What "policies" of Hillary? She can't even deliver a victory speech here in NH without reading a prepared script? Please change is over-rated? Even Hillary has jumped on the change bandwagon. i disagre with policies such as obama's plan to ban the importation of toys from china. i just prefer clintons plan for the healthcare system etc. if americans really wanted change, then they would going 4 a radical like ron paul or ralph nader. don't expect to see a drastic shift in policies. what makes u think victory speeches aren't scripted for most candidates. what next, clinton used the bradley effect to her advantage?? |

bawomol: China alone makes 70 - 80% of toys sold in the US, 60% of recalled toys from US markets in 2007 alone for health and safety reasons came from China. For a nation that cries so much about outsourcing of jobs to countries like China i am surprised that Obama's policy to ban importation of toys from China generates a negative response from you. What is the difference in Clinton's plans for the healthcare system? The same plans she could not push through in her years as a senator? |

Re: Obama For President? by bawomol(m): 5:36am On Jan 09, 2008 |
Did you know that millions of imported toys from China have had to be recalled from the US market in 2007 alone? For a nation that cries so much about outsourcing of jobs to countries like China i am surprised that Obama's policy to ban importation of toys from China generates a negative response from you. What is the difference in Clinton's plans for the healthcare system? The same plans she could not push through in her years as a senator? it generates a negative response from me because u guys are the same ones that would be bitching about inflation when u have to pay for ur goods at walmarts. a better alternative would be to pressure china to increase the safety of goods while creating more funding for inspection at the border. u don't want to piss china off by altering the trade balance(foreign policy experience right??) what makes u think obama's plan would pass in a split congress. or are we going to be blind on obama's shortcoming while going fullthrottle at hillary. |
Re: Obama For President? by Nobody: 5:44am On Jan 09, 2008 |
bawomol: Its easier to pretend that the solution to this problem is simply to "pressure" china to increase the safety of its products. The problem is 81% of counterfeit goods that end up in the US come from China. The Chinese government has very little control on these companies, we all tend to assume that all these nations have enforceable regulations like exist in the US. More funding for inspections at the border is fine but will achieve little as long as we cannot control what other countries do with these goods. We may as well ban them completely and save the money for inspection. Of course such a radical plan may not pass in the Senate, too many pple there afraid of getting the Chinese upset. |
Re: Obama For President? by bawomol(m): 5:52am On Jan 09, 2008 |
they are afraid of getting china upset because of something called diplomacy. it is stupid just to put a ban on toy imports from china. who is going to cover for the increase in production costs. trade organizations like the WTO were created to cover issues such as this. more pressure should be placed on china to fight piracy etc. what makes u think those toys won't be smuggled into the country after they are banned |
Re: Obama For President? by doyin13(m): 6:02am On Jan 09, 2008 |
But Bawomol. . .China's economic policies take the piss. They deliberately manipulate their currency to make their goods cheap. . . And besides if the American market is closed. . .where else will china be able to get a market that will compare with the US. There are a surfeit of countries around who can erect the same technical capacity in no time and satisfy the American demand at I would suggest lower costs. |

Why is it so hard to see him as just another person?? does he have to be AFRICAN AMERICAN MY gosh!! I get really ticked when the very same people who say they are against racism go on and on about someone's skin color or ethnicity. Why not see him as just another presidential candidate for crying out loud?? and same with the Clinton candidate. UGH!!! |

Then why do we do it?? I don't know about you but each time I hear the whole Barrack and then "African American" and all the comparisons, I take that as a blow actually. I mean I would rather it not be made a color issue but simply about the man; his accomplishments and his platform. Infact there are some people out there who are simply voting for his skin color cause in their warped minds they are afraid that if they do not support him, they will be labeled racists and can not bear it. Many of them do not even have a clue where the man stands on issues. We know more about Barracks roots than that same of the other candidates. There have been documentaries on where he is from in africa, about his growing up in the black /white world and so on but never same on where the others are from. There have even been debates on how black he is. COME ON!!!!arrrrgghhh!!! |

up and close, obama is a hard stance no nonsence politician, but if given d opportunity, i will not cast my vote for him, cause first i am a black man, and even though he is black, he dosn't see himself as such, he don'nt have d interest of d blacks at heart, i am not been racist here, but common, he has made many appearances on tv, and my candid evaluation is wot i\ve posted, i stand to be corrected though. |

