This is a 2011 Can-Am Spyder RS-S Bike worth $16000 as a standard without any extra options brand new. Can be bought used as low as $11000 as it is already a 4 year old model!!

Kudus to him working hard and owning one (if he indeed owns it) but the way some naija folk double prices on materialistic things is truly frightening. 8 Million for this!!!....Haba!! No wonder our senseless politicians steal Billions!!!

Good write ups no doubt....
By way of background...I studied Economics at graduate level and also an accountant....
Lived in the States a couple of years and back in Naija....
When you look at some of the policies folks in govt throw around...u feel sad for this country....This is one of those nights for me....
Yet again, we've just made the day for the folks in Benin and Togo ports....
Tariffs have never been known to work in countries with our kind of deficiencies....
The economic model we are trying to put in place is dead on arrival....
If you studied the telco sector well, u will notice how privatisation of GSM licenses opened the market space...
The simple blocks are ....fix your power sector...embark on massive infrastructural development that will discourage the need for cars on the road....fix the rails...introduce speed rail....establish lasting reforms at the ports....fix your porous borders...adopt and follow through a policy that govt and its agencies will patronize local manufacturers and before u know it...the intended objective will be met...
Just sad to see very well educated folks in govt missing the points...
U just wonder why everything has to be different in this country....
Very sad...

Absolutely excellent points!!! Working within the automotive industry in the UK, it is more than clear the model taken by the Nigerian government is dead on arrival. The basic ground work on economic stability, local manufacturing suppliers, stamping and moulding sites, engine sites, product development, transportation & electrical infrastructure and investment longevity does not currently exist to support Nigeria becoming a major car manufacturing country. We're still a long way to this and established car manufacturers readily available to invest in Nigeria are too far and few between. Sorry but approach is clearly flawed with hidden agendas!!!
Science/Technology / Re: A Local Prototype Of Track Type Excavator Made and Remotely(wired)Controlled. by c0274309: 3:31pm On Aug 05, 2013
Not a bad project and hats off to him however professionally I can't see the longevity of this project; My reasons why are Parts stamping templates can be attained from any established HGV provider or illegally over the web and anyone willing to invest on this (especially in Nigeria) will rather want to see a full size working prototype as this is a pre-defined model. Likewise its not new technology, its doesn't use renewable energy and HGVs haven't changed significantly in the last 40 years in comparison to standard road cars so its an odd one. That being said though, there is still an international market for it as a big boy toy so good luck to him and all the best!!

Naija please relax !!

Let's not brand the entire New Edition crew with the negative image of the individual Bobby Brown.

If anyone remembers Bobby Brown was practically invisible until his hit "My Prerogative" which came years after the New Edition crew split up.

Lets give New Edition which was a successful R&B group its time of day and respect or have we forgotten songs like "Candy Girl", "Cool It Down", "Mr. Telephone Man" or Ralph Tresvant's "Sensitivity".

Don't think I'll mind seeing New Edition perform live, however seeing Bobby Brown perform live and solo is a total impossibility for me!!!
Car Talk / Re: Is The Rover A Reliable Car? by c0274309: 8:13pm On Nov 10, 2011
VoodooDoll:

The Rover car company no longer exists. The salvageable versions (Land Rover and MG) have been sold to other car companies.

If you must buy Rover, get the versions that are Honda Platforms. Anything else and you may struggle to get the spare parts etc.

Statement above is spot on. The honda platforms come in 600, 620, 623, 416, & 216 etc. You may also go for the Rover 75 specifically with the BMW Engine platform which only came in form of the 2.0 litre turbodiesel. All others were unreliable. Make sure you never go for any of the Rovers with the K-Series engines as these had aluminium engine bases which overheated and damaged quite easily.

One thing though is this car is quite old now and parts stampings / production has stopped for quite sometime now.

On a different topic someone talked about all Land Rovers being reliable. Obvious that person's never used the Discovery 3 before. Unreliable and very costly to maintain
Travel / Re: Uk About To Axe Permanent Residence Permit For Legal Immigrants by c0274309: 3:22pm On Oct 04, 2011
Okay thread however various people have read so many different meanings to this without understanding the UK immigration system in totality that I honesty find some appalling………, won't mention names!!

Some on this thread have also gone off topic talking about areas not relevant to the primary topic discussed.

