As the face off between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities took another twist on Thursday, indications have emerged that the organised labour in the country would mediate  in the crisis.

The Acting Minister of Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike, had  ordered ASUU members  who had been on strike since July to return  to work or risk being fired .

However, the National President of the Trade Union Congress, Mr. Bobboi Kaigama, said in a telephone interview with our correspondent that  the Nigeria Labour Congress and the TUC would intervene in the crisis.

Kaigama and the Acting General Secretary of the NLC, Chris Uyot,  had  on Tuesday called on the Federal Government to pay the arrears of salaries  of  the striking   lecturers .

The  TUC president said on Thursday that the organised labour was preoccupied  with the resolution of the crisis and would avoid blaming either party involved in the crisis.

Kaigama, who said   he had held a discussion with his NLC counterpart, Mr. Abdulwahed Omar, on the issue, added that efforts would be made to ensure that the matter was resolved without either side conceding defeat.

He said, “Well, we have to intervene in this crisis. I have heard what has happened. The NLC and the TUC would intervene so that the conflict is not worsened.

“We don’t want to blame anybody on either side; we just want to do it in such a way that there is no winner, no vanquished. Omar and I have discussed it.”

ASUU's LETTER TO PRESIDENT JONATHAN
Date: 22nd November, 2013
His Excellency,
Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR,
The president,
Federal Republic of Nigeria,
Aso Rock Villa,
Abuja.
Through:
The Supervising Minister,
Ministry of Education,
Federal Secretariat Complex,
Abuja.
Your Excellency,
RE: RESOLUTIONS REACHED AT THE
MEETING BETWEEN FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
AND REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ACADEMIC
STAFF UNION OF UNIVERSITIES(ASUU)
CHAIRED BY THE PRESIDENT AND
ATTENDED BY THE LEADERSHIP OF THE
NIGERIA LABOUR CONGRESS(NLC), TRADE
UNION CONGRESS (TUC) OF NIGERIA HELD
AT THE STATE HOUSE ON 4th NOVEMBER
2013
Please refer to Government's letter with
reference number FME/TE/SSIM/CA/99
dated 6th November 2013 and ASUU's
letter of 8th of November 2013 on the
above subject matter. Your Excellency will
possibly recall that the two letters
conveyed highlights of discussions at the
meeting under reference as captured by
Government and ASUU respectively.
On the ASUU side, we promised that the
two letters would be duly relayed to all
branches of our union. ASUU duly fulfilled
this promise. In addition, our branches
were briefed on the understanding
conveyed to ASUU president by your
Excellency on th renegotiation of the 2009
Agreement during a telephone
conservation of Wednesday, 6th
November,2013. This was done to enable
our members take an informed decision
towards reviewing the ongoing strike
action.
The positions taken by the branches were
collated at the National Executive Council
(NEC) meeting held on 22nd November,
2013 at the Bayero University,Kano.
On behalf of NEC, I hereby convey the
Union's appreciation of the expressed
concern of your Excellency to bring an end
to the crisis occasioned by the poor
implementation of the 2009 Agreement
and the 2012 Memorandum of
Understanding (MOU) arising therefrom
through your personal intervention.
NEC would have taken a definitive decision
on ending the strike, especially in view of
your Excellency's intervention, but for
certain uncertainties, the clearance of
which would have been decisive in making
the relevant decision. These uncertainties
involve issues on which ASUU members
nationwide have strong feelings. They are
about certain gaps evident in
Government's report as presented to our
union.
Specifically, our members are requesting
that Your Execellency facilitates the
resolution of the issues as a way of
concretizing their understanding of th
agreed positions. This will involve the
following:
(a) that the N200billion agreed upon as
2013 Revitalization Fund for public
universities shall be deposited with the
CBN and disbursed to the benefitting
universities within two weeks.
(b)that the renegotiation of the 2009
Agreement in 2014 be included in the final
document as agreed at the discussion with
your Excellency.
(c)that a Non-vicctimization clause, which is
normally captured in all interactions of this
nature, be included in the final document,
and
(d) that a new Memorandum of
Understanding shall be validly endorsed,
signed by a representative of the
Government, preferably the Attorney-
General of the Federation and a
representative of ASUU with the president
of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) as a
witness.
Your Excellency, please be assured that the
union is willing to do all that is needful to
resolve the lingering crisis as soon as the
expressed observations of our members
are addressed.
Thank you.

