(Reuters) - Ghana's President John Atta Mills has died, according to a statement sent by the president's office to Reuters on Tuesday.

"It is with a heavy heart...that we announce the sudden and untimely death of the president of the Republic of Ghana," the statement said.

It said the president, 68, died a few hours after being taken ill but no further details were given.

Learned he's been sick for a while. But his NDC Party has been covering it up (similar to the Yar Adua's case).

GHANA: President Atta Mills dies in Accra Citi FM reports that President Atta Mills of Ghana just died, following illness in Accra. The president's health had been unde r watch for some time. At this time last year, when the NDC party convention was taking place, this had raised speculations over the party possibly choosing another candidate for the upcoming general elections in December. Health issues had since then been played down. More importantly, no reports had ever sug gested the possibility of any life threatening condition.
