Sports / Re: Egbe Wants Better Media Coverage For Nigerian League by kcjazz(m): 11:42pm On Aug 06, 2011
These is a business issue and for an indepth view of the way to solve this problem visit this thread https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-701628.0.html

There is a huge demand for entertainment. What the NFF has to do is to find a way to get paid. TV stations will not scramble for matches if it is not made attractive.
NFF has moved to the use of artificial pitches to save cost of maintaining stadiums, this helps on the aesthetic side of things.

For a start they could start with a very creative weekly TV show that summarises all matches, better than what Super sport is doing, something that tells a story and engages with the audience. In the 90s, EPL had Rothmas of Pall Mall European football show, that was how we all got hooked on the EPL grin

Politics / Re: Simon Kolawole On Proposed Single Term Bill by kcjazz(m): 9:47am On Aug 01, 2011
Nice write-up by Simon

A single term presidency does not save costs, we can do that if INEC keeps records and runs efficiently.

Even if single term were to work, we lack the structures to pull it off. There is an inefficient judiciary to deal with and of course a political space that runs on god father economy. African Presidents are powerful. There is a reason why no African President has ever being impeached.
TV/Movies / Re: Will A Nollywood Movie Sell Without A Popular Face? by kcjazz(m): 1:17am On Jul 31, 2011
Breeze5000:

1. By Smart Marketing, what exactly do you mean? (Cos dude might spend three times the budget of the movie on publicity alone and still that is not a guarantee that people will see the movie. Naija-wise nobody will market the movie, people just don't go for what they don't know it's that simple)

It is untrue that folks don't watch cos they don't know, there is a market for low rated Hollywood or Bollywood in Nigeria, I am very sure Bollywood does not advertise in Nigeria plus Nollywood is popular in Jamaica but we don't advertise there. Plus there is Mount Zion movie strategy, unknown actors and a good platform to distribute even though quality is bad.

That said, he is a new fellow without a brand so what is he gonna do? Easy way out is quality and a good story line plus seeking out opinion leaders in news and social media. Price to market=0 naira.

Breeze5000:

2. Super stories were not released on Cinema, It is first on TV before anything else so it doesn't fall under this discussion. Again it is being powered by "Wale Adenuga" which is already a known brand

Same issue, different medium. The idea is spending less for actors and Superstory pulled it off with its stories plus a huge network which is the NTA.

Per Pixar VS Disney argument, I would like to see your 90% numbers and research, maybe you can present it to Disney so they can change their straegy. Don't just roll out numbers based on nothing cos it is the fans that pay and before Pixar came into the scene there were other competitors to Disney but they never pulled it off. Your preference is a minority at least based on Disney numbers.
TV/Movies / Re: Will A Nollywood Movie Sell Without A Popular Face? by kcjazz(m): 9:06pm On Jul 30, 2011
You do not need a big face to sell, you do need smart marketing to succeed. In fact a popular face is not always a guarantee.

Like someone mentioned, the story line is key, think of old Superstory series, all unknown actors but the stories are interesting.

Not sure of your budget, but if it is on the small side, use social media like fb, twitter and Youtube to engage with online fans. Involve them even in your audition videos, have them to vote on who they will like to see on the movie and then hit the streets. Every week make short videos that touches national consciousness to show you know your stuff and then show your movie release  date

Also just because you are looking for unknown faces, that does not mean your neighbor should be on the video except ofcourse he/she is natural actor. Get good actors with a good diction and do your research.

In all you can succeed with the right efforts, think Walt Disney VS Pixar cartoons, Pixar strategy is to use unknown faces and a good story line eg Ratatoulie movie, and they make money.
Politics / Re: Nigerians In The Diaspora Have No Responsibility To The Development Of Nigeria. by kcjazz(m): 5:08am On Jul 27, 2011
It is not the responsibility of diasporans to develop Nigeria, however as a citizen it is a civic (moral) duty to contribute to building your country whether you are home or abroad. These could be achieved through different avenues but must be based on individual choice.

Even if Nigeria is great tomorrow there will always be travelers, it is life. There are Rwandan's or Somali's that return to their country to help, most times it is not about the money so remittance won't build a country with the current practice,we need new ideas, models and thinking.
@Poster if you want to come back please do, whenever you are prepared but be mindful it is not a vacation but it is rewarding if you have a mission in mind.

and what has everton won since moyes took charge at goodison? nil. as a manager, you have to decide whether you really want to gun for titles or just be contented with staying in the premier league. redknapp chose the former. they were deceived by some idiotic owners that the money was there and all pompey wanted was a trophy. harry went for the jugular - he signed muntari, utaka, kanu, krancjar and milan baros on loan. . . .he simply delivered what the owners wanted at the time. it's not his fault pompey owners couldn't match their talk with money.

