Politics / As Ekweremadu Presides: Lawan, Supporters Shun Senate Plenary by SuperDan1: 12:14pm On Nov 12, 2015
The crisis in the Senate over the emergence of Senator Bukola Saraki and Senator Ike Ekweremadu as Senate president and deputy president respectively worsened yesterday as some All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers boycotted plenary to protest the presiding of the session by Ekweremadu.
Ekweremadu, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senator, was elected deputy Senate president during the inaugural sitting of the Senate in June to the chagrin of APC and President Muhammadu Buhari.
Yesterday was the first time Ekweremadu would preside over plenary since his election as Senate deputy president on June 9, 2015, as Saraki was at the State House to witness the inauguration of ministers.
The APC senators, who are members of the Senate Unity Forum (SUF) that opposed the Saraki presidency and supported his rival, Senator Ahmad Lawan, said they would not subject themselves to the leadership of Ekweremadu whenever Saraki was not around.
On sighting that Ekweremadu was the presiding officer yesterday, the SUF senators walked out of the chambers while others who were about to enter turned back. Some of the senators who walked out on sighting that it was Ekweremadu that was presiding included Lawan, Oluremi Tinubu, Kabir Marafa and George Akume.
Saraki took over from Ekweremadu midway into plenary. The Secretary to the SUF, Senator Sulaiman Hunkuyi (APC, Kaduna North), in a statement, decried Ekweremadu’s presiding over plenary in a legislature dominated by the APC. It said the conspiracy against the ruling party in the Senate had been executed.
Describing the situation as a sad development, the APC senators called on party members and leaders to denounce the act. In the hand-written statement circulated to reporters and entitled, “The conspiracy against the APC finally consummated,” Hunkuyi said they would, henceforth, cease from attending any sitting presided over by the PDP.
The statement read: “We notice with joy, the inauguration of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) by Mr. President and Commander- in-Chief, Muhammadu Buhari, today, the 11th of November, 2015.
“In equal stance, we notice with grave sadness, the handover of the hallowed chamber of the Senate today to the opposition party, the PDP, by the Senate President to Ike Ekweremadu as PDP helmsman to preside over the majority membership of the APC-led chamber.
“It is a very sad development that must be denounced by all wellmeaning APC members and leaders alike. “With this, to show our protest as APC senators of the 8th Senate, we wish to announce that we shall cease to attend any sitting presided over by the PDP in an APC majority chamber of the 8th Senate.”
But in a swift reaction to Hunkuyi’s statement, Senate spokesman, Senator Sabi Abdullahi, said there was no division in the Senate. He stressed that the nation had many challenging problems, which senators should help to tackle rather than engaging in egoistic political imbroglio. Abdullahi urged Nigerians to disregard any purported conspiracy in the Senate and support it in its agenda to actualise the change agenda of the APC.
He said: “The Senate wishes to state categorically that there is no conspiracy of any nature among distinguished senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The consummation of a conspiracy is in the figment of the imagination of those behind the news release and should be disregarded by Nigerians.
“The Senate wishes to reiterate its total commitment to providing robust legislative actions to support the change agenda of Mr. President as he strives to move Nigeria to new heights.
The bi-partisan stance of the Senate has not and will not be an impediment. “The distinguished senators are happy with the inauguration of the Federal Executive Council and look forward to having harmonious, rancour-free, but inclusive and participatory relationship that has at its heart the welfare of Nigerians.
“Finally, as we await the unveiling of the policy directions of Mr. President through the members of his executive council, the Senate is, indeed, poised to work harder and better to support the emergence of a changed Nigeria of our collective dream.”

Alleged Fraud: Akpabio’s Petitioner Seeks Larmode's Resignation

Adebiyi Adedapo in Abuja

The investigation into ‎allegations of fraud allegedly committed by the Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, during his tenure as governor of Akwa-Ibom state between 2003 and 2011 has been questioned with a call for the sack of the Chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Lamorde.

An Abuja-based lawyer, Leo Ekpeyong, who petitioned the Economic And Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) ‎on the allegations, on Monday addressed a letter to President Muhammodu Buhari asking that Lamorde be relieved of his duty for lack of transparency.

"We make bold to pass a vote of no confidence on the leadership of the EFCC. Ibrahim Lamorde must resign now to pave way for an efficient but effective and courageous, incorruptible leadership," he said.

Ekpenyong expressed reservation on the investigation processes by the commission.

