Politics / Obj'secret Plot:wants El-rufai To Run As Jonathan's Deputy In 2011 by otuism: 2:07pm On Mar 29, 2010 |
Obj’s secret plot: Wants El-Rufai to run as Jonathan’s deputy in 2011 …Ribadu to return as special adviser on anti-graft to Ag. President From NOSIKE OGBUENYI, Abuja Monday, March 29, 2010 Olusegun Obasanjo Photo: Sun News Publishing More Stories on This Section The pendulum at the Aso Rock seat of power has continued to swing with the latest indication that the Acting President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan may after all contest the 2011 presidential election with a former minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai as his running mate. Daily Sun learnt that the Jonathan/El-Rufai ticket is being perfected as the main political option, while the earlier idea of Jonathan contesting the election as the running mate to former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida has been relegated as plan B. By ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo’s latest calculation, this would mean two of his protégés being in power at the same time. El-Rufai was one of the hawks in the eight years of his presidency and a fanatical supporter of his failed third term gambit. Jonathan, on the other hand, was imposed single-handed on the ticket of Yar’Adua who himself was imposed by Obasanjo. Very dependable sources also revealed plans by Jonathan’s power brokers to bring in the former boss of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, as special adviser on anti-corruption to the Acting President, in which case the Farida Waziri-led EFCC would be left as an empty shell, while most of her schedules will be treated in the adviser’s office. The Jonathan/El-Rufai ticket, according to our source, was mooted when it was discovered that some younger political elements were deeply skeptical of a return to the presidency by Babangida 17 years after leaving the ultimate office in a not-too-tidy fashion. Among such younger elements who are not favourably disposed to the former military ruler’s return to Aso Rock are majority of the governors belonging to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a preponderance of their fellow party men and women in the Senate and the House of Representatives. Such politicians had increasingly begun to perceive the IBB option as “ another journey back to Egypt.” El-Rufai as minister of FCT was an influential member of Obasanjo’s kitchen cabinet particularly during the last term of his two-term presidency. He was also a member of the federal government economic team during the period. Now, as Obasanjo plots El-Rufai’s return to power as Vice President under Jonathan presidency, some northern politicians are said to be very angry and are therefore, perfecting their counter plot to ensure that the option does not materialize. This group of northern politicians is insisting on the North producing the presidential candidate of PDP for the 2011 election. Already, several meetings have been held by the northern forces in their bid to checkmate the Acting President and stop him from contesting the next election. Their argument is that under the PDP zoning arrangement, the presidency would remain in northern hands for a total of eight years, 2007 to 2015, to equal the number of years the South, through former president Obasanjo, held the office between 1999 and 2007. The group has also resolved to mobilize and fight against any northerner who accepts the running mate slot under a southern presidential candidate in the PDP. El-Rufai, himself, in several interviews, has been advocating a southern presidency in 2011 without stating that his interest has been factored in the whole game plan. But the argument of those proposing the Jonathan/El-Rufai pairing is that the idea behind the North-South power rotation presupposes a kind of relay race in which a presidential standard bearer runs in one election or possibly two consecutive ones and then hand over the relay baton to another standard bearer from the opposite section of the country. They reason that it was not envisaged that two different standard bearers from one section would hand over the power baton to themselves via election without passing through a candidate from the other section. In other words, the target of the power oscillation between the two regions is via election passing through one person only to the other person from the opposite section of the country. Besides the above game plan which implies that the next presidential candidate of the PDP after President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua should come from the South, those pushing the Jonathan/El-Rufai ticket are counting on the attraction of the pairing. While the Acting President is seemingly docile, the former FCT minister is abrasive and strong-willed. Besides, the latter is seen by some Nigerians as a no-nonsense goal getter who could be used to counter the likely opposition candidate, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari. Buhari with serious-looking Brigadier Tunde Idiagbon ruled Nigeria with iron fist between January 1984 and August 1985. The draconian regime did a lot to instill discipline and moral etiquettes in the psyche of Nigerians. The packagers of Jonathan/El-Rufai formation believe it would be the closest democratic variant of the Buhari/Idiagbon example. The same group strategizing for the Jonathan/El-Rufai ticket is said to be plotting the return of Mallam Nuhu Ribadu as special adviser on anti-corruption to Jonathan. Part of their strategies is to destabilize the EFCC as presently constituted. That will pave way for the return to the EFCC of Ribadu’s loyalists. The Ribadu come-back plan also entails the lobbying of some judges who are expected to be sympathetic to him to give favourable verdicts in the two cases affecting him. His ongoing trial at the Code of Conduct Bureau and his controversial dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force. However, the plot to bring Ribadu back as the EFCC boss is said to have divided the Obasanjo camp with some in favour and others against. While those in support of him see him as the right person to add needed impetus to the EFCC, others express fears that he might be used by politicians to settle scores. How to Get Any Woman You Want. Politics / House Of Reps'northern Caucus Under Fire Over Akunyili by otuism: 1:47pm On Mar 09, 2010 |
