nigeria will be a world power....CJN Belgore "A former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Alfa Belgore, has said that Nigeria will not only be among the world powers but among the greatest economies of the world, if the country remained stable till the next 10 years. Belgore said this in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Wednesday during a summit by members of the Ilorin Emirate under the aegis of ‘Third Estate,’ a group of professionals of Ilorin emirate origin. He said the prediction that Nigeria would disintegrate by 2015 and the Boko Haram menace were aimed at obliterating the corporate existence of the country. “If we are stable for the next 10 years, Nigeria would be among not only world powers, it would be among the greatest economies too. We have everything on the ground. There is no state in Nigeria without mineral and plenty of rainfall. We have water everywhere. We have everything to make a great country,” he said." http://www.punchng.com/news/nigeriall-be-a-world-power-if-ex-cjn/ . |

Oh! dear UN, maybe it is time for some begging. The reality is now hitting home. Where are the extra troops going to come from? UN peace force in Mali 'needs troops and equipment' United Nations (UN) The United Nations has appealed for more troops and equipment for its peacekeeping force in Mali. The UN force, which took over security duties in July, has less than half of its mandated strength of more than 12,000 military personnel. Bert Koenders, the UN's special representative to Mali, said recent attacks had been a "wake-up call". He said the force, known as Minusma, needed more resources in order to stabilise the north of the country. French forces led an operation to oust Islamist militants from the region in January. A presidential election was held in Mali in July but militant attacks have resumed in the north where separatist Tuareg rebels and Islamist fighters are based. Protect civilians Bert Koenders, the UN's special representative to Mali, Bert Koenders, the UN's special representative to Mali, says key security challenges remain A suicide bomb attack hit the northern city of Timbuktu on 28 September and an Islamist group fired shells into Gao on 7 October. "We are faced with numerous challenges," Bert Koenders told the UN Security Council. "The mission lacks critical enablers - such as helicopters - to facilitate rapid deployment and access to remote areas to ensure the protection of civilians. Troop generation will have to accelerate." The UN peacekeeping force was dealt a further blow in August by the withdrawal of a large Nigerian contingent who returned home to tackle their own Islamist insurgency. This left Minusma with less than 6,000 troops. It is due to reach full strength with 12,640 uniformed personnel by December. The UN force is replacing French troops, which intervened in January when Islamist militants threatened to march on the capital Bamako. An al-Qaeda group and its allies extended their control of the north of Mali following a coup in March 2012 but they have since been forces out of the region's major cities such as Gao, Kidal and Timbuktu. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-24560559 1 Like |

zaandrew: In order to remian stabel for 10 years you need to be stabel. Nigeria's political and cultural system is beyond you and the world's comprehension, that's why the world has continued to wrongly predict Nigeria's breakup for decades. And it will continue to be our strength till we gradually become a world power(both military and economic) Don't worry, you will envy as we march past the next 10 years with full military power. the UN thinks we are fools for ensuring peace around Africa by taking active part in peace keeping/enforcement for over 50years now without getting the spoils of war. That is why they just think they can take our Federal Republic for granted. Other Africans also behave like the UN in this regard. I do not believe Boko Haram is what made Nigeria to withdraw its troops from Mali. I believe its got more to do with international politics. You can see it from the reason we gave for our withdrawal. We are not using all of our helicopters and jets in COIN/CT. Yes, we have so many men in active duty in the UN/AU but that doesnt mean we cannot afford a batallion and some fighters and helicopter gunships to be deployed in Mali. Can you blame the FG? We cannot sacrifice so much and still be looked down upon by Africa and the UN. 1 Like |

now that the UN is begining to have problems with troops and hardware shortage, maybe they will start showing some respect. zaandrew: Guy, boko haram is a much bigger threat to west Africa than the Mali insurgency. Even boko haram helped to displace Malian soldiers during the war. Cameroon, Niger, and chad would be swept by it if Nigeria. Allows it to succeed. That's a further proof of Nigeria's military might and intelligence capabilities. Gbabe 2 Likes |

zaandrew: That is too simplistic. The UN boastfully said they would be replaced by other forces. We are waiting. For the record, we left when it shifted from an African Mission to a UN mission the same as France, although we still have some troops there. It was never about being overstretched. After all, we are continuing to rotate troops to Darfur, Sierra Leone and Liberia. Plenty of troops in reserve. There may be an element of truth in leaving because of not being in command and the troops in Mali are a useful addition to the 7th Division because of their CT/COIN training. |

