Note the alteration in the quote below. On whether people opt for colleges more than Universities, I may not be able to conclude on this to avoid hasty generalization. However, the merits a College has over a University which may influence one's decision to opt for the former include but are not limited to the following: 1.More Practicum, which gives field experience as opposed to theoretic knowledge associated with University education. 2. Lenient entry requirements, though not applicable to everyone who choses a College. 3. More coop opportunities adding to work experience. 4. More technical specialisations which have better job opportunities, e.g. Welding, drilling and safety are lucrative Engineering areas whose trainings are mainly available in colleges in addition to professional trainings. 5. Colleges offer more Diploma and Certificate programmes which benefit those that want to change fields. 6. College programmes are generally shorter, hence faster 'profit' turn-over. You can start earning money asap. 7. Employers tend to favour college graduates more because the remuneration is somewhat lower than University graduates. This is why there are more openings for college products in most sectors where both sides can work.Note however that this is common only in areas where either party is eligible for the job, and it's not a research/academic one. 8. In the western world, Universities are mainly for researchers/academics while colleges are mainly for technicians and technologists. Generally, there are more industry job openings than research/academic openings. Hope this lil input makes some clarification. vinnygod: have noticed a quite number of peepz who are aspiring for graduate study choose colleges to universities despite its expensive nature.have been wandering the factors behind this choice though done a lil research but later decided to ignore it, surprisely this question was later reawaken by a friend who came to me with same issue.please wanna throw same question here, why do people prefer C to U; what are the advantages of one over other?? 3 Likes |

slimmsyyetty: Suggestions please! If you have all your documents together, I don't think it's late to apply. You just find out what you'd have missed if you were to resume (say...10th September). A friend of mine resumed at UToronto last winter after about 3weeks lecture. She only had to copy notes ...or so (nothing serious, except missing out on their orientation week). Whatever you decide, all the best! |

Re: Travelling To Canada Part 5 by toucheli(m): 11:10pm On Jul 26, 2014 |
vinnygod:you don't to be nervous, they are people who just got thier cert and still find jobs easy, as we all know, apparently getting a job is all about competition, get those things your opponents don't have, it's simple, here are the steps to follow, 1.get into your postgraduate studies, 2.get involve in at least two volunteering groups in school that relate to your field of study. 3. get a part-time job, preferably the one that also relate with your filed of study as well..at the end of your studies you should have a good Graded cert, little working experience from the part time job, which if eventually you do well you can easily switch to a full time worker. and also a volunteering point from the school, and if you have a good personality your group members might develop a special interest on you and be willing to help you out in one way or the other after school. then you are good to go..thinking at the margin.. 4 Likes |

Re: Travelling To Canada Part 5 by harkinhola: 11:41pm On Jul 26, 2014 |
Good point Sir, I would relate Mr Vinnygod's question to "Why do people prefer some province" Just to add to what you have said Sir, I really can't say if people prefer College to University; however if he is talking based on the outcome of a research carried out, maybe we might need to check the reasons the people gave, but if it is just his view, then let me add my own opinion as well. From the conversations I have had with people, They go to Colleges mainly because they had 2.2 @ Undergraduate Level, or they want to change field of study, so getting admission into Universities seems a bit difficult. However, I heard from some people that it is better to go to a College if the aim is to get PR rather than the Studies itself, I can't prove this point, just some of the reasons I have heard. For those that chose University instead of Colleges (now am concentrating on Post graduate Students), they argue that they prefer to go for a Masters than for a PGD no matter the advantages of a PGD, because they said Masters is Masters anywhere in the world, and PGD is also PGD all over; therefore Masters gives them the flexibility of switching Countries, or getting a PHD. Some people are also beginning to argue that with a Masters degree (that is going to a University) one stands the chance to get PR easily, since Opportunity Ontario (The Ontario Nomination Program) gives preference to Masters and PHD holders. In conclusion, I think one needs to be sure of his/her goal in Canada, then choose the perfect fit. Some prefer a 2years program to a 1 year program, simply because of PGWP. Note: I am in Nigeria, so I don't know what operates in Canada, just adding my own, hope it is allowed Vinnygod, u know I am not a Guru, and the question is meant for Gurus ![]() God Bless.