Re: Obama For President? by Iman3(m): 2:06pm On Jan 09, 2008 |
buluti: Thanks for the straw man argument-nobody says he doesn't have any policies.Supposing one accuses, say Blair,of being dishonest,it wouldn't do to point out specific instances of honesty. No candidate is literally devoid of policies, just as nobody is literally devoid of instances of honesty. The key thing is,Obama is selling a message of "hope" and "change" that is superficial and patently meaningless. What hope, what change? I have looked at his website, his entire economic policy proposals can be found on 7 pages of PDF Files! I have asked a simple question before-what is it that Obama is going to do differently, justifying the messages of "hope" and "change", that other candidates won't?Beyond skin color, how is Obama different from other? Let me take some of your responses one by one. On Iraq Obama proposes a phased withdrawal with commitments to the number of troops that should be withdrawn periodically, the idea is to ensure Iraqi's take responsibility of their destiny and open other avenues to engage the iraqi's, because they don't want US troops on the ground why keep forcing yourself there, the hearts and minds can't be won. I suppose this is your answer to my question-how is Obama going to end the war in Iraq? Firstly, let me point out that the promise of withdrawing US troops has been made by several other candidates.Once again,Obama is no different. Beyond that,it verges on the sophomoric to claim that a phased US troop withdrawal will fulfill Obama's claims of "ending the war in Iraq".Will Sunnis stop killing Shias and vice versa if US troops withdraw? Will the battles between the Badr Brigades and the Mahdi Army end? Will al-Qaeda stop attacking Shias, moderate Sunnis and non-Muslims? How does he plan to end the various multi-layered internecine conflicts going on within Iraq, which all constitute "the war in Iraq"? It may be that what he means by "ending the war in Iraq" is simply ending US involvement in that war.Of course, withdrawing US troops will achieve the above anyway in which case people who want simply the above should vote for other candidates who promise even more rapid withdrawal leaving no single US troops in Iraq ,unlike Obama who promises to keep some US troops even after the withdrawal. Secondly on securing nuclear materials, again you are not listening because this area is one of the core changes he is talking about. Direct dialogue with supposed rogue states/axis of evil. He proposes to speak to them directly. You claim you are not a Clinton supporter and from your comments i guess you are republican the so called experience so far has led the world to be a more hostile place. Are you suggesting that simply directly talking to certain states will secure all loose nuclear materials within 4 years? This is not even worthy of a response. Finally on al-queda i wont answer that because you have listened to Bush too much. If there are no safe heavens i wonder where Al-queda would operate from. The theory of exclusion is what is feeding the extremist ideology, agreed that theres a foundation of hate in Islam but the moment Iran, Syria becomes an ally where would the breeding ground be. Look what Obama proposes is different and scares the establishment the idea of being friends with Iran and Syria is currently unthinkable and scares the establishment because the war lords would have nothing to sell. Now this is presumably your answer to how Obama will end the fight with al-Qaeda. Iran,a Shia nation that has been the victim of al-Qaeda,is your hope of corralling a Sunni organisation? How does friendship with Syria stop al-Qaeda?The Syrian Govt and al-Qaeda are sworn enemies. So,Obama will end the fight with al-Qaeda by being friends with Iran and Syria!I see, enough said |

Hmmn, Obama: great story , a bit overrated somewhat Hillary Clinton: first serious female contender albeit the undue media attention she gets in my opinion i luv em both though, they'll make great U.S presidents i feel however, Mitt Romney gets my vote over them any day. Without mentioning his impressive cred, he brings to the charisma-deficient white house the sort of charm and allure associated with past notables like Clinton and Reagan. Hope he beats the odds to win |
Re: Obama For President? by Blackcat(f): 2:48pm On Jan 09, 2008 |
First and foremost Obama will become the first Black Man to rule the US if the opposition do not dig up fake dirt on him. Which I gather they are seriously trying to dig up. Obama stands for everything the white man does not want for a Black person. Strong, Intelligent, Focused, Educated, Knows his Onions, Black man. If I had the mandate to vote I would vote for him. Thank God he is clean and over qualified. But even if he wasn't I would still vote for him because he is Black and I'm Black too. Call me a racist and you would be absolutely right because I'm, but do I care |

