Hello, I am a graduate of UST in PH with a 2.43 CGPa and a 2.57 GPA. I am currently doing another BS.c here in Singapore. I applied for a b2 visa in August 2009 and i was refused only because i had not stayed up to 2years in Singapore. Currently, I have stayed for a year and 3months. My questions are: 1. I am planning to apply for my masters with my Ust transcript. Are there any schools that will accept me without GMAT or GRE? 2. Do i have to wait till my stay has reached 2 years here in Singapore before i apply? 3. Please Fellow NairaLanders can you give me cheap universities or the ones with scholarships. I would like to Hear your professional Opinons A-town, Gongo aso, femilangy, echemichael, nethacker, rachiwise since you guys are speaking from experience. All other comments are highly appreciated. Thanks |

uberino: With that kind of GPA u are still expecting to get scholarship? There are no cheap schools in USA except Community Colleges and they don't offer Postgraduate Courses.Be prepared to pay between $12k-$20k per year for tuition as a postgrad student.I don't know about the 2 years Singapore thingy but if that is the case why not come to Nigeria and apply since u can't be considered a resident in Singapore.Naija would be ur best bet. Goodluck |

uberino: First things firsts, you can apply for a student visa from singapore,if you are in singapore on a student visa or have a resident permit in singapore. Secondly, there are no cheap schools here, but there is a very good thing about schooling in Minnesota. As an international student u automatically get considered for instate tuition which is half of what international students pay else where in the states, but there are conditions. You must maintain a G.P.A of 3.5 or above, and do 25 hours of volunteer service to the community, which is really kool to me.so weigh your options and let me know, i can hook u up with skol here in minnesota. If by any chance u dont maintain the conditions for the instate schorlarship,my broda na to dey pay through ur nose remain, LMAO |

Re: General U.S.A (student) Visa Enquiries by Nobody: 9:17am On Apr 07, 2010 |
Thanks for the info oyewolejos, nethacker and femilangy. oyewolejos, don't blame me oh ![]() In this school i'm in now, i'm not even trying and i'm on a 3.2. I don't want top apply as a transfer student if not i would have used my current result. I have a student visa in Singapore and i'm a resident till 2012. Guys, u didn't mention anything about my refused B2 visa, will it raise any red flags when i go for the student visa? If yes what should i prepare for? Femi i'm thinking of applying to Minesota Moorhead for spring 2011. I'm coming to do Business IT or something Business related and u did not say if i would need to write GMAT or GRE to get admission i'll check on the site sha. Let me know what your thoughts are. One last thing, How is the weather in Minesota? is it extreme like Canada? More suggestions if any guys. |

Femilangy, What up, can you pls hook me up with a school in minnesota, i studied engineering from LAG. Can i get a grad school to study information systems/computer science/engineering for fall semester? Thanks |
Re: General U.S.A (student) Visa Enquiries by Nobody: 6:38pm On Apr 07, 2010 |
uberino: Moorhead is a good school,go ahead. You definitely need the GRE/GMAT to be admitted to any school here in minnesota, dunno 'bout any other states. The weather in minnesota is crazy,we have only 3 months of stable weather in a whole year, minnesota has borders with canada so u can imagine how extreme it gets during winter. freeman07:Try Minnesota state university Mankato,St-clouds state university st-clouds,and minnesota state university moorhead, try winona state too,but i doubt if winona offers IT degrees. I attend mankato and i am doing my masters in IT so i can give u first hand information ,if u want one. Hope this helps u guys, feel free to ask any oda info u need here in minnesota b4 i leave here ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Femi in your school as a masters student, how much do you pay for fees per year? Is IELTS or TOEFL waived off? and do international students get any tuition waivers? |
Re: General U.S.A (student) Visa Enquiries by freeman07(m): 10:26am On Apr 08, 2010 |
@femilangy, I have gone to the mankato site.my gre score is on the average. Can i still apply for masters in IT. And also for the affidavit of support. I only have a fixed deposit account of well over the tuition and living expenses. Which transcript evaluation service did you use an how much did it cost? I am about to apply online. Should I go ahead? If yes, pls tell me some other things i need to know about the school. Thanks, You are really blessed. |

Hi all, I have a question: If a masters program is 2 years, do I have to 'show' the money for tuition and living expenses for the 2 years or only show that I can afford 1 year(My sponsor doesnt have access to funds for 2 years presently) |
Re: General U.S.A (student) Visa Enquiries by freeman07(m): 10:37am On Apr 08, 2010 |
@femilangy, my undergrad gp is 2.5 of 5. Thanks |
Re: General U.S.A (student) Visa Enquiries by Nobody: 7:36pm On Apr 08, 2010 |
uberino:fees vary by faculty and program,so i advice u go on the website and check fees for the program you are interested in. freeman07:Yeah apply,i just spoke with my advisor and he says there are other criterias used in admission and not only ur GRE score or undergraduate degree,he says they also use experience in the field of IT,and ur goals statements(so make sure u really sweet mouth it,and lie a bit ![]() Hope this helps you guys, will be checking in from time to time to answer ur questions but i might reply some late as my finals is in 3 weeks. |

Concerning the payment of US visa fees at UBA, specifically the $131, do they accept naira or do they ask one to bring the naira equivalent? One can never be too sure! |

Just had a quick read up on Minnesota, sounds like a very cool city with diverse economy! Very interesting shame about the weather!! |

UBA accepts the naira equivalent of the 131$ at the current exchange rates on the day of payment. |
Re: General U.S.A (student) Visa Enquiries by kspecial: 12:42am On Apr 11, 2010 |
@femilangy, nethacker et al If one receives a university fellowship for masters, does it usually include accommodation fees? If not, then how does one get a place to stay because it might be a city or state where there is nobody u know at all. (perhaps you guys over there can share your experience and how you settled ur accommodation). Also, should the bank statement to be taken to the embassy cover other fees apart from tuition (like accommodation, books, feeding etc)? |

Being a Yankee raised and born in the U.S, I can tell you that it's pretty tough getting a visa here. If you are looking for a student visa, try to contact the schools and stay in constant communication with the Admissions Department. If you get in good with a person from the Admissions Department they may be able to expediate the visa process given you have all the requirements (money for tuition, immunizations, and transcripts). As someone mentioned before Community Colleges are the cheapest and probably the easiest to get into~ If you are looking for a tourist/visitor visa the lottery is your best bet! |
