Self-Control is Reflected in Speech

James 3:2-4 For in many things we all stumble. If anyone doesn't stumble in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also. Behold, the ships also, though they are so big and are driven by fierce winds, are yet guided by a very small rudder, wherever the pilot desires.

In as much as what one says is an expression of one's heart as Jesus said, "For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks." Mt 12:34b, self-control over one's speech is a reflection of one's self-control over one's desires.

Conversely as what one says reflects one's beliefs, people will be held accountable for what they say:

"I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned." Mt 12:36,37

"If you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." Rom 10:9

Thus one's destiny is partly determined by what one says, and what you say often determines the course of your life.