Everton has not won anything. But they are still in the league. Pompey won't be for a long time. David Moyes is a miracle worker at Everton, underated and that is why the board can't fire him cos he is overachieving per his resources.

coogar:

fulham and chelsea charge more at the gates than man utd, man city and liverpool. london clubs charge more. the emirates is new(just like the new wembley) and will always charge premium rates so that the owners can break-even.

Per stadium attendance percentages Liverpool, Fulham and Chelsea are no where near Arsenal with a bigger ground. Is that because the beer is better at the Emirates or the buses run quite often? Or the London population is highest near the Emirates?

did he build the new stadium with his own money?

pompey went down because they couldn't match the wages they pay their players with their revenue from the gate-takings. it's a bit rich comparing a team in london to a team in a village in the south coast. it's the equivalent of comparing a club in lagos to another in zamfara.

Oh really and Harry Rednapp couldn't be like David Moyes Everton FC which is a good club but in a small environment and unattractive to investors?
They can't even buy players now and you don't see Moyes looking for Utaka type players for 80k a week.

coogar:

that's the essence of staying in the capital. west ham play poo football and they still fill up their terraces. fans don't go to the emirates because of the football they play. fans go to the emirates to watch football. . . . . .just like the way fans watch qpr/millwall/spurs/charlton/westham. these are london clubs and they will pull fans whether they relegate or not.

So why isn't Chelsea or even Fulham charging premiums even if they have smaller spaces and London fans will surely come. Oh I get it, the owners are philantropists that would prefer to spend money grin grin
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Re: Arsenal Fans Thread (for Arsenal Fans) by kcjazz(m): 2:54pm On Jul 20, 2011
So AW can be called a perv, underachiever, stingy, financial manager but he does not get credit for the stadium/club success? Maybe Amodu Shuaibu could have achieved the same thing but then it wasn't him. Give AW a break.

In an era where Portsmouth FC got relegated because of Harry Rednapps over bloated player value and salary spending. Fact is every coach has ambition and not all fits into a business plan. Think Aston Villa and Martin O'neil? Interesting that Debo said Wenger is responsible for the playing side of things but not turnover. shocked shocked haha that is funny, Arsenal tickets are at a premium, close to 100% on match days and for a club that has not won trophies do you think folks pay for better beer? Or do you think that Arsenal can charge the same amount if they play Sam Alaydyce football?

You can't write the history of the Emirates without AW, hate him or love him. He has done the hard work, which is to work with kids. Give the fella his dues, he didn't build the stadium but he is big part of the picture. ***CLUE**This is why the board can't fire him.

kalokalo:

I see that someone is a disciple of De Soto wink  Have you read the book, the mystery of capital?

Haha, yeah I have read that and yeah I support his ideas. Very applicable to Nigeria, instead of a national ID card scheme lets do land reforms. Plus it was on Late Yar'Aduas 7 point agenda, so they thought of it but I guess things have changed now.

DaLover:

With regards to focusing on Agric first, I seriously fail to undersrtand the point of the persons making this argument,
are they saying that we should all go into subsistence farming, propably like 80% of the population??
are they aware that the most industrialised countried produce the highest amount of food with less than 1% population? when we talk of UK and US government subsidizing agric in their countries it is done as a price control measure, because so much food produced in abundance that prices may crash and force farmers out on business in addition to protecting the farmers from competition of other industrialised countries where the labour cost are lower.

Well, I never mentioned subsistence farming. I mentioned land reforms and the need to use agriculture as a stepping stone to the industriliastion you speak of. This things are not going to happen like turning on a light switch. Agriculture is not planting "agbalumo" and "ewedu" , first off it employs more folks right now as we speak. So all we have to do is to seek out stable foods and cash crops for the next 10/20 years.

With the subsidies, this is business, lets at least feed ourselves and by extension Africa, last year we spent $1.2 TRILLION not Naira, that includes milk, sugar, rice etc. Even the industrial revolution was ushered by the British Agricultural Revolution, so I am not out of order when I think agriculture is a way.

If we had unlimited resources, then lets do steel industrialization but we know we do not so how do we fund it? And saying Government should get off the way is not as easy as you make it, we can see what Shell has become in the Niger Delta when Government is out of the way. And this is why land reforms is a start for us.

In the absence of a breakdown of law and order, people will take the law into their hands. If you have being robbed of your livelihood, your daughter raped, family killed etc by street urchins even in the past. I don't think you will care about Bode George or big politician thieving especially when the Police does nothing. We have had Bakassi, Boko Haram etc its the same thing, where the government has failed and folks take up arm, there won't be justice. I saw a video like this last week for 2 people killed in Uganda, its only in areas where law and order has broken this is what happens.

So with this video, the government can arrest those who participated but I doubt it. The folks acted like it was normal and the thinking is that they deserved to teach someone a lesson. No one could help cos no one wants to lose their live as well. To avoid this in the future, we need the police and the government to step up.
Crime / Re: My God!. . .they Killed Him! (viewers discretion advised) by kcjazz(m): 12:52am On Jul 14, 2011
Sad that we have resorted to this, but thank God for technology more people can see what has become somewhat a norm. It is a cycle of poverty, frustration and insecurity. I blame the thief, he started it.