Mike..ZA: You have obviously not been following the news lately with several pirates killed recently on 2 seprate occasions. Google is your pal, use it. A weak navy that sailed to Australia Nigeria navy kills 6 pirates 2013-08-28 22 Lagos - An official says Nigeria's navy killed six pirates and injured one in an attack against the outlaws expanding their territory in the Gulf of Guinea. Delta state navy spokesperson, Delightsome Yohana, said on Wednesday that pirates engaged the navy in a gun battle late on Sunday off the coast of Calabar in Nigerian and Cameroonian waters. He says Nigeria's navy fired back, killing the pirates. The wounded attacker is in custody. The operation is the latest in a string of victories for Nigeria's navy. Yohana said in the last two weeks the navy has killed 18 pirates and arrested five. http://www.news24.com/Africa/News/Nigeria-navy-kills-6-pirates-20130828 (Reuters) - The Nigerian navy killed 12 pirates in a gun battle as they tried to flee from a fuel tanker they hijacked off the coast of the Gulf of Guinea last week, the navy said on Monday. Pirates took control of the St. Kitts and Nevis-flagged MT Notre on August 15, but an emergency signal was sent to the navy and several gunships were deployed to recover the vessel, Navy Flag Officer Rear Admiral Sidi-Ali Hassan told reporters. Navy gunships caught up with the vessel and forced it into Nigerian waters but while negotiating the ship's release, the pirates tried to escape on a speed boat. The navy boats pursued but were fired upon by the hijackers. "The gun battle lasted for about 30 minutes after which they were overpowered. On taking over the speed boat, four of the militants were alive and unhurt while the rest of the pirates were killed in the crossfire," Sidi-Ali Hussan said. The crew were all rescued unharmed from the MT Notre, which was carrying 17,000 metric tons of gasoline, he said. Pirate attacks off West Africa's mineral-rich coastline have almost doubled http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/08/19/us-nigeria-piracy-idUSBRE97I0PY20130819 Improved Nigerian maritime surveillance and response cuts crude oil theft and piracy Written by Staff Writer, Wednesday, 09 October 2013 Piracy, crude oil theft and other illegal operations in Nigeria’s maritime environment are a major source of revenue leakage and the Nigerian Navy (NN) has put measures in place to ensure this sector of the national economy is properly protected. In the first seven months of this year it has seized 25 vessels suspected of involvement in crude oil theft and bunkering. That the Nigerian military has to provide protection to more than 5 700 oil wells, 9 717 km of pipeline, 112 flow stations, 16 gas plants and 126 floating platforms in the country’s maritime environment underscores the need for adequate maritime security a statement said. The Nigerian maritime arm of service is employing a three-pronged approach based on the first NN Strategic Guidance (SG-01) policy issued last October. It defines deliverables including the elimination of piracy, sea robbery and crude oil theft. Surveillance is the first priority, which has seen NN regional maritime awareness facilities installed along the Nigerian coastline to ensure adequate electronic surveillance of the nation’s coastal areas. A response initiative involving deployments of boats and/or vessels to interrogate/arrest suspicious vessels picked up by electronic surveillance is the second step in the SG-01 policy. “To improve response capability, naval presence and deterrence, the NN carried out force restructuring which included the creation of an additional operational Command, new forward operating bases (FOBs), outposts, coastal observation posts and flying units among others for increased reach to counter crude oil theft and piracy,” the statement continues. “Equally, the NN asset recapitalisation drive has resulted in acquisition of seaward defence boats and other mixes of platforms, helicopters and support facilities to enforce its statutory responsibilities. Two new offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) are under construction in China to boost the fleet. It should be noted that for capacity building one of the OPVs will be built in China and the other will be completed in Nigeria. For maintenance and ensuring availability of platforms, the upgrading of ship support and repair facilities is also being carried out by the NN. All these have greatly enhanced NN response initiative capabilities.” The third SG-01 step sees suspects handed to the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, the country’s Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Nigeria Police for prosecution. The need for and result of improved maritime surveillance and response is illustrated by the fact that 968 crude oil tankers successfully lifted more than 82 million metric tons of crude oil on behalf of the Nigerian federal government between January and September this year without a single successful attack by sea robbers or pirates. http://www.defenceweb.co.za/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=32168:improved-nigerian-maritime-surveillance-and-response-cuts-crude-oil-theft-and-piracy&catid=108:maritime-security&Itemid=233 2 Likes |