The thread and paper topic states

"Uk About To Axe Permanent Residence Permit For Legal Immigrants" while the reference states

"Curb on immigrimmigrant'ss to settle here as rule that allows them to stay after working for five years set for axe"

Unfortunately it is clear both the writer of this article (i.e. James Black from daily mail) and the poster of this topic are extremely limited on their knowledge of UK immigration procedures. In my words "James Black" is a complete nonentity for using such a misleading header on a newspaper as the header in itself is contradictory. For those that don't know "Dailymail" is a UK gossip and trend newspaper.
Resident Permits can never be axed as that is synonymous to saying "No migrant can attain British citizenship anymore"……….with logic this statement is absolute idiocy!!!.

The statement is referring originally to a proposal on extending the time of attaining permanent resident for legal immigrants from 5 years to 7 years and was part of a Paper Consultation launched by the Home Office Secretary back in Jun 2011 specifically focused on reducing the number of people who could apply for British Citizenship through loopholes. An exception was to apply in cases where applicants met required points against a set of criterion based on previous income earnings, Qualifications, Age and professional work experience.

This Consultation was closed on the 9th of September and nothing has since been said if it will be passed on to the House of Commons. See link below:-

http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/sitecontent/documents/policyandlaw/consultations/employment-related-settlement/

http://lifeintheuk.net/index.php/news/settlement_consultation_closes_on_9_september/_|September year rule to British naturalisation currently applies to EU migrants equally as much as it does to professional migrants who want to become British Citizens.

A trend has been noticed on EU Migrants working on the most minimal jobs, naturalising after 5 years and jumping on the UK benefits ladder without any meaningful contribution to the UK economy in the first place.  One thing we can all agree here is that loop hole needs to be reviewed fast as we can all justify the immediate rise of Eastern European migrants to the UK looking to exploit this opportunity.

The Labour party who introduced this back in the day have openly come to confirm they got it wrong and never estimated the rise of migrants from Eastern Europe.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/labour/8788109/Labour-got-it-wrong-on-immigration-says-Ed-Miliband.html

Unfortunately those on the Tier Schemes i.e. Professional & Student migrants have no choice other than meeting the points via what they pay to the UK government in terms of earnings, school fees, contributions, continued sponsored employment etc to get Visa extensions. This is in no way a tightly run ship especially due to Tier 1 migrants with statuses of being self employed however what they pay to the UK HMRC in terms taxes is what is used to validate their earning power. A Security Outlet entrepreneur with a bachelors degree who runs his own business and is able to earn more than a qualified medical surgeon is a professional equally as much as Medical Doctor with no job and 2 years work experience cannot be classed as a professional, Please do not let us argue about this as I know the naija superiority stereotype to this statement!!.

If such an action as axing permanent residence permit for legal immigrants was to ever occur, the home office will be flooded with Civil cases (by Business & Individuals) that it will cripple the UK economy at large.

NOTE TO ALL: Now you see UK Gossip Newspapers can be misleading too to make a quick buck so naija newspapers are not alone on this!!!
Phones / Re: Etisalat Slammed With A N10 Million Law Suit by c0274309: 2:10pm On Mar 09, 2011
mrtidy:

pitiful sham we live in, aren't there supposed to be authorizations for such services/actions as SIM swap? who signed it who paid for it, where there no passports taken/submitted?, no credit to the way we even buy SIM cards along the road sides, how do you prove actual owners, I wish him luck though

Mr Tidy , Your statement above summarises it all!! A very big sham.

From a Telecomms technical perspective it will be extremely difficult for Taiwo Egbon to prove he did not swap sims and here are a few reasons why :-

1. Credits are loaded via pre-paid cards of which Taiwo possibly will have thrown most away so no personally kept billing records. Etilasat will not provide their records as the case is against them so he should forget requesting these.
2. No identification Documents or formal contracts exchanged by both parties at initial purchase of sim. For all you know they can claim Taiwo stole it and he can't prove otherwise.
3. No governing body in Nigeria keeps Call data records of GSM providers so Etisalat can amend these or refuse to present these to any court. This is Sensitivie data which even the courts will find difficult to gain if requested.
4. The Courts in naija still run in an extremely backward age and have no clue on the operations of IT/Telecomm and unfortunately are deadweight to proper / correct resolution.

The only chance of the court taking this into full consideration is if there are large amounts of legal proceedings against Etisalat of such standing. Admire this is good start to making a difference however from my perspective still pointless.

That being said this may well serve as a good medium to get all others in similar status quo heard and get Etisalat get their act together.