@Poster you mentioned Bode George and that is the problem, big thief small thief all are thief. This guy stole close to home and so he was attacked. Who knows if the government protected the traders, if this would have happened. There was no police in sight in all these, that makes it sadder. The big picture is terrible if we don't control the total breakdown of law and order in our cities.

What's wrong with nigerias land laws?

Basically, we don't have a way to transfer land assets in order to access capital. Part of solving the problem is to modernise our land registering system so that all this land in my village can be used as a collateral to gain capital. We do not have the legal framework for that YET leading to ambiguities as to who owns what. El Rufai tried it in Abuja and it could be done. This is what we have to borrow from the west before doing industrialisation.

Have you wondered why most conflicts in this country or even Africa are directly or indirectly related to land?

pleep:

ten billion naira? That's 66 million usd. There is no way that's the requirement.

Hence this problem, banks will always ask for high amounts to enter the market to cover their risks. Barriers to entry will always be high. Even PDP presidential forms goes for 10 million naira

Agriculture is not our forte. the United States has the best farmland in the world, its agriculture is mechanized, and it is subsidized by the government. How could Nigeria compete with subsidized food?
plus if we want out agriculture to be efficient we need heavy machinery.

and for machines you need a steel factory. . . grin

If Agriculture is not our forte, then steel manufacturing is?
We lack the innovation, technical expertise and resources to manage the steel industry plus just because we are rolling the raw materials does not guarantee us market.

On the other hand, there is a world food crisis, there is a market for goods for food, technology, medicine etc The developed countries lack enough land for their own food.

My belief is we can't grow the way America did because time has changed and we lack unlimited resources. How do we fund this type industrialisation? On the other hand Agriculture is cheap, employs more people and if we reform our land laws it will lead to great things then we can fund your steel factories.

By development, if we mean wealth that trickles down to more folks, I don't think steel factories will do it, it could build skyscrappers but then more poor unhappy folks.

if u mean textile, agriculture, car manufacturing then we still need this power and steel sector to work at least to 20%

i might be wrong

but i see it as a circle and they all feed each other

ie

if one works, the other too can work etc

Yeah I believe Agriculture is a huge industry for us, it employs more people now in our country. I don't have a problem with industrialization as proposed, I just believe that it MUST go with Agriculture. And if we have to choose one then lets make it Agriculture.

I believe the world has changed, what worked for America and Manchester City might not necessarily give us the same results. Our attempts to go industrial through Ajaokuta ended up in huge waste, and even with that level of mismanagement if we had invested that same amount in Agriculture we would have being better today.

We must do both but if I have to choose one then its agriculture for me.
Business / Re: Nigeria Is Trying To Develop Without Industrializing by kcjazz(m): 1:48am On Jul 09, 2011
@Poster

In as much as I understand your ideas behind this, I would disagree on the need for steel companies and bricks, our country has to focus on our strengths for industrialization. We must not follow a certain pattern we have to adapt according to our resources and comparative/competitive advantage.

With our shady land act, I believe we are neglecting Agriculture, there is a global market for it and we have the resources for it.

Okay, I get square pegs in square holes argument but we do things oppositely in our country. In health and education we have had doctors and professors and some of them have come out with the worst records. Being an Engineer does not translate to good and effective leadership. We need leaders that can work with the NSE, Engineers or not.

Differences based on what?
No two people are the same. The key is your values not lifestyle. If you share the same values, then lifestyle difference does not matter.
Picture this, can the Pope marry a terrorist? They could love soccer, cartoons, rice etc but that holds no water because of their values, one is peaceful, the other is violent.

In matters of values be firm, in matters of lifestyle be flexible.
Business / Re: Rich Nigerians: Why Are You Not Patronizing Tinapa? by kcjazz(m): 10:21pm On Jul 01, 2011
I hope to visit Tinapa sometime this year, it can't be all that bad. I believe no matter what this can be turned around.

My two cents

Transport (as I have mentioned earlier)

Liaise with the Lagos Business School (choice based on my idea that this is the best biz school) and have the students crack this marketing case

Reduce cost: Tinapa should run 3 months in a year, packed with activities. This is a temporary brand building exercise. Why most of our projects fail is we too like big and we don't have the capacity to pull off big. The casino should be made functional.

Sponsor and host every show on TV, MGBN, Idol, mass weddings and even Church crusades.

Tinapa Studios must produce a movies, Nollywood high class. TV does wonders to the human mind

Hand over to private hands

The earlier the better or we might be looking at another Ajaokuta project. Irrespective of the waste, I truly believe in this but a lot of creative and marketing work needs to be done to achieve success