House of Reps’ northern caucus under fire over Akunyili | Print | E-mail Written by Kunle Oderemi THE call by the northern caucus in the House of Representatives on the Minister of Information and Communications, Professor Dora Akunyili, to resign has pitched it against some Nigerians from the three geopolitical zones in the southern part of the country. A group, Southern Protectorate Movement (SPM), on Monday, warned the caucus against intimidating the minister for faithfully discharging her duties. It also demanded a public apology from the caucus for asking her to resign because of her comments on issues concerning the ill health of President Umaru Yar’Adua. Instead, the organisation said it was those deceiving the nation over the condition of the president, who had remained incommunicado since he returned to Nigeria after three months in a Saudi Arabian hospital that should vacate office. The group, in a statement signed by Messrs Lekan Adeyemi, Etim Bassey, Felix Idahosa, Ebiweni Ebiokpo and Chukwuma Nwokedi advised acting President Goodluck Jonathan to ignore the call, accusing the caucus of pursuing a selfish agenda. It stated: “We call on the leadership of the House to stop forthwith these divisive meetings of ethnicity bent, which is holding Nigeria’s development hostage. We also demand the unconditional apology from the so-called northern caucus for the show of arrogance. The caucus has forgotten that the resources from the South are sustaining them.” The SPM, which accused such caucus as being responsible for the “continuous exploitation of the south, deceit of the Nigerian state and her people,”said it (the caucus) was not comfortable with the frankness of the minister in performing her functions rather than lying about the prevailing situation in the country. “Is it not a known fact that a cabal has imprisoned our President (Umaru Yar’Adua), making him inaccessible for over a 100 days? Why can’t the caucus address this issue that has been troubling Nigerians instead of chasing shadows?” |

Politics / Truely Speaking I Visited The President by otuism: 11:24am On Mar 05, 2010 |
e-mail: hansonama@yahoo.com, 08034011161, 07025202105 Ever since our president became indisposed, I decided to keep mum about his health and absence until I saw him in person; it happened that I was in Saudi Arabia and there I was at an undisclosed hospital seated beside my president, the shock of little me sitting beside him made my mouth dry until he spoke to me, he told me that contrary to the belief that he was in life support, I could see that he wasn't, only that he needed and still needs enough rest. Then I mustered up courage to ask him pertinent questions, the first being the December 25th 2009 international embarrassment tagged “Abdulmutallab”. He smiled and told me that children of nowadays have decided not to be a thing of glory to parents and that he was thankful that he was away and added “my daughter, I am still embarrassed each time the western media bring up the issue, I know Nigerians aren't as bad to be tagged terrorist, don't worry, we will soon be delisted from that horrible list”. “You see”, he continued, “children are very difficult to manage especially in this 21st century where money is the order of the day, I have 37 of them scattered in all the states of the federation, some have decided to steal my money meant for my grand children to globetrot with their girlfriends while some use the same money to trample on whoever tries to advise them on how to cater for his abandoned children”. I was nonplussed, I tried to decode what he meant but he continued as we shared a drink of Kunu “My child in Lagos is doing well, he is really turning Lagos state to a more habitable state, the BRT system is working and what's more Lagos is very clean unlike the dumpsite it used to be”. It was then that the nickel dropped, it was then I realized that he was talking about the governors, and then I interrupted him reminding him that Governor Fashola he is praising, is under probe, he simply laughed and told me that it is simply the work of his detractors to “PHD”. Knowing that I was more confused, he told me that it means “Pull Him Down”. As for my other children, I have refused to comment much about them until I am fit and well but to say the least, some have embarrassed me to no end, some have turned their once peaceful states to a state of commotion where election rigging, kidnapping, killings of innocent citizen in the name of religion and insecurity has become the order of the day. I let it go as I was happy that among all the so-called envoy or convoy from Nigeria to see the President in Saudi Arabia, it was only yours truly that Turai allowed to see him, am I not fortunate?. I quickly delved into the BBC interview and Signature case; he sounded angry and told me diplomatically “you are a Christian, how come you have not read your Bible to the point where Esaw was mistaken for Jacob”? I didn't want my President to be angry so I quickly told him that I knew that Bible story by heart and he added, “Who caused it”? I replied that it was their mother Rebecca, he donated a cold stare at me as if saying, “Can't you use your brains”? Well, as smart as I think I am, my brains failed me there so I quickly changed the topic. I asked him if he heard the comment his predecessor President Obasanjo made, he gave a loud guffaw, and told me that he knew Obasanjo said that he should have taken the “Path of Honour” when he realized that he may not be back so soon. “My dear” he said after downing a cup of Kunu, “the Path of Honour is an ambiguous statement, (I had completely forgotten that I was dealing