Don't know how the system works in naija fully but in the UK with the above list against anyone it is almost guaranteed you'll end up paying high court charges and higher Solicitor fees.
Politics / Re: We Have No Money To Fix Power Sector – Jebba Power Chief by c0274309: 12:25pm On Jun 24, 2010
angry This just shows how short-sighted these leaders are. These idiots think they can continue to fool people with statements such as "there is no money to run the power sector" !!! Was the power sector ever a charity giving the average Nigerian household electricity free of charge?? Ancient traders in modern civilisation!! Isn't this an investment to be paid back over time??

Likewise what do these idiots mean by "Investment on a yearly basis" - is this a rolling 365 day investment to be agreed daily or what? How did they arrive at such a figure?

1) Who does not understand that investment has to be momentarily fixed especially for fix asset goods used for electricity provision?
2) Who does not understand that a Return on investment (ROI) on services issued to 150 million people (or more) will return figures relatively far more than what is invested (within 2 -4 years) if such service is adequately deployed in the first place?
3) Who doesn’t understand a payback period needs to exist with major investment of this magnitude with initial losses which will momentarily peak?
4) Who does not understand provision of this will increase the inbound manufacturing industry at a geometric rate and increase GDP on both residential investment and Non-residential Net investment as against importations from China, US and Dubai where importation tax is never accounted for?
5) Who does not understand Cash flow books will have to appropriately logged per transaction against these  politicians for accountability blocking most of their looting avenues?

Even if it is $100 million to be invested it will surely pay for itself (with interest) over time if implemented and deployed properly using the right people, thieving politicians!!! Has Fashola or Duke used any government investments to better the lives of people in their states? Are they continually adding government money to maintain it. These fools have absolutely no clue and might as well privatise the whole bloody Nigerian electricity sector to able competitors, We've already seen it first-hand with NITEL. Really SAD cry .
Jobs/Vacancies / Re: How Important Is Masters Grade by c0274309: 3:30pm On Jun 02, 2010
Aiming as high as possible always benefits in the long run however I personally believe what you learn during your Masters is far more important than the actual Masters grade itself (depending on your school of course wink ).

Remember at Masters Level you can only have a Distinction, Pass or a Fail. A Distinction will surely open more doors in terms of scholarships for further study or job opportunities than a Pass however you'll still need to ask yourself, Can I do everything I've learnt during my Masters practically in the real business world.

Irrespective of what grade you have Distinction / Pass (God forbid Fail) you're far better of knowing everything you're being taught during your Masters practically.

For those saying its a waste of time and money please ignore them. A Masters degree will always pay for itself once the aspired job has been achieved (especially in Nigeria where Certificates are a norm).
Sports / Re: Britain Deports Its Five Gold Medal Nigerian Hero by c0274309: 6:18pm On Mar 24, 2010
(2) Why can a UK National with dual citizenship have their UK Citizenship revoked ??

Question 2

Deprivation of citizenship (1) For section 40(2) of the British Nationality Act 1981 (c. 61) (deprivation of citizenship: prejudicing UK interests) substitute—
“(2) The Secretary of State may by order deprive a person of a citizenship status if the Secretary of State is satisfied that deprivation is conducive to the public good.”
(2) At the end of section 40A(3) of that Act (deprivation: appeal) add— “, and
(e) section 108 (forged document: proceedings in private).”;
(and omit the word “and” before section 40A(3)(d)).

The Immigration Act 1971 allows the Secretary of State to deport foreign nationals (including EC citizens), either on the recommendation of a judge after conviction of any serious offence punishable by imprisonment, or on his own initiative (whether or not the person has been convicted of an offence) on the grounds that his or her deportation is conducive to the public good.

Yes a UK National with dual citizneship can have their UK Citizenship revoked however this applies only in extreme cases where jail-term can go as high as life imprisonment and the only offence being implemented on this so far is "Terrorism". This has actaully been debated as it is seen as a get-out-of-jail free card for foreigners with issued life sentences in the UK where the full sentences do not need to be completed. UK Nationals without dual citizenship do not have this luxury.
The other case of UK nationality revocation is where evidence has been found that British Citizenship has been obtained by deception (mainly through false marriages) which usually carries a six month jail-term, a nationality revocation and automatic deportation once evidence has been provided in court.
Sports / Re: Britain Deports Its Five Gold Medal Nigerian Hero by c0274309: 6:00pm On Mar 24, 2010
I honestly wonder what all the fuss is about. !!! People who understand UK immigration rules will clearly see between the lines.

Remarkably I see 2 different things being asked here:

(1) Why is "Onwubiko" a man who represented UK and won medals up for deportation?
(2) Why can a UK National with dual citizenship have their UK Citizenship revoked??

