so the new miracle centre now is UNILAG.
Re: 87 Students Bag First Class In UNILAG by SEFAGO(m): 8:07pm On Jan 27, 2010
Interesting, but as people previously mentioned- the number of first class holders in the UK and its equivalent in America are way higher than this. And as someone mentioned if its a top school, the proportion becomes ridiculously high. In the UK first class is for the tpo 10-15% of the class which would be 200 students in a class set of 2000 people. The US, summa c.u.m laude and magna c.u.m laude (Both equivalent to a first class) are typically given to the top 25-30% of the class, probably higher for top schools.

This is unfair- incase these students try and seek studying opportunities of the shore of Nigeria, they would be at a disadvantage undecided

Exactly my point. So what's the big deal? The fact that a Unilag churns out a 87 First Class doesn't mean it's a 'miracle centre'. If anything, it's a plus for teh school's standard.

Considering the amount of fraudulency/bribery that goes on in that country, our maintaining a slight degree of skepticism about its truth deserves some pardoning, don't you think? grin
Good observation. , however this may not apply to 1st class,as this attracts a higher level of scrutiny, bth from academic & administrative structures of the academia i.e getting a 1st class anywhere in the world 'no be 'yoke' wink
Re: 87 Students Bag First Class In UNILAG by 2good(m): 8:57pm On Jan 27, 2010
You people just say nonsense because you are either average or below average students.
I am Chemical Engineering graduate of Unilag and if you must know, Unilag admit the very best set of students for its program, such that if you take an analysis of your class mate, you will discover that over 90% of them are the best students from the respective secondary schools that they came from all over Nigeria. So is that not a reason to have a very high academic standard among its students?
In my time I was the best stdent in my secondary school with A1 in maths, A1 in Physics,A1 in Chemistry, A1 in Biology, A1 inAgric science, A2 in Economics,A2 in Geography , A3 in Further Mathematics and a C5 in English yet I made a 2.1 although a good one but not a first class. As good as I taught that I was, I met better students that I really respected in my class with most of them doing very well abroad in top schools like stanford university, imperial college, university of texas, university of nottingham etc. Infact I have a class mate that graduated with distinction from laspotec before joining us in 200 level but he could not make more than 3.9 in his undergraduate. But this guy went to University of Nottingham, UK and made a distinction in his masters that he was given a full scholarship for a PhD admission.
The situation has even improved further with the introduction of the post Jamb screening and more genuinely brilliant students are getting admitted each year with the standard further improving.
Somebody mention Delsu as a comparison to Unilag. I must tell you that Delsu is a dumping ground for people that cannot even think of getting admission into the top Universities in Nigeria so there is no need to even mention that school as over 80% of the people that go ther are either average or below average.
Get the fact that the more standard a school is, the better the number of first class you'll expected to see graduating from that school as it tends to attract very brilliant students

2good just said it all!

I also finished from Unilag and I must tell you, you meet great students from great secondary schools or outstanding backgrounds in Unilag.

In my set, we had three 1st class students in my dept., one was the best student while he was in KC(Kings College) and the other two were best students from other great schools.

I tried my best to compete with them, but I could only finish with a 2:1.They proved beyond any reason doubt that they were good.

2 of them right now are on full scholarship in different schools in US and they are doing really great and making Unilag and Nigeria proud. One of them even produced a robot(with features I have to keep as a secret), his professors couldn't even believe it.

I believe these 87 students deserve it because I must tell you Unilag would not just dash out 1st class to an average student no matter who your papa be!

Na wa oh, so na UNILAG students get brain pass UNIBEN, UI, UNN, ABU, FUTO, FUTA, OAU students , BIG RUBBISH LIE Sharap them bombaclod mouth, the performance is from a relatively healthier/better organised school system and administration not directly the students.

Of course, not all Unilag students are great students. That is why you still see many Unilag students with 2:1,2:2,3rd class and even pass.

But the few that are outstanding are always very OUTSTANDING!!!
Re: 87 Students Bag First Class In UNILAG by MsTom(f): 10:47pm On Jan 27, 2010
Is that how easy it is to get first class now? I dont believe they worked for it.
Re: 87 Students Bag First Class In UNILAG by izinbizi(m): 10:47pm On Jan 27, 2010
the hype about the calibre of students specially admitted into UNILAG is not the basis for the school's overall brilliant performance. UNILAG is the wealthiest and most organised public university in Nigeria as a result of its location. It is most linked with the west and as such emulates what is obtainable oversea - administration wise. Most of the other universities are relatively remote and operate based on pretty outdated mindset on what tertiary academics ought to achieve. This is also why many private universities like convenat output similar results.

Conclusion is that its not completely a situation of extraordinarily smart kids, but also the influence of a civilised school admin.

This is great news!
I hope the lecturers in Ife and ilorin realise that their denying the student good grades snt a plus for the school image or the students.
As far as recruiters are concerned first class is first class anywhere im not sure they'll make allowance for 2:1 from ife as being equal to 1st class from lag.
Smart applicants should all be heading towards Lag wink

OAU has got a in 5.0 Elect / Elect before, so it is possible.  First class materials are very good and most of them earned it. Come to think of it they maintain scoring above 70% over the period of 4 or 5 years, that can not be achieve cheating their way thru, so we should stop hating.

Also, school computation are different, while schools like OAU divide CGPA across the board, I heard some schools, give higher weights to courses taking from part 3 upwards, that could correct some weaknesses and mistakes made in early years in the school.

Anyway, congratulations to all First Class graduates, I wish the all well, as once said by Vincent Maduka at the OAU, Faculty of Tech graduation lecture in 1989 "You guys are now solutions, go out there and find problems to solve". All the best.

If u re privileged to attend unilag, walahi, just try it,u'll see extremely gifted students who are enormously talented in the skill of managing acada with paroles, the school is not strictly for bright,poorly-exposed and socially awkward students/lectures unlike other skls, give it to unilag, the school is tough to even enter!you will anyday prefer admission to unilag than these abraka high skl(delsu),"young shall grow"unilorin, ojo high skl(lasu) and wot have u., i once met a unilag student from kano who in his set in prestigious NMS(Nigerian Military skl) was the best complaining that in his unilag class every semester produce new champion and he only topped his class once wen he was in his 200level and since then its very difficult to get to the top even though he is still doing great! The guy was seriously challenged by the enormous pressure he is facing to even get a first class even as very smart as he is,he is still on 4.3 cgpa with a session to go!
The lady with the 4.96 is a daughter of an ordinary policeman not a politician!her speech was an eloquent testimony of wot a well run skl could do to bring out the best in u.unilag 1st class no be yams abeg leave beef jare!