, I have a dream that oneday, The great Martin Luther King! all he said would eventaully come to pass. I love Hilary Clinton but i prefer Obama for President. I admire his courage and inner strength and he is going to make history if he eventually becomes President of America. But it is really going to be easy for a Camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for Obama to become America's next president. @blackcat I really feel u. |

Re: Obama For President? by loyika(m): 3:04pm On Jan 09, 2008 |
Obama! Obama! Obama!! First things first, Obama has no chance of picking the Dem ticket, As adventorous as the American voters like to portray themselves, when it comes to the crunch, they go back to their conservative nature, case in point Kerry vs GWB. The Dem caucus will have to ask themselves, "Who has a better chance of getting into the White house" A Black man, who is not even accepted by the African American community. Is very much inexperienced when it comes to foreign affair issues. Charismatic, but has no substance. Bases his policy on the mantra of change (Didn't Kerry base his campaign on the same thing ). Clinton might not be loved to the extent she thinks, but she has been there and done that (As the First Lady who held much clout in the White House). She has the full Clinton Policy team behind her, and they will turn things round in her favour as the vote/race progressses. She has the money to compete with any Republican, and can muster the necessary support, with the help of her husband. However i doubt she will be the next President of the United States. W.A.S.Ps don't vote Blacks and Women for President (JFK was an exception to this, with him being Catholic, but if you know the real story, Kennedy senior had to start from scratch to put his kids in a position which enabled them get into power, and eventually, look how it ended, with him being Killed by the Southern establishment). As for the Rep, the race is between McCain and Huckabee (Rommey is a mormon, and evangelicals will never support a mormon, no matter how nuetral he is). Naturally, Dems would not mind Mccain, as he basically swings in the center of American politics, however most republicans don't like/trust him. He only gets much respect cause of his war record, thats about it frankly. He doesn't move the christians as he is quite liberal in his views for their liking, and also has this percieved love in with the dems, which rubs most Neo-Cons the wrong way (Folks like Rush Lim and basically the whole Fox network will have a field day panning McCain). Huckabee will probably get the Rep vote, based on his conservative stance (Like Obama, most folks don't really know what he stands for). I believe when they go to North/South Carolina and other southern states, the Evangelicals will kick in, and influence who picks the ticket. Make no mistake about it, Dems hold the Congress, only because of the nonchalant nature of the evangelicals during the mid term elections, due to the scandals that began to creep into the Rep ranks. But when push comes to shove, If they see Hilary Clinton as the Dem choice, they will come out in numbers to vote republican. No one riles the conservatives like Hilary Cinton does, THEY LOVE TO HATE HER!! The campaign will be harsh and bitter, if Hilary picks the ticket, will not be that harsh if Obama picks it, but they will kill him on the inexperience issue, and work on the African Americans to alienate him. and like i said, W.A.S.Ps don't vote blacks (I doubt other minorities like the Hispanics and Asians will vote for Obama as well). |
Re: Obama For President? by Iman3(m): 3:16pm On Jan 09, 2008 |
@Loyika Its amazing that your "magnum opus" contains no mention of Rudy Guiliani, who I think is the most likely candidate to win the nomination. |
Re: Obama For President? by loyika(m): 3:30pm On Jan 09, 2008 |
I-Man I would have expected Rudy to get it, but the Dude has issues. He is strong in terms of Security, and his exploits during 9/11 made him look heroic, however, how is he going to win over the Evangelicals (Dude competes with J Lo in the marriage stakes ). And you know those southern guys hate the Northern folks, especially guys from NY and Boston (A la Kerry ) Rudy might just end up seeming too radical for their liking. If you have been watching Fox network (The mouth piece for the Neo Cons) Rudy G doesn't really move most conservatives. He is undecided on his views on Gay marriage and Stem Cells. He stands strong on Abortion and Gun rights. He is also strong on Foreign policy (Will continue in the same vein as GWB). but will he not polarise the country Huckabee might look like a "goody Too shoes", but apart from the religious angle to his nature, he comes off as harmless and a bit eccentric . Blacks and other minorities will not support Rudy G, as he is strong when it comes to Anti Immigration issues. Basically, i feel he will not find it easy to pick up the Rep ticket. Has a better chance if he goes the Ross P route and be Independent. |