Question 1:
The aforementioned "Onwubiko" came here in 1994. If he were legal he would have got his permanent residency either back in 1999 under UK asylum eligibility, or back in 2004 under the 10 years waiting residency duration for legal status holders (which a lot of foreign students do). He obviously was waiting for the 14 year criterion which is the waiting period only applicable to illegal immigrants. Conclusion -- He clearly was an illegal overstayer in the UK. The advantage he had was he comes from Nigeria which is still part of the Commonwealth giving him the loophole of competing for Britain (or any other commonwealth country of choice) at lower graded competitions. Sportsmen & women who did this in the past within the EU can request residential status if successful (which was actually a smart move if done with the right legal representatives / advisers) at an expense. He clearly did nothing causing him lose the opportunity of a lifetime.  shocked

He was selected for the Paralympics in Atlanta and could not go ----Why!!! Conclusively he had no legal status and as at that time the Selective authorities were unaware of it.  cry

On top of his illegal status he was caught driving after receiving a ban from 2 previous counts of careless driving causing him a five months jail term order. This in no way forms his reason for being deported as anyone having legal status in the UK with such convictions will under no circumstances face deportation. In his case it was a contributory cause, he basically handed immigration a reason to exonerate their actions to request his deportation from court. If he did not commit those offences his case will have remained with UK immigration till the 14 yr period had lapsed. Talk of shooting yourself in the foot after spending countless years waiting.  angry

By Law only legal foreign nationals can only be deported on the grounds of committing serious offences where imprisonment to a minimum of 1 year is issued. Serious crimes in this regard relates mostly to terrorism, Murder, Manslaughter, despoil, Burglary, Firearm possessions etc which can still be appealed. This does not apply to Illegal’s as once their sentence is served they will be deported immediately.

in the 15 months they were in office, they had revived abandoned projects with some already completed, done about 20 per cent of Abuja Light Rail awarded at $840 million, funded projects in the territory via the Public Private Partnership (PPP) and raised Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to N3.5 billion as against N500 million.
He also said in their 15 months in office, the administration was able to make remarkable impact in the health, education, security and transportation sectors as well as construction of roads and opening up of new districts.

Wrex:

axeman85 has a very good point. If these Banks had continued to forward fictitious and fabricated profit figures to Shareholders without proper auditing by Central Bank how long do you think it will take before the entire establishment collaspes. Remember it happened to Savannah Bank and every worker was laid off irrespective of grade.

Likewise the law supports the retrenchment of any active staff in any working establishement without any wrongful reason if they risk bankrupcy as long as such persons are offered statutory pay which they can reject during the consultation period. To be honest with you those who have worked more than 3 years with such Banks are actually losing in comparision to those who have worked less than 3 years.

In the UK Statutory pay is
1.0 week’s pay for each full year of service where age during year is 22 or above, but less than 41
1.5 weeks’ pay for each full year of service where age during year is 41+

So please leave sentiments aside. I feel bad for those who have been affected as I too was affected with the UK bank redundancies earler in the year however you must also understand the Employee Unions too have to perform and prove themselves at such times (as they too have been paid to provide this service) however 99.9% of the time the decision is irrevessible. To those affected take heart and commence with your Plan B

igbo boy:

Guy the argument is not about paying taxes, i think every GAD Damn worker in this country should pay taxes but the ISSUE is the rate, That is, is the tax burden realastic, Even in America people that get double taxed are crying left and right,

I second Igbo boy's earlier statement. Accepted people in the western world cry out when double taxed they still end up paying these taxes cos it is the law, Higher income earners get their Annual Income taxed at 40% in the UK and scream earth, wind and fire but the fact remains they still pay it or risk getting a higher payment figure or jail time.

People who are jobless and can't even afford a meal still have to pay their council tax irrespective or they risk a visit from the Baliffs with over-exaggerated sums and a further court order which could also lead to serving jail time.

As to Fashola losing foresight I totally disagree; From a logical view the article talks about a private developer's intent to build a condominium of 52 flats and pent houses (which is quite a number) in an already clustered Lekki phase 1; Could this be another strategic way of declustering Lagos residents without the influx of taking the Lagos State Govt to court which we all know is useless in naija and never time cautious.

Feels quite strange reading this as you're making a decision I had to take 6 years backs. I'll not tell you exactly which option to take as it's totally up to you however I'll give you a few pointers which may help you make your mind:

(1) Do you think you'll feel sorry if you never get the opportunity to study a Masters in the UK again with the HomeOffice changing rules like a model changes clothes.