Too much yada-yada from Naai-gerians. Listen to your president declaring a state of emergency in your northern states. The objective was to "take extraordinary measures to return the affected states to normality." The troops had orders "to put an end to the impunity of insurgents and terrorists". Has this been done? No! Will it be done this year? No! Will it be done next year? No! Will it be done the year after? No! Failed, has Naai-geria. Failed, has the military. Failed, has the state of emergency. Don't tell us about the supposed death of Shekau. Tell us about the orders that your commander in chief gave having been executed. The opposite has happened. Men and women have died in detention. Refugees have been created. There is a looming food crisis. Kids have died in school - killed in retaliation for your pathetic military-sponsored vigilanteism. The killers have gone underground and are uncontrollable. Engage your brains Naai-gerians. Leave the brawn alone. agaugust: "Good people. Great Nation". This is another "sing-along" statement, not unlike the "giant of africa" story - a sing-along without any substantive foundation. Instead of working on what damaged the image of the country in the first place, Naai-geria prefers sing-alongs. Well, sorry Mr Fake man, Justice Alfa Belgore said "Nigeria will not only be among the world powers but among the greatest economies of the world, if the country remained stable till the next 10 years". You seem to have missed the bolded bit. Beeeeeg if! Given that there are no signs of stability at this point in time, your post is a bit overly optimistic. I agree with the good judge. Naai-geria does have everything. Therefore, the problem is only on the mental side. Surely? How else does one explain the failure of a country that has everything? It's a mental developmental issue, no doubt. It's the "great people" that can't make it work. Get to work. Fix the basics. Take care of your social issues; and then do "sing-alongs". ____________ http://www.economist.com/node/13579116 A NEW joke is doing the rounds in Nigeria. Too much yada-yada and stories from Naai-gerians. Facts, and pointed admissions from the commander-in-chief below. Facts, not stories and so-called "debate". ____ http://allafrica.com/stories/201310140598.html Abuja — President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday said that the if the current security challenges in the country were external, the country would have been embarrased because of the inadequacy of the nation's security forces in tackling the emerging terrorist threat. BY BEN AGANDE, 14 OCTOBER 2013 Speaking yesterday at the national praise and thanks giving service held at the Banquet Hall of the presidential villa, Abuja, President Jonathan said the challenge has rather assisted Nigeria to improve on its security apparatus.[still some ways to go, no doubt] According to him, before the emergence of the crisis, most of the nation's security agencies were relaxed and had little to offer. [still do ] According to the president, the heads of the various agencies have had cause to evolve new strategies in meeting up with the menace. "Assuming the challenges we are having were from outside, we would have been embarrassed" he said. "Sometimes, these things happen to strengthen our collective fate and make us more effective to start thinking of building more capacity" he added. President Jonathan explained that yesterday's praise worship ceremony was quite remarkable for him adding that with such prayers and commitment on the part of government, Nigeria will move forward. The President noted that it was with the same spirit that he met with Super Eagles in Addis Ababa where he challenged them to win the match against the Ethiopian team. "I told them that they must win match and lead the country to the world cup. At least to show to the world that even with the prevailing challenges we can still perform". The ceremony which lasted for about two hours was attended by renowned world artistes and gospel singers including kurt Carr and Judy Jacobs of United States of America, It was also attended by Senate President David Mark and his deputy, Ike Ikweremadu, governor of Abia state Theodore Orji and deputy governor of Anambra state. |

Henry120: If you missed the last episode of the "war in october", a documentary by aljazeera on the "yum kippur war", it is definitely a "Shame" and very unfortunate. Israel and Egypt fought to a draw in that war. Egypt is NOT the fool that south africans think they are, as at today, Egypt has the strongest military in Africa and they will wipe out South Africa in war withing a few days. Nigeria, Algeria, Ethiopia, Morocco are the 4 countries that will give Egypt a very tough battle and for Nigeria, we will hold Egypt to a stalemate/draw if the battle lasts more than 30 days, Nigerian military will re-modularize its modular weapon systems and raise a one million man army to push back Egyptian attack, the only way Egypt can defeat Nigeria is by launching an all out war, full scale attack, and lightning strike to try and overwhelm nigerian military in about 14 days. it is very hard for Egypt to launch surprise attack on nigeria even if we remove the distance barrier, the nigerian Satellite system will see any enemy long before they reach nigerian soldiers positions. Algeria, Ethiopia, Morocco and South Africa will be easy victims of nigeria's satellite/spy warfare capabilities which has been proved very strategic in modern day warfare since the Falklands war 1982 between Britain and Argentina. when the you can see your enemy and he cannot see you...you have k.illed him ! nigerian coast is absolutely impenetrable for ANY country in the world except the top 15 world military powers. South African military will be sunk, wasted, and buried in one day if they venture to attack nigerian from the ocean waters....it is nigeria's economically richest and most heavily defended military stronghold....air radars, sea radars, satellites, spy balloons, air drones, sea drones, electronic warfare measures, missiles, rockets, artillery.....and the death traps on the niger delta swamps... .....only a country that wants to be used for historical records of grand-massacre will attempt to attack nigeria from the ocean/coast/sea .
