Hi all, just back from a mini-vacation in Miami, had a really good time over there!!, good to see many Nigerians taking up SAP as a career, there is still room for more consultants, many big businesses continue to purchase SAP licenses so that effectively means more job opportunities, all you need is the certification and hopefully job experience, remember SAP is a career that can take you round the world, its taken me to places far beyound my imagination, just happy i fell into SAP by accident in 1998 and have not looked back since!! dont think i can change my career at this stage and am only 36! haha, SAP continues to evolve, new emerging technologies has been added to its portfolio, they have solutions for every industry, although still in its infacy in Africa, i will suggest this is a growing market, especially Nigeria, if the country can get its act right, you will probably see more companies using this ERP software, who knows, i might even take up a contract in Nigeria, well am sure all the experienced consultants in here can answer more questions but i think if one takes their time and go through all the pages, any information, where they fit into the SAP landscape, career, salaries amongst other things will be answered |

winneijay: You really do not need ADM100, its already included in TADM10. Read the course overview and you'll realise this. |

Hi all, I am very interested in SAP certification. I need advice on which area to do, I am currently considering FICO, MM & HR. I was lucky to meet a Nigerian who is a SAP consultant who advised me that these are the hot modules. I would have preferred the FICO module but I dont have any backkground in accounting. I have a degree in Electrical Engineering and have worked in a bank for almost five years. I would like to know from those who know if this wont pose a big problem to me. I was planning to do my academy programme in India where it is much cheaper but the SAP consultant I met advised me against that and instead recommended South Africa. SA is over half a million naira more expensive than India, so I am now looking at Dubai where the programme costs a little over a million. Kindly advise if Dubai will be OK. |

With a degree in engineering, how did you end up working in a bank?? seems you did not follow your career path, your friend that advised you about the hot SAP modules will not do your prospective SAP career any justice, are you interested in SAP because of the money?? with a background in Banking, i will assume the FICO module or the SAP solution for the banking industry will be a logical path, maybe you need to go through all the threads in the SAP forum, i pointed out there seems to be a throwback to the 90s where everyone wanted to jump into IT because it was lucrative, well i hope this is not your intentions, it has taken experienced SAP consultants like myself and a few others in here at least 8-10 plus continuous hard work and training to stay on top, this is friendly advice, dont be put off, do a lot of research before you throw away your hard earned money!! |
Re: About Sap? by crispgg: 9:57am On Apr 29, 2010 |
Hi Markos, Thanks for your reply. I do see the reason in your opinion. But if you are familiar with the Nigerian job market you will be aware that the banking industry employs people from all educational backgrounds. I have friends who studied courses from anatomy, food and nutrition, law, engineering working in all the banks in Nigeria. While I am not saying that is the way it is supposed to be, that is how the Nigerian economy has turned out to be. After graduating, and facing the frustration of looking for a job in your field unsuccessfully for years, I am sure you would take the first opportunity that comes your way, moreover, the banking industry was employing massively around that time so that how myself and a lot of other people ended up in banking. Before I became a banker, I had a strong flair for IT. I am done with banking now and since I cant possibly go back directly to engineering or IT since I dont have the requisite experience. I see SAP as a viable option for me to develop a career in and grow from scratch. I am aware that you don't get the certification and start making $1000/day just like that, my findings reveal to me that its even difficult getting your first SAP job after certification. The SAP guy even told me he had to work for free for months on end, another SAP consultant told me he worked for peanuts for over a year before he got a good job. I would still appreciate your advise on the module to go for and the quality of education at the dubai SAP academy. |

Re: About Sap? by ant01: 6:15pm On Apr 29, 2010 |
not sure about dubai, i did mine in india. It was a 5wk intensive program to say d least. Eat, sleep and drink sap 4 d duration. Long hours in class receiving lectures then u have to do ur own private practise! Was worth it at d end though. I believe d level of training is same across d board for all sap academy centers as they use d same training notes. I know a few that went to SA and they have similar experiences. Wish u d best |
Re: About Sap? by crispgg: 9:50am On Apr 30, 2010 |
Thanks so much ant 01. Your reply does help clear the air for me. The main reason for my concern about the Indian SAP academy was because of the perceived difficulty in hearing Indians clearly when they speak english. Since you didnt mention anything about any problems understanding what was being taught, I will assume that there is no issue in that area. |

Meanwhile, I will also like to know the most efficient centre in terms of costs and detailed training to get an SAP certification. I currently work with a coy in Nigeria that uses SAP. I make use of the FI and BW modules but with no 'write access'. I am a Chartered Accountant. Can I get an advice on how to become an SAP guru cos I know what an Avg SAP Consultant earns here. Pls I need an advice cos any investment on SAP is very worthwhile. Regards, beebaba. |

Re: About Sap? by Felixv: 6:59pm On May 18, 2010 |
@winneijay (f) how are you,i have been off this site for a while, from what i can gather your background seems to suit the typical BASIS guru, im an SAP TECHNICAL CONSULTANT,im sure you know that already, but i also work for SAP here in the states, To pass the basis/netweaver exam you need to do two exams.one is the netweaver administration and the other is database based. You can chose between oracle maxdb db2 or ms sql. Most people chose oracle since its readily available. The netweaver administration exam is split along abap and java lines and you need to pass both sections. is it tough?, well it is,even guys who have practical experience stilll find it tough.BUT its worth it,working as an SAP technical cionsultant is fun,its a very rewarding job and the pay is not bad as well, materials!!!!! they are available but a little patience is required, in your reply give me some information about your backgound and then i can answer some more of your questions, for |
Re: About Sap? by Felixv: 7:34pm On May 18, 2010 |
this is for the BASIS GURUS i am truly biased towards the more technical aspects of SAP,writing abap code, debugging and high level troubleshooting are skills that rarely leave one. to be a good basis guy requires alot of practise.,user administration, creating backups, doing restores, running batch jobs have been defined as low level skillsets.,these can be taught in a day. Investigating memory issues, reviewing sm21 logs, resolving java issues, reading development trace files are top level skills, unfortunately the SAP exams do not teach you this. Even after becoming an SAP certified techical consultant you will not know the what a development trace file is,nor will you know how to tune an abap system not to talk of a java system. So how does one get these skills, Simple by staying true to oneself.Admit your level of expertise during interviews and don't bs, also download the SAP NETWEAVER software from sdn.sap.com and then follow the basis forums on sdn. If you chose oracle as your option during the exams then be prepared to learn the sap dbacockpit inside out,its a great tool and it is probablly alot better than oracle's oem.I have been to customer's sites where traditional oracle dbas have had to learn how to use this tool, I will answer any technical question put to me,and share any experiences as well. @neroflick how are you finding the basis studing, good luck felixv |
