Dapo, I think Wesley has provided the answer up there. 1, How many speeches will Sanusi prepare when virtually every other day he has one speaking engagement or the other? 2, He would not have been invited to be the Guest speaker at the convocation if he was just a Kano prince, not the CBN boss. 3, I dont think there is anything wrong in any formal material (as opposed to informal ones like email exchange with someone like me or you, or any other friend)that comes from CBN governor passing through his communications guys. He is talking on Nigeria's political economy at a public forum and surely whatever he says will be in public domain as CBN boss. Using his staff for that doesn't appear out of place to me. After all, official PAs(on company's payroll) to many Nigerian CEOs do things like paying oga's DSTV subscription, children school fees, mother's recharge cards etc In the same vein, if the CBN boss use his official telephone like to make private phone call(to his son, for example), has he breached any rule? This is a public speech by a CBN boss that will tell on the CBN as an institution itself, using CBN resources is not out of order IMO. |
Re: CBN's Lamido Sanusi Sued For Plagiarism by ektbear: 11:54am On Apr 25, 2012 |
My brother. Are these speaking engagements related to his JOB DESCRIPTION, what he was hired to do? I.e., be the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria? If so, presumably speeches are not 80% of his mandate. So how on earth does he hope to be effective at his other obligations if he spends most of his time travelling across Nigeria giving convocation speeches? Like, don't you think that hurts his effectiveness? And if not, then isn't it very questionable for him to be using huge amounts of public funds for something that is not part of his job description? I.e., spending public funds on what is essentially his private affair? That doesn't seem worrying to you? |

Jarus:I did not crosscheck but someone said above that he cited another of Dike's articles which does not in anyway absolve him of culpability in the said instance. |
Re: CBN's Lamido Sanusi Sued For Plagiarism by ektbear: 12:00pm On Apr 25, 2012 |
All I know is that I'd get into a helluva lot of trouble if I was spending funds not related to my job on giving speeches, or doing many other things which no doubt are admirable, wonderful, etc...but unfortunately not what I am being paid to do. It is the type of thing that can get you fired or reprimanded. It is arguably corruption, to be quite honest.. Who knows, maybe Nigeria is different. I guess in naija a CBN governor can spend most of his time giving speeches rather than focusing on fighting inflation, maintaining the exchange rate, etc...all the good stuff you expect central banks to do. And people will look favorably upon this rather than asking questions. 1 Like |

ekt_bear: So my question is, is any time SLS invited anywhere to give a talk, even it has nothing little or nothing to do with his official mandate as CBN head, is it still fine to use CBN resources to prepare that speech? Give it a rest you've got absolutely nothing on him. How do you define the "mandate" of a CBN governor? What's wrong with giving a speech at a convocation ceremony in ones capacity as a CBN governor and having a dept in the institution he governs prepare his speech? And what's that tripe about spending work - related funds on things unrelated to his job? What "funds" are u talking abt? Are we still on this topic or have we veered to something else? The argument of wastage of public funds appears hackneyed when it becomes an excuse to ridicule an individual out of what is increasingly looking like primordial sentiments. I don't see how an objective analyst would fault Sanusi given his defense except perhaps for poor oversight. |
Re: CBN's Lamido Sanusi Sued For Plagiarism by Ibime(m): 12:11pm On Apr 25, 2012 |
hahahaha. . . First of all, do you think these guys write their own speeches? They only edit them. Except when floating new policy proposal, SLS would not write his own speech. He will only read it and add or remove one or two things as he sees fit. Second of all, “The challenges facing the economy is ineffective institutions and dilapidated infrastructure (bad roads, erratic power supply, limited access to potable water and basic healthcare, and ineffective regulatory agencies, etc). The plethora of reforms and policies are ineffective due to institutional failure" So this is the piece of academic work he is purported to have copied? There is nothing academic about the statement. Any lay man can make this statement. At postgraduate level, serious crime is presenting someone elses data and findings as your own. Making generic statements gleaned from someone else is not a serious crime, just laziness on the part of his speech writers. |

wesley80:Is giving a convocation speech at a university part of his job description? Yes, or no?
It is the same argument. If he is diverting the labor of his staff (paid for with public funds) for private purposes... |
Re: CBN's Lamido Sanusi Sued For Plagiarism by Jarus(m): 12:19pm On Apr 25, 2012 |
The need to have time to sit on his desk/study, think through the economic challenges, look at inflation, monetary policy, exchange rate figures etc, is the more reason why he cannot be the one to be researching and preparing speeches. Yet, giving speeches on invitation, most of which, if not all, are official, is not far off from the expectations of an intellectual economic manager. His JD doesn't need to expressly state this. I think we are overflogging the issue, especially on the use of official resources for such(after all, whatever he says can hardly be separated from the institution he heads) A better argument, IMO, is that he should take the blame since he would have taken glory if it was a compliment. |

