Governor Charles Soludo warned that an unsustainable wage might lead to job losses and spiral economic challenges in the country.

The former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) warned that not all state governments and the Organised Private Sector can pay the N62,00 being proposed by the Federal Government and the N250,000 demand of the Organised Labour.

Soludo, who was Speaker from 2015 to 2019, made at The Platform Nigeria, a programme by Lagos-based church, Covenant Nation, to mark the 2024 Democracy Day.

He warned that an unsustainable wage might lead to job losses and spiral economic challenges in the country.

You were perceived as a technocrat and made the governor of one of the most vibrants and richest states (in both human and commercial/industrial resources) in Nigeria, but you are giving excuses that you can't pay something less than 70k? When some states like Edo and Borno that are seen as commercially inefficient are proposing more than 70k? shocked shocked

As a former CBN Gov, He knows best and I'm sure PBAT share same ideology too

They wouldnt approve what State Gov would struggle to pay in the long run

If you disagree with this, just remember than you arent smarter than Soludo

Paying such 'huge' amount will reduce their loot. Governors claim to be technocrats but they lack ambition and are not able to imagine big and build a big and functional society.

The minimum wage for FG should be a reference average with +/-15k range, it should not be imposed on organisations that are not under FG.

I'm sure you know better than Soludo

Nigeria's GDP per capita is 2162

2162/12 = 180 output p/m in USD

180/0.5 fact out profits est = 90 avg wage est

90/0.5 optimistic avg wage min wage gap = 45

45* 1.4 =63k min wage est thats before factoring in corruption and other inefficiencies within the system.

The internet is where the uneducated think they know more than the educated.

Those who watched his speech already know his drift based on the grim statistics he presented. Nigeria is not structured in terms of governance to be able to solve it's ever increasing multifarious problems. If you ask me, I'll tell you Soludo does not believe Nigeria has a future.

There are currently job losses, companies shutting down because of Tinubulation. The economic challenges that Soludo is predicting is already happening and it has nothing to do with minimum wage.

Grab it, run with it, emilokan, cho cho cho.

Oya show workings, Tinubu decided to drag Nigeria 40 years backward.

When technocrats speak, I prefer to listen. Wages isn't sentiment.

Because some states pay 70k does not mean all can afford it. When Aregbesola became governor of Osun state, he went on a hiring spree.

When the budget allocation to the state collapsed, he did not pay government salaries for 11months.

Workers salaries aren't based on sentiments. They are made with hard facts.

The least a Nigerian worker should earn is 80k, anywhere in the country. Even a sales girl in a village. I mean at the very lowest but how many in the private sector can afford it? No be say person wicked but that's the painful truth.

Another thing is -how many government workers deserve this pay? The civil service is bloated and service delivery lamentable. Too many workers doing next to nothing. Worse, they are even counterproductive by creating unnecessary red tape and demanding bribes. I am certain if most states slash their payroll by 70%, many can still perform optimally. After slashing the payroll, salaries should be improved.

Salary is recurrent spending.

You want to increase salaries for a bloated civil service? I am sure if some states sacked 70% of their labour force, they can still perform optimally.

How come soludo is not proffering solution to problem that is making labour demand for an increase in wage. He is against government increasing minimum wage to something decent, but he is tongue-tied to suggest policy that won't make labour clamour for a payrise.