(2) If your Contract is terminated (which is a possibility at anytime), are there any other immediate job options available for you to explore?? Remember only very few (if any at all) are made permanent in such Companies.

(3) Once you physically start earning 200K a month Will your Sponsor i.e. your popsie stop looking at you as a boy but rather like a man capable of fending for himself ?? If Yes possibly there goes your 100% freebies on sponsorship.

(4) Sorry if I'm wrong but I anticipate you're in your Mid-twenties - Consider your Age and education?? Are you prepared to study in your latter years cos it's not an easy thing to do?? Note it also gets more difficult with a family.

(5) Someone earlier asked what your goals and aspirations are? Quite very true!! What are your personal goals & aspirations? What long term benefits does the contract job Total's offering you in comparision to a Masters degree from the UK and base these against your set goals ??

If you can answer these and be true to yourself then you've get your answer.

NB: The current recession not only affects the UK but cuts across the globe - Naija inclusive (which makes getting a career profile job more difficult anywhere) however educated specialists stand a far better chance than others in such situations due to flexibility.
Sports / Re: Mikel Applies For British Citizenship by c0274309: 3:00pm On Feb 21, 2009
It's obvious many don't have a clue about immigration rules in the UK. You cannot and I repeat "YOU CANNOT" be issued British Citizenship unless you have lived in the UK for 5 years on a Working Permit Visa i.e. Tier 1, HSMP, Work Permit etc and live a further one year on an Indefinite leave to remain Visa and have a clean record irrespective of how much you earn.

The Home Office makes more money than any immigrating superstar and declare profits in billions on a yearly basis so forget how much anybody earns. There is no fast track to citizenship except through Marriage which will reduce the above process to 3 years (May change in the near future with a new citizenship bill currently in progress).

Anything other wise will lead to a civil court case against the Home office of which monetary compensation will be sought. Remember the Home office like to make money not lose it by issuing quick citizenship or compensation to individuals.

"With the economic downtown on the rise has anyone heard the Home Office say they'll be laying people off". Nope cos they're still paying bonuses like mad at the detriment of immigrants who want to come to England by any means necessary.
If they issued citizenship based on how much investments people have most of the residents in Monte Carlo will have become British citizens as well. Even the likes of Madonna and Abramovich despite millions of investment in the UK (and May I say sign Mikel’s weekly cheques) haven't completely cleared this hurdle yet.

Mikel may still have issues after completing the above years as well as he's currently got a Criminal Traffic Conviction from court which will take another 4 years to be declared spent. (It’s wrong morally as it was a mere DUI but like I said the Home Office make money from such conditions)

@ Sisi Jinx
Don't mind them, they want to eat their cake and have it. Later, they will be the one to post pix of dirty roads of Lagos. Now that someone is trying to fix it for them so that they can post cute pix, they will still talk.

@ Omo Ibo
All these tribalists have come again!!

My guys, God bless you 10 times for your statements. Should such things have existed in the first place? As for alternatives hasn't the Lagos trade fair has been in existence for years of which we all know can accommodate these bogus Oshodi traders but to generate 100% profit they decided to establish themselves on public roads and walkways.

See how long they been asking car sellers at Berger along Tin can to move to the trade air (approx 7 years ago) and they've persisted despite parking on the expressway and overhead bridge which is already causing structural damage.

As for the idiots gearing towards tribalism ----- Haba na today!!! They see red and call it blue to justify their lawless nature ---- Pls look for another excuse as Lagos indigenes were amongst the worst hit.

Someone mentioned Lagos Island Markets as well earlier in the forum!! Again na today!! Wasn't Balogun Market cleared------abi Balogun dey Badagry for your eye!! angry

Finally someone is doing something after years of mismanagement and lack of planning yet people complain.

As for those asking the government to make alternatives before clearing these so called illegal traders I ask you

1. Were these so called Oshodi traders born by the Market in the first place or didn’t they relocated there for illegal trading purposes ?

2. Are Lagos illegal markets the only place in Nigeria where people can trade successful and yield good profits. Abi other metropolitans or states no dey naija again?

Despite the large populace living in cities like New York, London, Barcelonia, Johannesburg & even Accra you still don't find market-places as lawless or unplanned as Oshodi; If the available legal Oshodi shops cannot accomodate all traders then it's for the traders to find other legal suitable locations for trade not establish themselves on the road.

Faithful Govenor abeg carry go !!, I'm based in England but will endeavor to come home and vote for you during the next elections. Finally a bit of sanity in dear Lasgidis. smiley