@ekt Bear, www.huffingtonpost.com/blackberry/p.html?id=1364530 The link above shows US Fed reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke giving a series of lectures at a Washington university. Is lecturing a part of the Mandate of a Fed reserve chairman? Shouldn't he be the busiest man in the financial world trying to pull the US and the rest of the world out of a seeming endless slump? |
Re: CBN's Lamido Sanusi Sued For Plagiarism by ektbear: 12:41pm On Apr 25, 2012 |
wesley80: Reading through that, at first I thought Bernanke is doing this as a private individual: "Four times starting Tuesday, Bernanke will take a break from his day job to revisit the academic life he led – and, by all accounts, enjoyed – before coming to Washington a decade ago. He'll stand before a class of George Washington University undergraduates and deliver a series of lectures on the Fed." Then I came across this: "Tim Fort, a business professor who specializes in ethics, developed the GW course in consultation with Bernanke's staff. Beyond Bernanke's lectures, Fort has enlisted about a dozen GW faculty members to help teach the course." To be honest it seems sketchy to me man...I don't feel any more comfortable with this than Sanusi's thing.. Both seem strange to me. |

Re: CBN's Lamido Sanusi Sued For Plagiarism by ektbear: 1:00pm On Apr 25, 2012 |
Lol @ "mental superiors." You have some personal issues to deal with...but hopefully you can resolve them outside of this thread. My point is simple: Don't spend public resources on things not related to your job. That Bernanke appears to be doing this is not justification for Sanusi to do the same...morality and ethics are not relative. Or at least, they shouldn't be, in my opinion. Who knows, perhaps someone will come up with a good argument for why these numerous speaking engagements (e.g., convocation speech at a private university) that Sanusi has which don't seem very related to his job description are in fact legitimate. So far I've not seen a compelling argument, though.. |
Re: CBN's Lamido Sanusi Sued For Plagiarism by Jarus(m): 1:01pm On Apr 25, 2012 |
Honourable you 'criticize' both, rather than rationalize the American's own. This is why I select people I debate with on NL. Many people will do the latter. You may share a different opinion on the propriety of these guys doing these things, but I dont think there is anything wrong it. This is a dynamic job, not some mechanical routine of coming to office, attending meetings, issuing circulars etc. |

We are now splitting hairs on time spent on delivering speeches abi, ordinary MDs of banks are asked almost every time to deliver one speech or the other talk less of the CBN governor, apparently, ekt is looking at Nigeria through his American goggles and with a little bit of dislike. I am sure the courts will throw out this one, they have cases far weightier than this pending determination, anyway, lawyers must chop sha. |

Anybody who remotely placed Sanusi Lamido Sanusi on the realm of intellectual group of people is by extension a fool. I can not consider anybody who knowingly claimed 1963 Nigerian constitution faulted Dr. Orizu for handing power to military in 1966 as an intellectual. |

If I were in the same position, I probably would dislike Nigeria more. @Jarus, I think you should stop bothering yourself about defending Sanusi. If you understand the man well, you will notice he has gotten to a stage of self-assurance in life. People like that don't need to prove anything to anybody. |

Akanbi_edu:I get your point. I have actually stopped defending him. I do so on invitation now. Two of the first few posts here read: where is Jarus to defend Sanusi? That was a direct invitation. You're very spot-on on his stage of self-assurance. He doesn't need to prove anything to anybody. I realized that much in my conversation with him yesterday evening. He was so dismissive of the allegations, so self-confident, so unruffled. More of the talk was on football(Chelsea/Barca match) than on what we set out to discuss - to show he wasn't so bothered about all that. He even said 'now, the easiest way to hit instant fame in Nigeria now to take up an issue with Sanusi Lamido Sanusi; now, everybody knows there is a Prof Dike in US' and I rolled into laughter. |

@Jarus So the guy is an Arsenal fan, how is he handling the stress because I am going grey because of those guys o, imagine Chelsea winning the Champions league, kai, impossicant. On topic, that Sanusi is a big big bigot, why did he not write his own speech himself, afterall, we pay him to know everything |

Big impossicant o. Since Barca is out, I'm shifting my support to Bayern. SLS is an Arsenal fan, Atedo Peterside Chelsea. I remember when I did interview with IBTC in 2006. When I entered Atedo's office, guess what he was discussing on telephone? Chelsea's match with Tottenham the previous day. lol. |

PhysicsQED: I don't know why some people think one has to be an ethnic bigot or "jingoist" to dislike Sanusi. Beats me too! However, you have to understand that the same people making those vacuous statements are the worst bigots in Nigeria. So they can't think any other way. They simply can't accept the fact that their man Such people are the reason Nigeria can never make it as one country. To them, some Nigerians (sokoto and Kano princes for example) are "more equal" than the rest of us. So they can never be wrong, even if the whole country is ridiculed internationally for the actions of a careless or irresponsible CBN boss. They claim to love Nigeria, but lack the most basic understanding of HOW a country can be made great. Our views are intrinsically opposed in Nigeria, hence the reason some folks are resolute in their mission to disintegrate it into manageable and rational bits and pieces. |