This OP is talking trash, you just visited lagos and you are talking as if there is no nairalander living in lagos. What happens to all the Goodluck posters pasted all over lagos. He is even wearing a wrapped yoruba hat on the poster. For your information more than 40% of lagos population is made up of igbos, calabars and other south south states so be rest assured that Goodluck will get a sizeable number of votes in Lagos.

Politics / Re: Akpabio Challenges Aggrieved Governors To Leave PDP by SuperDan1: 8:03am On Nov 26, 2013
I am beginning to wonder the type of people we have on nairaland going by some of their comments. I am not a member of any political party, but any right thinking person knows what Akpabio said is absolutely true. What is the big deal in leaving PDP to another party of your choice if you feel you are no longer comfortable with PDP?.

Charity they say begins at home, to think that a son of the land can show such disrespect to the traditional institution is unimaginable. Ngige has messed himself up bigtime. I am not an igbo person but the right thing should have been to pay homage to the traditional ruler and get his blessing before the rally. Going ahead to do a rally on the same day of the festival is something I can't comprehend.

We all know that he could only manage Westerhof players to achieve what he achieved during his period as coach, how come he was not able to inject flesh blood into the team when the team was ageing. In my opinion Westerhof is still our best coach because he built his team from scratch just like Keshi is doing.

Sports / Manchester United Make Move For Mesut Özil by SuperDan1: 10:26am On Sep 02, 2013
Mesut Özil may make a move to the Premier League, but if he does, he won't necessarily be joining Arsenal. Manchester United have apparently made contact with the players representatives and may try to sign him from under the Gunners' noses.

United nearly signed Özil three years ago, when he chose to join Real Madrid instead of the Red Devils, but he may make his way to Old Trafford now. While Arsenal seemed to be on track to sign him for more than £42 million, reports have indicated that wages could keep him from joining the Gunners and it looks as if the Red Devils are ready to pounce.

The arrival of Gareth Bale has left Özil on the outs at the Bernabeu and England appears ready to make way for him. The question is which club will pony up for him, not in transfer fee, but in wages and if Sky is to be believed, that bodes well for Manchester United.

Özil wouldn't fix any of United's problems seeing as he is not the type of central midfielder the club need, but he is a world class player who would give the Red Devils one of the most creative players in the league. There isn't a club in the world that isn't better for having Özil, but he cannot be David Moyes' only signing. A central midfielder is still the club's No. 1 priority.

For Arsenal, any signing is a priority and after reportedly coming so close to smashing their club record fee for Özil, their supporters will not take well to missing out on such a good player because of wages.
Sports / Manchester United Agree £24m Fee For Everton Midfielder Marouane Fellaini by SuperDan1: 10:17am On Sep 02, 2013
Premier League champions Manchester United have agreed a £24m fee for Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini, according to Goal.com. The report claims the clubs have a verbal understanding and are in advanced talks to bring the Belgian international to Old Trafford on deadline day.

Marouane Fellaini

However, the report adds, the future of England left-back Leighton Baines is uncertain. The defender is also a target for former Everton boss David Moyes but the Toffees value their star at £20m and United have failed to reach an agreement on that count.

According to the Express, Moyes' personal relationship with Everton chairman Bill Kenwright is likely to complete the deal for both Fellaini and Baines. It is believed both players are keen on a move to the champions and the report claims a £40m deadline day offer for the pair could convince the Goodison Park club to release their two star players, despite differences in initial valuation.

Moyes has already stated United will not be rushed into buying players on deadline day but having failed in multiple bids for Spain stars Thiago Alcantara and Cesc Fabregas and with only unknown youngster Guillermo Varela to show for their summer's transfer activities, the new man at Old Trafford's helm is under pressure to announce at least one big-name signing.

The robber that was saved on the cross with Jesus did not have any previous relationship with God, he was saved for just acknowledging the fact that Jesus was the son of God and that he died for the sins of others. I have seen men of God minister to people that have not encountered Jesus in their lives before and they come back and testify.

Sports / Re: Sunday Oliseh Replies Stephen Keshi! - by SuperDan1: 7:51am On Jul 10, 2013
Oliseh might have a point, but i personally do not fancy people criticising others openly. He knows Keshi very well and if he has any input then he should be able to talk to Keshi personally and not going public, my take is that he only wants the whole world to know that he can do Keshi's job more than him. If Keshi did not win the AFCON he would have been the first to blame Keshi for fielding the likes of Oboabona and sunday Mba against the likes of Drogba and Yaya Toure.