These are not the best times for most
students of government-owned
universities in the country. They have
been reacting to the latest happenings.
While some support the directive of the
federal government, others are against
such directive.
“Giving ASUU an ultimatum might just
serve to heighten the scepticism of ASUU
towards FG’s promises,” Although I am
vexed the students are not considered.
Mary Scott, 400level student, University of
Lagos said.
“Are we back to the military era? Where
threat and command language are
used?” Maurice David asks on a social
media platform.
He said: “I pity this govt that lack sane
people in position as ministers. How can
government move ten steps backward
only at the point of signing agreement?
Just at the point the agreement is to be
signed government begins to issue fiat
and threats to scatter the table. This is
shame!”
For Joel Otuyelu, a student of UNILAG
“This is a serious sensational movie. I
can’t wait for the next episode. How
Jona wan turn democracy to autocracy?”
“An agreement is supposed to be
honoured if the federal government
cannot sign and seal an agreement it
reached with ASUU on November 4
2013, then the future of Private
universities is bright in this country,
”Akinpelu Tolulope, UNILAG student said.
Tolulope further stated “The goal for
ending the strike should not be to save
parents anxiety or to take pity on
students or to save lecturers’ job or to
graduate students: it is to save the
university system so that it becomes
what it is supposed to be.
“In this, ASUU should not fear an empty
threat by the federal government but
rather see itself as a vanguard-probably
the only active one-dedicated to making
the government begin to tread the path
of responsible good governance in the
administration of tertiary education in
Nigeria .”
For Hassan Aliu, an undergraduate,
“What we have in this administration are
not leaders but bunch of criminals who
think we are in the military era. Who
think their threat will put fear in ASUU to
call of the strike. This shows the
insincerity of this government. The
question here is that is Jonathan worth
to be trusted and called a leader.”
However, Ugwu Henry is of the opinion
that ASUU has bitten more than they can
chew.
“ASUU has provoked the Federal
Government. It is a pity that after so
much capitulation by the FG, ASUU is
playing with the future of Nigerian
students. ASUU has failed to be
considerate. Why should one demand for
salary when one has failed to work? I
honestly hope the FG comes down hard
on ASUU and resists any pressure to pay
wages not earned.”
In the same vein, Justin Ebaretonbofa
has this to say: “Federal govt should do
whatever they want. Nigerians are fed
up with ASUU. When you ask federal
government for anything you don’t
expect them to give u 100 per cent of
your needs.
“It has never happen that way and it
won’t happen now. ASUU is playing
politics with the future of students. The
lecturers who refuse to resume should
be sack and new ones employ. After all
there are millions of more qualified PhD
holders looking for lecturing job. Haba !”
According to Peremobowei Amakama, “I
appreciate the FG directive to ASUU.
ASUU has over-stressed the patience of
FG and also mortgaging the future of
Nigerian youths for their selfish reasons.
Let the ones that believe we must move
forward resume to class and account for
their patriotism to Nigeria.”

However, Ugwu Henry is of the opinion
that ASUU has bitten more than they can
chew.
“ASUU has provoked the Federal
Government. It is a pity that after so
much capitulation by the FG, ASUU is
playing with the future of Nigerian
students. ASUU has failed to be
considerate. Why should one demand for
salary when one has failed to work? I
honestly hope the FG comes down hard
on ASUU and resists any pressure to pay
wages not earned.”
In the same vein, Justin Ebaretonbofa
has this to say: “Federal govt should do
whatever they want. Nigerians are fed
up with ASUU. When you ask federal
government for anything you don’t
expect them to give u 100 per cent of
your needs.
“It has never happen that way and it
won’t happen now. ASUU is playing
politics with the future of students. The
lecturers who refuse to resume should
be sack and new ones employ. After all
there are millions of more qualified PhD
holders looking for lecturing job. Haba !”
According to Peremobowei Amakama, “I
appreciate the FG directive to ASUU.
ASUU has over-stressed the patience of
FG and also mortgaging the future of
Nigerian youths for their selfish reasons.
Let the ones that believe we must move
forward resume to class and account for
their patriotism to Nigeria.”

The Federal Government would give N 1.1 Trillion to public universities in the next five (5) years. The government will release N 220 Billion yearly into the sector beginning from 2014.

this according to several sources was the key component of the agreement reached on Nov 5 and that is the onli part we are aware of out of the oda components of the agreement..

Question is: what are the other components