with a former lecturer) it may have meant that I would have appeared on a national television to inform my children and grand-children that I will be away on health grounds, that is a path of honour, it may also have meant that I ask my second in command to oversee the affairs if the country till I am back, that is also a path of honour, better still an outright resignation, do you now see why I say it is an ambiguous statement”? “I know that my predecessor couldn't have asked that I resigned because he knows what power is that was why he agitated for third term only to run to me when he knew that he would fail woefully. I trust him he wouldn't have said that I resign”. “Next question please”? I let that glide. “When are you coming back or are you comfortable with the fact that Goodluck Jonathan is Acting President”? “I don't want to be back until I am fit to play squash or have you forgotten that when the issue of if I would be fit came while I was contesting that I challenged everybody to a game of squash”? “As for Goodluck”, he continued “ I know that he is cool headed enough to lead the country but one thing worries me badly, I got a mail that he has always been lucky ever since he was in primary school when he was assistant head boy and the head boy got expelled and he took over, then he became assistant prefect in secondary school and the prefect died, he took over, he later became the Vice Chairman in a local government, the Chairman got enmeshed in a financial scandal and was impeached, he took over, he later became Deputy Governor to Alamiesiegha, we all know what happened”, “and now”, he cried out loud “see me here with Pericadiatis, and Goodluck is Acting President”. He wept and I panicked, how do I console a crying president? I asked myself as I quickly rang the bell for help expecting the nurses to handle the situation, instead, in walked Madam Turai who was visibly angry with me that she only allowed me to see him after turning her back on others with the hope that I would bring consolation but I made him cry, I tried to apologize only to be disgraced and thrown out of the hospital. Angry that there were so many other questions I ought to have asked, I headed for the airport, happy at least, that I will be hailed and honoured as the first Nigerian to be allowed to see the President, after all the suicide bomber, Abdulmutallab's father, was tipped by a serving Senator to be given National Honour, if he deserves the award for raising a suicide bomber how much more me who was privileged to sit near a president? I could visualize the headlines in Nigerian newspapers especially the Sun's bullet headline that would probably read. “Shocker!!!” only when you open the page will you see that the little me met the president. The “scheming” and “scanning” I got at the airport notwithstanding, I was in for being a heroine. I boarded the plane decided to relax when I heard my dog Jimmy barking, I adjusted my ear as I was sure I couldn't have taken jimmy with me to Saudi Arabia, but the barking was unmistakably Jimmy. I woke with a start. And so it was one hell of a devil-kissed-God-forsaken dream…, Oh my God! |
Politics / North Demands True Picture Of Yar'adua's State Of Health by otuism: 10:59am On Mar 05, 2010 |
North demands ‘true picture’ of Yar’Adua’s state of health By Tony Akowe Published Today News Rating: Unrated Yar'Adua The North yesterday demanded what it called the "true picture" of President Umaru Yar’Adua’s health, blaming his doctors for hiding such vital information. It asked the "handlers of the President’s health to put national interest above personal gains and come up with the true picture". But the Senate pleaded with Nigerians to let the issue be. It also canvassed support for Acting President Goodluck Jonathan to deliver the dividends of democracy. "On the issue of the President’s health, I want to use this opportunity to plead with Nigerians to as much as possible let this situation be. Let’s not heighten tension. Let us emphasise on the issue that will enthrone peace and help the Acting President to move the country forward," Senate spokesman, Senator Ayogu Eze, told reporters in Abuja. Rising from a meeting of one of its special committees in Kaduna, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) said doubts over the President’s health would linger except his doctors come forth with the truth. In a communiqué by the Maj.-Gen. Inuwa Wushishi-led committee, Arewa said such information would enable "relevant bodies to perform their constitutional roles in the entire episode in the interest of the nation". While pledging support for Jonathan, the communiqué signed by ACF’s National Publicity Secretary, Anthony Sani, said the acting president could not afford to preside over a divided nation. According to the group, the Acting President should take advantage of his new status and bring Nigerians together to overcome their differences. The communiqué reads: "ACF has considered the unhealthy and avoidable politics of identity which has attended the return of President Umaru Yar’Adua from medical treatment in Saudi Arabia. "The forum has also noted the fissiparous tendencies that now threaten to divide not only the Executive Council of the Federation and the National Assembly, but also the entire nation along ethno-religious and regional cleavages. "As a result, it bears repeating the position of ACF that unless those charged with the authority and responsibility of managing the health of President Yar’Adua are forthcoming with information on the true position of Mr. President’s health status and physical capacity to Nigerians, it would be near-impossible for Nigerians to do away with the current levels of bickering, intrigues and subterfuge that come with mistrust and suspicion. "ACF therefore appeals to the handlers of the President to put the national interest and his health over and above individual ambitions and pecuniary interest, by being more open and transparent on this important matter of President Yar’Adua’s health. "This