inner peace. Because he wanted to please everyone. But the world is a game. You cannot please everybody; the best player wins. To keep his good memory burning and the innocence of the country flying: 'South Africa' as the name of the country should be renamed and be called MADIBALAND, as Mandela is affectionately called; then will the country experience true healing, equality and blessing for all, regardless of race, color, religion, tribe and other form of isms. OR be doomed otherwise.

His name and Image should not be put on money.

God Bless Africa kiss cool

Fortunately South Africa is a democratic country which is not dominated by one racial group. This not something that Nelson Rolihlala Mandela would want. Life will go on after he passes on. We've come to accept that eventuality.

collynzo2: on what basis did you come to that conclusion?

While Nigerians ride around on the back of motorcycles South Africans either use buses, minibus taxis, or trains when they want to get around. While Nigeria probably has one good highway, most of South Africa's national roads are well maintained.

Compared to Nogeria, South Africa is heaven.

all4naija: This is another myopic view I must disagree with. Not because it fails to address the issue of attacks on innocent people in that society but because it fails to see beyond the enclave called South Africa.

There are a lot of opportunities going on in Africa which South Africans are scampering like lab mice looking for ways to create businesses out of them. That you cannot see because you are very introvert in nature and it will continue to make you keep everything within yourself and country in this present generation of global village. I still think many blacks South Africans are not exposed enough to see beyond their nose while the intelligent white among them are going places to do business, even, as far as to Nigeria.

I am less mindful of this your particular comment as it doesn't talk about why your business men are heavily investing in West Africa as a whole if they are not actually interested in other regions than the Southern African as you claimed. Your claim has no base in whatsoever way in this argument and I take it with a pinch of salt.

The only people who are scampering to get into Nigeria are South Africa's business elite, both black and white. Have you encountered ordinary South Africans in Nigeria? I highly doubt that. I'll say it again, there are no ordinary South Africans queuing up to visit Nigeria unless its to make money, or visit TB Joshua. We're not an introverted bunch, we just don't care about Nigeria.

all4naija: There are white people in Nigeria. I haven't heard about any been eaten. It is only in your delusional mind you think Nigerians are cannibals. But, with what I saw in the videos you posted I am afraid things can never be the same with the way I view some parts of Nigeria, just like the way I view some things about South Africa.

I said it before on this thread and I'll say it again. No-one in South Africa cares, or for that matter stresses about what Nigerians, or any other country thinks about us. We only care about what happens inside our country, and our immediate neighbours (Zim, Moz, Nam and Botswana). Nigeria is a world away, and I'm yet to meet any South African who says he wants to go on "holiday" to your country. Nigerians should focus their energy on developing their country, and not worry about South Africa...we're doing okay, not stellar but okay.

That the Netherlands, and later Britain decided to colonise South Africa is something for the history books...we've had colonial oppression, apartheid, and a skewed economy which favoured white people but we're working on rectifying that and have made great progress. In 19 years of black majority rule, South Africa has done better (albeit from a higher base) in providing for its poor than Nigeria has in 50 years of independence. Nigeria has its unique set of problems, and South Africa wants to help it develop but constant suspicion, envy and open hatred won't bring about tangible change to the life of ordinary Nigerians. You country should learn from us, and not envy South Africans because ultimately the African continent will be better off when wealth is spread around, and not concentrated in a few countries.

Keep dreaming, it will never happen. Other African countries did not liberate us, all they did was host South African refugees. Not many South Africans ended up in Nigeria due to the hostility from the military dictators in the 1970s.

We've done more than enough for Nigeria, and Africa by investing in their economies, and playing host to their citizens who thank us for our hospitality by getting involved in all sorts of crimes, mostly drugs.

How in your wildest dream would you think the progress made in South Africa is the handwork of the blacks? I am yet to see any living proof of that.

This was discussed before, if not in this thread than in this forum. South Africa was not developed in a vacuum. You might not like it, and it apmay not suite your racist/xenophobic stereotypes of black South Africans but we've actually built and died for South Africa. Black South Africans may have been prevented from progressing through the apartheid but life went on. In Nigeria, it seems progress stalled as soon as the British packed up and left. I understand why many Nigerians would display envy, anger, and in some cases pure hatred towards black South Africans possibly in the belief that our freedom was attained easily. Truth be told it was not easy but also not as destructive as some of Africa's internal conflicts. There was too much at stake for everyone, and that remains the case today. Everyone is invested in South Africa and failure is not part of that plan although we might hit occasional potholes on that road, the future looks bright.

gst101: @smokie, i have nothing against gay people but you talk like there are no murder cases every where in SA.

Murder and mindless slaughter are TWO different things. I'll give you a heads-up on the crime situation in SA...most murders, around 70 percent, happens when the victim knows the perpetrator. It's highly personal and not as random as raw stats would have you believe.

If you come to South Africa and the folks you are hanging out with don't have murderous tendencies then you are sure to survive, and even enjoy your stay. On the other hand can you guarantee my safety when I visit a place like Jos, brandishing a bible? In SA we don't blow up churches, mosques or synagogues...we only get upset when President Jacob Zuma decides to have another wife.

Make a notice: A panafrican government will not tolerate any gay practice, never ever, for the sake of God and the fatherland.

