This is the most unfair comparison yet. Like!! wow!, show us some street in some run down area of Nigeria, how about you show us the view of Lagos Business district just like you did that of Qatar. There's no winning with some of you though ..

jakaiso:

I understand you Bros -but not poor people. Poor people in America live in projects and trail parks or Section 8 housing.I dont expect poor people to live in such house or condos. But it should not be a big deal for someone in the middle class. The middle class is the strenght of any country that wants to develop economically. When all you all have is the poor, very poor, rich and very rich-that country is heading towards disaster.
The credit system allows the poor to graduate to get to the middle class and acts as a safety net for the rich who make lossess in business.
No one needs to pay back credit over their lifetime (though many do) thats slavery.

You can pay a car loan back in 3 years -a mortagage in 5 to 15 years. The key is financial wisdom and planning.

In my country Nigeria-unless you fall into either of these catagories: you steal, are born into wealth-or you are the type that can really husssle, take risks, generate ideas that are turned into money-most Nigerians dont build their own houses until their late 40s and 50s or buy a car until their 30s. It took one of my Uncles who was the GM of an Insurance company in the 90s 20 years ( when he was almost 60) to complete a house in Lanbe area after Sabo/Ojodu- omo onile had taken his first 2 plots of land and even now-his house is actully what he planned to be the BQ-there is still a vast plot of land left which he doesnt have the resources to complete. Another Uncle who is a Prof at LASU completed his house 2 years ago at the age of almost 65.
Whereas another Uncle ( i have 11 Uncles and Aunts on my mums side!) who was a hustler and risk taker had built his house before he was 40 in 1980 in Kaduna! Of course for my Uncle who remained in the village -having a house was no big deal.
If these Uncles (and Aunts) had had access to the credit system -they could have bought houses way back in the late 70s ( they all graduated from Universities in the 70s.)
In the USA- a 25 year old with or without a degree can buy a house-if hes 'ordinary' the house can be paid off by the time hes 55, if hes fast-he can have it paid off by the time hes 30 to 35.
And most cars are paid off in 2 to 5 years.

The credit system helps the middle class who in turn develop the economy of a country!

This is true, the credit system actually helps alot of folks in the more developed countries nonetheless there are always two sides to a story. frankly I don't believe you own any house, car, furniture etc the credit system helped you get till you're done paying for it. Funny enough thats why theres a greater hype when someone buys a 2013 Honda accord in Nigeria than in any country that has this system in place. This is because Nigerians pay hard cash for whatever they own with very few exceptions. I won't say thats the best way to go but its certainly working for us. I can't imagine paying for a house I claim to own for 15years or paying for a car for 36 months.

Finally, most Nigerians in that 25-35 don't necessarily want a house of theres, they'd rather live in a very exclusive apartment. Most of them look towards building houses when they start considering marriage or after marriage and expecting children. Theres a whole lot to discuss on this as there are so many factors that come into play but I'm sure you probably got my point. Then again I totally agree with you that the credit system helps but there are just two sides to it; its not all that perfect.
Music/Radio / Re: Lyrics of Nigerian and Foreign Songs Compared by Godogwu: 7:48pm On Jul 23, 2013
datChelseaBoy: I must state categorically that I am not trying to belittle our local musicians or badmouth them. But we often compare our local movies with the foreign ones and I think it's about time we compared our local artistes with the foreign ones. We'll do this by comparing the thing that matters most in any song which is the lyrics. I have two songs that I want us to compare: It will rain by Bruno Mars and Gobe by Davido. These are supposed to be two "love songs", but at the end of the day you'll see which one is truly a love song grin

If you have both songs in your phone, just plug in your earphones and listen to the songs while you read the lyrics. I'm sure you'll have a better idea of what I'm saying.

It Will Rain by Bruno Mars

If you ever leave me baby,
Leave some morphine at my door
‘Cause it would take a whole lot of medication
To realize what we used to have,
We don’t have it anymore.

There’s no religion that could save me
No matter how long my knees are on the floor
So keep in mind all the sacrifices I’m makin’
Will keep you by my side
Will keep you from walkin’ out the door.

[Chorus]
Cause there’ll be no sunlight
If I lose you, baby
There’ll be no clear skies
If I lose you, baby
Just like the clouds
My eyes will do the same, if you walk away
Everyday it will rain, rain, rain...