is about the only way that will enable relevant government organs and agencies take all necessary constitutional actions (in line with Section 144) that will put this saga behind and spur the nation forward for collective good. "ACF pledges once again its support for and cooperation with the Acting President, Goodluck Jonathan. It is noteworthy that the Acting President has been a product of luck, of forces of national unity and of national consensus. Indeed, he is a product of forces beyond his control. As a result, he cannot afford to preside over a divided government or the nation. "The forum also calls on the Acting President to make haste and enact the electoral reforms that will enable the people’s votes count in 2011. The reason is that when people’s votes count, the leadership that emerges will necessarily have abiding faith in the judgment of the people. Such leaders are more likely to exercise power that is humane in its spirit, moral in its purpose and wise in its uses. "Nigerians expect no less from the government under the watch of Acting President Jonathan Ebele Goodluck. One way of achieving this is by improvement in power, energy and security. "Meanwhile, we extend as always our prayers and sympathy to the ailing President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua". Eze pleaded with Nigerians to support the Acting President and help him to strengthen his programmes "so that he can deliver the benefits of governance while he is in that saddle." The Senate spokesman said: "Every department of government has spoken – the governors, the National Assembly, a party that to which all us belong that we are very satisfied with the steps being taken by the Acting President and we are equally satisfied that nobody is coming between him and his job; and we urge him to concentrate and not be distracted and focus on delivering the goods." He went on: "I think that he also started on a good footing by appointing a Presidential Advisory Council. That is a mark of humility, an admission that he doesn’t know it all and he needs to pull in experience so that they can advise on the next trajectory for the progress of the state. And I think that Nigerians should as much as possible let this situation be. Let’s not heighten tension, let us emphasise only the issue that would enthrone peace, sustain peace and help the Acting President to move the country forward. "This issue of looking for somebody who is sick, and then poke nosing or trying to cry about … It is our President all right, but right now there is an Acting President and nobody is having doubt about that. I want to urge us to please allow the Acting President to do his work." On who led the National Assembly leadership to the Villa on Wednesday, he said: "The issue of who led the delegation to the Acting President is neither here nor there. I was not there with them, but I know that the National Assembly has an undisputed chairman. I don’t think that was an issue. Even if you watch an issue in the Villa, the Senate President will always sit next to the Vice-President before other people sit. That is the order." |

Politics / Turai's Father Critically Ill by otuism: 2:34pm On Mar 03, 2010 |
Add To Favorites Print This Article Post Comment Alhaji Abdullahi Maimaje, the biological father of Nigeria's First Lady Hajiya Turai yar'Adua is gravely ill, friends and family sources informed THISDAY exclusively yesterday. It is however not confirmed whether the illness of the 87-year old retired Sharia Court Judge has anything to do with the situation of his son in-law and Nigeria's President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua. When THISDAY visited Maimaje's residence at No 17, Dandume road, New Layout Katsina, the entire place was quite with armed mobile and plain-cloth policemen keeping watch. A aide to Maimaje, who declined to be named, said the old man had been down due to complications arising from old age. "But recently, his condition has worsened. In the last two days, he was unable to come out of his section of the house for the five daily prayers which shows how bad the situation has been. Doctors do visit him here at home, but since we have not seen him in public, we cannot ascertain the gravity, or the type of the sickness," the aide said. Various entreaties made by THISDAY to see the man was rebuffed by the aides. However, one of his grandsons, who identified himself as Abdullahi, said President Umaru Musa's situation has not affected Turai's father in any way. "It is true Alkali (Maimaje) is not feeling too well, but it has nothing to do with the President's condition. He is old as such it is normal for him to be sick sometimes. About two weeks ago, I took him out and drove him round Katsina town. We were chatting and he felt ok. I have not seen him in the last two days, but I believe it is one of those things to expect from a very old man," Abdullahi said. A neighbour of Maimaje named Salihu described Turai's Father as a disciplined man who cares a lot about his neighbours. "Most of us here respect him. We know he is sick, and that the situation has gone worse in the past few days, but we cannot say precisely what is wrong with him. As you can see, the house is well-guarded by armed mobile police men as such we cannot know what is happening inside. But he is a good man no doubt." Asked for how long the security agents have been posted to the house, Salihu said for as long as he can remember. "But their numbers have increased in the last few days. We now have civil defence corps, mobile policemen as well as security men in plain cloths." Further background check on Turai revealed that the First Lady is the fifth child in a family of 16. her mother, who died in 2002, had eight children while Maimaje's two other wives account for the remaining eight. Among Turai's close siblings are Alhaji Zayyanu Abdullahi Maimaje, the chairman of Katsina State Civil Service Commission and Engineer Bashir Maimaje who works at the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company. |