And the mindless slaughter of people is part of that heritage? If African countries placed the same energy and vigor into fighting human rights abuses in the continent with which they fight imaginary gays and lesbians then this continent would be such a better place. But unfortunately African leaders, and much of the intelligentsia in Africa are misguided. There are much bigger fish to fry, so batter up, and lets get down to the real business of what is hampering Africa's progress in development.

Amen. And I rest my case. I've always said Nigerians have to stop looking outside, running away from their problems and confront those things which bedevil the development of their country. One thing I love about being South Africa is knowing that even though an accident presented us with Jacob Zuma, we can look beyond him at the bigger picture. Live goes on, and we live it. So to all my Nigerian brothers and sisters, stop obsessing about South Africa, we're doing okay with our black government no matter how much the racist will try to convince you otherwise.

Intellectually lazy? Bend to the whims of the West? Do you know any South African? Are you familiar with the country's foreign policy (Libya, Somalia, DRC)? Without white people there'd be no republic called South Africa and we'd probably be around four countries. Also if it was not for the discovery of diamonds, and then gold South Africa would not exist in it's current form. Our mineral wealth has served us well. I'm South African, so this is an interesting topic. I guess the OP started this topic out of anger towards South Africans. The subsequent discussion tells me a lot of Nigerians (the jingoistic ones) and the state of that country. South Africa might not be perfection, and our politicians might not always get it right but if you walk through this country you'll notice one thing, there's PROGRESS in improving the lives of the majority. We're still dealing with issues from our past, the wounds are too fresh. But when watching, reading the news about Nigeria one can't help but dispair.

Nigerians cannot hold SA hostage because they played a role in their struggle against apartheid.SA was very welcoming to Nigerians until we started exporting our crime, faud their, which obviously will breed resentment.
Nigeria chased Ghana nationals back in the 80's, which was a state sactioned policy. what moral right do we have for accusing SA of xenophobia.

You guys accuse the SA of being slaves to the whites, but at least they fought the unjust aprtheid system. In Nigeria, we are slaves in our own country held hostage by a very 'corrupt cabal'. Instead of quarelling with SA, let's fight our war and restore our nation to it's former glory.

I am tired of fellow nigerians wasting their energy quarelling with SA, when our country is on the verge of becoming a failed state. We boast of being 'gifted, educated' etc, yet our country is on a precipice.
Where is our President? We are spineless at even demanding he resigns, but come online to boast of being the 'most intelligent blacks'. Please, give me a break. Let's stop living a LIE.

Let's leave South Africans alone and direct the energy at solving our multitude of problems.

What more can I say. Go to any South African web forum and you won't see the amount of hate/venom expressed at Nigerians, people simply do not have the energy.

People are questioning though why, so many, Nigerians are leaving their country hoping to scrape a living in South Africa, or anywhere else for that matter, if their country is rich blessed with an abundant natural resource. The politics aside, it boggles the mind.

The other day I heard that Filipinos were hired in the petrochemical industry in Nigeria. Why are these people hired there when Nigerian has been indepedent for almost 50 years and boast exceptional universities? Whose fault is that? South Afrifans can't be blamed for the failings of the Nigerian experiment, we're started to find our feet, we're making noise but as a country we're yet to forge an identity that has been robbed of us through 300 years of occupation and 40-odd years of ideology that systemicatically discouraged blacks from aspiring to be anyting other than manual labour.
South Africa is by no means perfect, look past the skyscrapers and the chic hotels and you'll find poverty but what makes us diferent is that the government acknowledges this and makes oppertunities available for those who have been marginalised.
Nigeria could take a leaf from South Africa's book.
Foreign Affairs / Re: South African Blacks - Could It Be Inferiority Complex? by smokie(m): 12:51pm On Jan 09, 2010
To the original poster: South Africans, whether they are black, white or Indian are generally too concerned about their own lives/struggles to care about Nigerian "areaboys" beyond the occasional irritation they cause with their scams.
And no, Nigerians are generally not "hated"- if that was the case they'd killed all over the place and wouldn't be able to walk the streets.
From your post it appears you've never been to South Africa or your view of the country has been clouded by jaundiced news reports.
Here's a fact: While your home is powered by generator due to erratic power supply from NEPA, the family who lives in an iron shack have constant electricity and free primary health care.
Their children do not pay school fees and every child that finishes high school with good enough marks gets a goverment busary.
Yes, Nigerians supported the ANC but what they failed to do is support themselves to improve the lives of ordinary Nigerians so that young girls don't have to prostitute themselves in Europe and guys don't end up in foreign jails as far as China.
For all it's problems, South Africa is stable and we don't have a president who flies off overseas for medical treatment, shameful considering all Nigeria's human capital.
Our supposed inferiority complex won't make life easier for those who are exploited by foreign oil company's in the Niger Delta or Christians who can't practice their religion freely in the north of your country.
So before you start mouthing off about black South Africans, see how you can fix problems in Naija not just by "gist" but practically.
I've got lots of respect for Nigerians, growing some footballers, intellectualls, musicians coming from your country were my heroes. But in all societies one gets the arrogant, chest beating bigots who displays his nationalism either through hatred or wilful ignorance. The choice is yours.
