Rivers United 3-0 Al Merrikh: Kuemian at the double to secure vital win

The Ivorian scored a first half double before Esosa Igbinoba struck in the second to subdue the Sudanese giants.

Guy Kuemian scored a brace as Rivers United defeated Al Merrikh 3-0 in the first leg Round of 32 game played on Sunday.

The Ivorian forward, who has been impressive for the Pride of Port Harcourt this season, scored twice in the first half before missing multiple chances to secure his hat-trick after the break.

A third goal arrived after half-time as Rivers continued to dominate, with Esosa Igbinoba tucking home another to cage the Sudanese outfit.

The victory puts Stanley Eguma’s side – one of the only teams still unbeaten in the competition – on the brink of qualifying for the group stage of the Caf Champions League.

Al Ahly’s Ajayi suffers muscle strain

www.nairaland.com/attachments/4991696_ajayi_jpegf77ae295ea642bc74c8e53d172ba48b5

The Nigeria U-23 star was forced off in the Red Devils’ slim victory over their South African counterpart Junior Ajayi has been confirmed injured after he was hauled off in Al Ahly’s 1-0 win over Bidvest Witsin a Caf Champions League encounter on Saturday.

The striker started the round of 32 fixture for the eight-time African champions which was settled by a 58th-minute header from Egypt international defender Ahmed Hezagy.

But in the 63rd minute, he was replaced by Walid Soliman due to a knock he picked and a statement from the club website has now identified it as a muscle strain.

"Ajayi suffers from a muscle strain after sustaining a knock during the 1-0 win over Bidvest Wits in the first leg of the CAF Champions League round of 32 on Saturday," read a statement on the club's website.

Al Ahly now face the possibility of not having the former SC Sfaxien and skipper Hossam Ghaly - also confirmed to be out as a result of ‘muscle fatigue’ - as they seek to defend their lead against the PSL high-flyers in the return leg in Johannesburg on March 17.

Players like Egwueke, Uzoenyi, Mba and Obaobona might not have left the Shores of this country if not Keshi's faith in the home based players. Egwueke's performance against South Africa when we went two goals down was amazing. He was virtually the only one in defence.

I have repeatedly said that the challenges Africans face in Europe makes it difficult for accelerated growth. So, judging players by their clubs is not an ideal situation to judge their talents.

Sunderland's Anichebe On The Brink Of Return From Injury

By Augustine Akhilomen

Forgotten Super Eagles forward, Victor Anichebe could return to face Burnley if he recovers quickly from injury.

The Nigerian striker who has formed a formidable strike partnership with Jermain Defoe, has been a big miss for the Black Cats after picking up a knee ligament injury. He provided crucial support for Jermain Defoe up front, but the Black Cats have struggled for goals in his absence.

Anichebe films while working on an exercise bike in the US city of Philadelphia. He has previously spent time in the States to maintain his fitness, and showcased a series of pictures of famous landmarks of the American city.

While his arrival at the end of the transfer window may have underwhelmed Sunderland fans, his contributions on the pitch saw them beat Bournemouth, Hull, Leicester and Watford.

David Moyes spoke this week of his hope that Anichebe, Lee Cattermole and Jan Kirchhoff will be back to play a part in the crucial fixtures in April, and the former Everton striker posted a video on his Instagram page of him in the gym, working on his fitness.

FA Cup: Iwobi Benched As Arsenal Thrash Lincoln To Seal Last Four Place

Nigerian forward, Alex Iwobi was an unused substitute as Arsenal booked their place in the semi-final of the English FA Cup after defeating non-league side Lincoln City 5-0 in their quarter-final tie at the Emirates Stadium.

Coming on the back of their disappointing 10-2 aggregate loss to German champions Bayern Munich in the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League (UCL), Arsenal started on a nervy note with the visitors threatening on a few occasions.

The home side however improved as the game went on and were rewarded with the opener from Theo Walcott in the first minute of added time in the first half.

The second half was much more straight forward as further goals from Oliver Giroud, Luke Waterfall (OG), Alexis Sanchez and Aaron Ramsey gave the Gunners ‎a 5-0 win.