I’ll never be your mother’s favorite
Your daddy can’t even look me in the eye
Oooh if I was in their shoes, I’d be doing the same thing
Sayin there goes my little girl
Walkin’ with that troublesome guy

But they’re just afraid of something they can’t understand
Oooh well little darlin’ watch me change their minds
Yeah for you I’ll try I’ll try I’ll try I’ll try
I’ll pick up these broken pieces ’til I’m bleeding
If that’ll make you mine

[Chorus]
Cause there’ll be no sunlight
If I lose you, baby
There’ll be no clear skies
If I lose you, baby
Just like the clouds
My eyes will do the same if you walk away
Everyday it will rain, rain, rain...

[Bridge]
Don’t just say, goodbye
Don’t just say, goodbye
I’ll pick up these broken pieces ’til I’m bleeding
If that’ll make it right

[Chorus]
Cause there’ll be no sunlight
If I lose you, baby
There’ll be no clear skies
If I lose you, baby
Just like the clouds
My eyes will do the same if you walk away
Everyday it will rain, rain, rain...

No wonder no Nigerian musician has been able to win a grammy undecided

You can add your own.

This is just the height of inferiority complex, you say you don't want to belittle the Nigerian music scene but you clearly did and in a very partial way.

Now i don't have the full transcripts/ lyrics to these songs but i advise you look them up.

M.I ft praiz - Epic
Praiz- a woman's need
Darey- you're not the girl
M.i ft Becca-no away
Ice prince -more
M.i-forever
Wande coal-Ololufe
Styl plus-olufunmi
Waje- i wish
Omawumi-if you ask me
Etc... Etc..

Finally, since you know so much about the kind of songs that win Grammys, can you please tell me why any of justin bieber's songs would earn him a Grammy and the worst of it is that it was the "Baby" song that won him one.

shymexx: Shocked smoothcrim and abrantie didn't bless this thread.

But the Ghanaians they surveyed must be of higher primitiveness than Nigerians to think Nigerians are smarter and/or rich. When 80% of the people in a country is piss poor, with dilapidated infrastructures - then that's extreme poverty. Nigeria doesn't even have stable electricity, for crying out loud. And the only city in Nigeria worth talking about is Lagos.

This is just hyperbole and stupidity - you lot need to stop inflating the over inflated egos of Nigerians. undecided undecided

LOL @ 80%....
Culture / Re: 10 Things Ghanaians Know About Nigerians by Godogwu: 12:21am On Jul 19, 2013
The post is just about on point but i really don't think every ghanaian wants to be Nigerian or vice versa. The fact is some people just like to argue and fight the whole GH vs. NG war. The fact will forever remain that both nations are Great in their own way and also have their own downsides. Nigeria, Ghana, SA and a couple others are Africa's prime countries meaning these are the countries that are out to compete with the western countries in a couple of years just like most Asian countries are doing.

My point is some people just want to fight and brag, its obvious...nevertheless i'm proudly Nigerian and i know alot of proud Ghanaians and we are all pretty good friends.

But fencing was a western to-do embarassed

The fence is around the housing community, Lending a sophisticated upper class look (Gated communities)

Individual houses aren't fenced up like Nigerian homes ....l

Well true.... To some extent. I've seen houses with 4ft or 5ft fences, but its mostly wood and you can probably see through them. It also gives a polished look to those homes. In Nigeria the fence and the gate can add to the beauty of the house nonetheless. It just depends on what kinda house it is, houses in GRA, lekki, wuse etc have fences and still look beautiful.
Properties / Re: Why Do Nigerians Fence Their Houses? by Godogwu: 7:34pm On Jul 03, 2013
Frankly i prefer fences around our houses, we must not necessarily emulate everything the westerners do. I've also seen a couple houses in the US with fences around them( not 9ft though) and most times they are bigger, upperclass homes. Finally, i kinda like the privacy it gives.
Politics / Re: Amaechi And Tinubu Celebrating Fashola's Birthday by Godogwu: 2:57pm On Jul 01, 2013
RICHIE BOI:

Nigeria's Leaders' Shallow Mentality: Even at levels as high as the governor's office, they still subscribe to the stupid mentality of supporting foreign institutions blindly to the detriment of their own. Is the Lagos State government a shareholder in the Manchester United football business or what? How come a British football club, 6,500 kilometres away is being given free advert while the Stationery Stores FC of Lagos State is totally crippled and is not on the world's football radar? I just don’t understand the sense behind these ugly cakes.
What purpose do these symbols of cakey "bitter" cakes (with full insignia of Lagos State imposed side by side that of Man U logo) serve the interests of Lagosians except to continually get investments, recognition, etc., out of the state in favour of Manchester, UK which sadly still, did not solicit for the advert in any way? What about the effect this picture will have on unsuspecting, young, impressionable and naive minds in many years to come? I just can't come to terms with this childish idea at Fashola’s 50th birthday. It just steers logic on its head.
I love Fashola but I'm really disappointed at this anomaly at his 50th birthday. Hear this! Governor Fashola, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Governor Rotimi Amaechi, the management of Manchester United does not even know you guys exit, so please stop deluding yourselves and get on with the business of empowering your people and country. These Nigerian dealers (not leaders) must be jesters fit only for the circus. What a shame!

Are you even alright?, like i don't even understand your vex. The guy is human and obviously loves football and Manchester United. He probably was a Man U fan even before he held this political position. Some of you would criticize any and everything... Like! i'm done.

Do u think u are actually accurate with ur comments here? Now u are talking of grammar and phonetics? All these people u have mentioned here... let me exclude (Genevive and Omotola) have one time or the other sojourned abroad. And if Omotola and Genevive were not celebrities, they wouldn't speak such improved English they are speaking cos they still make international travels and appearances. And again,it will be very awkward for them to speak a foreign accent when they represent a Nigerian public office... Even Banky W an entertainer speaks Nigerian accent cos he represnts a Nigerian Brand but back in America he speaks American that's just it.. Now the group of people that obey the rules of phonetics the most in Nigeria are some of the News casters and I appreciate them, they are not adopting accent, they are just applying phonetics, even if they still sound Nigerian, they are not misplacing the stress on each words and that is the most important.

But do u want to tell me that is the way u speak? U speak like a news caster with ur friends and families at home huh? and they wont ask u "wetin dey do am wey dey form? abeg open ur mouth well jare, wetin be baenk instead of bahnk (bank)" So that is actually our problem.. Its not about not being proud of who u are, it's about ppl thinking u are forming and the next thing is to tear u down.

I understand your point perfectly. I always speak pidgin or "less" polished English around my friends regardless of our backgrounds. I can however not speak that way around my parents or their friends Never!, not after all the school fees my parents have paid. For me it basically depends on the crowd your around. I've been studying in the US for about 3 years and I don't just see myself faking an accent. I even detest the way Americans speak... And even when I do presentations and things like that i speak like every learned Nigerian does. People even say i have a sort of British accent but then weren't we colonized by the Brits?. If you watch very old videos dating to like the 50s or 60s and listen to the Nigerian accent then, you'll see great similarities. Nevertheless at this time alot of Nigerians have different accents, like you can't pick it out.
Travel / Re: Nigerians And Fake Accent by Godogwu: 2:58pm On Jun 30, 2013
I don't think you have to change your accent in order to communicate in any English speaking country in the world. As long as you went to school in Nigeria ( which is an English speaking country btw) and you studied Grammar and phonetics, you should have no problem communicating. There are so many examples in our society today; from onyeka owenu to joke silva, omotola, Genevieve nnaji, sanusi lamido, GEJ, Ngozi Okonjo iweala etc. most of these people have spoken on CNN, BBC and other international medias and not once has the interviewer said "pardon?", " could you repeat your statement?" Or anything of a sort because they speak clear and proper English.
I find people who switch their accents back and forth only after a couple of weeks or months abroad very silly and ridden by inferiority complex.

The bible says your body is the temple of the living God. Keep it and give the maker the glory.

He doesn't have to patronize prostitutes to support its legalization. I totally agree with him; its the person's body no?... How is it your buisness if they use their body to make a living. After all strippers are legal in most parts of the world so why is being a prostitute illegal. It really doesn't make sense to me.

The united states is 20 times larger than Nigeria, alaska alone is almost twice as large as this country. If 12996 murders were commited in the usa (assuming you are even right) and 3600 were murdered in naija (of course we both know it is larger than dat, dis is just an estimate) then the united states is still ten times more secure than naija.

I'm not going to say Nigeria is more secure than the US, nahh not atall but in terms of deaths related to gun violence, homicide and all that, the US has recorded way more deaths than Nigeria.
Here's a source http://smartgunlaws.org/gun-deaths-and-injuries-statistics/

The US is just a little over twice the size of Nigeria in population and taking that into consideration 12,000 is still quite a lot.