The North London side have now booked their place in the semi-final at the Wembley Stadium next month alongside Manchester City, who defeated Middlesbrough 2-0 earlier in the day.

Nigeria youngish international, Oghenekaro Etebo, who plays for Turkish giant side, Fenerbahce is on the radar of English champions Leicester.

*** the article should have read '' who plays for Portuguese club CD Feirense and the Nigerian national team''***--------

A source close to the Istanbul giants told Turkish-Football that Fenerbahce representatives will fly out to meet with Oghenekaro Etebo later this month. Per-the-source, Fenerbahce plan to establish contact with Etebo during the international break in March. Fenerbahce will also send scouts to watch Etebo for Nigeria’s games against Senegal and Burkina Faso.

Fenerbahce are planning wholesale changes to their squad next season following a turbulent past 12 months. The Yellow Canaries find themselves in third place in the Turkish League and a full nine points behind leaders Besiktas.

To make matters worse, Besiktas also have a game in hand and can go 12 points clear this weekend. Meanwhile, The Sun has reported that both Arsenal and Leicester City are interested in the 21-year-old midfielder.

Super Eagles Striker Scores Brace On Debut For Chinese Club

Nigeria international Chinedu Obasi bagged a brace on his competitive debut for Shenzhen FC in their 6-0 rout of Dalian Transcendence in the Chinese League One on Sunday.

The former Schalke 04 star doubled his team’s advantage in the 32nd minute when he was released into the box before slotting in a left-footed shot.

Three minutes after the restart, it became 3-0. Obasi found himself inside the 18-yard box and finished beautifully with his right foot despite the presence of four Dalian Transcendence players.

Harold Preciado (3) and Cameroonian striker Aboubakar Oumarou also registered their names on the scoresheet for Sven Goran Eriksson’s side.

In the January transfer window, Obasi put pen to paper on a one-year contract, and Shenzhen F.C retained the option of extending the agreement for twelve months at the end of the 2017 season.

Okaka not thinking about dumping Italy for Nigeria

Stefan Okaka

by Austin Ditlhobolo

Thursday Mar 09, 2017. 14:00
Watford FC centre forward Stefan Okaka, who is still eligible to represent Nigeria, is hoping to continue playing for his country of birth, Italy.

The 27-year-old was born in the Italian city of Castiglione de Lago to Nigerian parents, who later obtained the Italian citizenship.

Okaka has four caps for Italy's senior national team, the Azzurri, but all four appearances were made in friendly games which makes him eligible for Nigeria's Super Eagles.

The strongly built striker has established himself in the English side Watford's starting line-up and he's now eyeing a place in the Italian squad according to his brother and agent Charles Okaka.

“Yet there have been no recent contact with (Gian Piero) Ventura but it’s obvious that the National Team is among the next targets, ”Okaka told Tuttomercatoweb.com.

“Stefano knows that if one works in the right way, with determination, things come by themselves.”

Three years ago, Okaka, who is a former Italy youth international, indicated that he was interested in representing Nigeria, but he was included in the Italy squad by back then coach Antonio Conte.

He made his Azzurri debut against Albania on 18 November 2014 replacing Sebastian Giovinco in the second-half. The last time he played for Italy was against Germany on March 29, 2016.

Nigerian Star Kelechi Refuses To Expose Rivers United Ahead Of CAFCL Cracker

Al-Merreikh’s Nigerian striker Kelechi Osunwa has tactically refused to give his coach the lowdown on Rivers United ahead of his side’s CAF Champions League meeting in Port Harcourt.

The prolific frontman still has a soft spot for Rivers United, having represented Dolphins for two years before moving to Sudan to link up with Al-Hilal.

“I have great memories of Port Harcourt and I am glad to be back to play against my former club even though they have now merged (with Sharks to form Rivers United), ” Osunwa said.

“It will be a great game on Sunday and we will see how it goes in the end.

“I didn’t really give tips (about Rivers United) to my coach (Diego Garzito) because most of the players are new players ”.

To get to this stage of the Champions League, Rivers United saw off Réal Bamako in the last round and did not concede in both matches.
