Well first off, the Benin Kingdom has its subtle influence on various groups on Southern Nigeria. But unlike you Yorubas and Igbos, Edo people don't force their culture on others. You stupid goat.

What do you mean subtle influence grin that means attache by force grin it is a definite pointer to the fact that your people were conquered and subjugated in those places you claim they have subtle influence pig.

Let me remind you that the way of the old world was violence and the victor usually takes it all, both language, culture, women and land. So what subtle influence were you yapping about uhn?

There is a recently trending fad all over nairaland now that the ibos use in consoling themselves that Yorubas don't go out of their enclave in the southwest and as such, are less exposed. grin I usually reel out in laughter at their folly. Yorubas dont usually do interstate because we believe our region to be better than any other in Nigeria unlike some people that sees the southwest especially Lagos as their own London.

To give a few instances, there are lot of countries in south America where Yoruba culture and Language are most prominent, heck they even celebrate our festivals and revere our kings like the alaafin of Oyo for instance. What about benin republic, togo, ghana, south africa etc. In Benin republic for instance, you will find large communities of Yoruba speakers both of indegenous origins and those from Nigeria too. Even their president is of Yoruba descent. Even spain, all the way in Europe isn't left out.

http://www.mynewswatchtimesng.com/yoruba-culture-gets-boost-spain/

Don't even let me talk about the UK scenario. Now law enforcement in Uk are trying to employ Yoruba speaking individuals in Uk cos of the sheer magnitude of Yoruba immigrants in the country. We are found everywhere all over the world and we live all over as prominent citizens respective of our hosts and we go about it quietly without chest beating.

This are just few mentions just from my observations and not even a comprehensive analysis.

The edo tribe is the most confused lot in modern history. You don't know whether to claim south south or south west. Whether to claim ancestry from Yoruba or to Join igbo wailers down south. Igbo people disown and detest you while the Yoruba has never for once aknowledge your existence nor penchant for fallacious twisting of history.

You claim Yorubas are your descendant according to your history...hahaha...laughable. How can the most minute tribe in Nigeria claim patrimony to the almighty yoruba.

Till date, the heads of your dead obas are still sent to ile ife as a tribute to the fact that we own you. You are just offsprings of a long lost brother who chose to establish his kingdom at the borders of the Yoruba empire and like most traditions in the world, a dead mans corpse is usually sent back to his indigenous community for proper burial no matter how many years he has lived in foreign lands.

So you see, our ancestors weren't foolish. They knew a day like this would arise hence the symbolic tradition of sending the heads of dead benin obas to ife, their indigenous roots

I laught at your outright display of ignorance on a public forum likely this. If you don't have anything to say just remain quite and learn.

The civil war ended not up to 50yrs ago so the memories are still fresh and the facts can never be twisted by your elders who like twisting history to massage their ego.

General Obasanjo led a handful of Yoruba soldiers to the Ore border, then defeated and chased those biafran flattheads back to the east. That point marked the beginning of the end of the civil war.

You just have to appreciate the rich history of Edo. I was surprised when I visited the Palace of Ewi of Ado-Ekiti whem he categorically told me his grand parents migrated from Benin that he still pay homage to Benin. Like the OP rightly stated, the Benin Kingdom extended up to Dahomey the present day republic of Benin which derived its name from the great Benin Kingdom. No one is talking about tribe supremacy here but the history of the Edo people. You will appreciate the history of the Edo people the more when you travel out of this country.

Look who is talking! the cowards of Nigeria. Upon your acclaimed sophistication even your Awolowo who later committed sucide couldn't move a motion for self governance but Pa Enahoro did. Majority of your so called sophisticated railway workers were massively enslaved by the British but thanks to Pa Michael Imoudu who dared the Colonial Masters and fought for workers welfare. Yorubas are not in any way superior to Edo and they can never be. We are not cowards. And as for the Igbos, I reserve my comments till Buhari finishes with you.

What are your sources if any? You can not put a huge historical proposition or postulation and yet No source. This is a partly distorted Edo History and an abuse of social media privilege. I know that Edo and the Benin people has the richest history in Nigeria. I therefore demand your sources or you authorities otherwise I will take this up with relevant authorities.

Though I am a Yoruba boy all through and through, from my understanding of history and what we were taught in yoruba class, if we still believe that the Yoruba race came from Oduduwa then we are likely to be a descendant of Benin Kingdom.
These are my reasons for saying so:
1. Where did Oduduwa come from
2. Did he meet people at Ile-Ife when he got there?
3. If a town is not related to another, is it possible for the town to go and request for a king from another town? Can Ibadan town go to Ilesha to go and request for a king there..?

Foolish WANNABE Yoruba, what were you taught in Yoruba class? I knew answering your questions won't stop you from asking the same question tomorrow. These are questions that have been answered over and over again here on nairaland. I know you feel inferior by Yoruba but, that won't make me let your lies go unchecked.

This modern day Benin people have nothing to do with the Yoruba, they are more of ibos with the exception of Akoko Edo and a few others like them. The old Bini(Itsekiri and Olukunmi) were the descendants of Yoruba.

People always hold on to part of their history, "Benin has Yoruba language in core areas like during worship of the gods, you can't consult Ifa without using Yoruba. You bear Yoruba names. What more do you need to know that Yoruba was above you and still is?

1.Oduduwa was from one of the hamlets in Ile Ife with origin in the middle east.
2.And yes he met people there, he couldn't have been installed by lizards and mosquitos.
3. Oracles were always consulted before kings are made, and they follow.

You guys are just afraid of being called second class Yoruba, that's all.

INFERIORITY COMPLEX IS INDEED A TERRIBLE THING!

And very rarely will you hear Edo people brag about how powerful or mighty they are all the time.. it's always the insecure weak asss Igbos or the annoying hypocritical Yorubas with their illogical lies. Oh how I wish the British wouldn't have set foot near present day Nigeria.. wouldn't have had to deal with either Igbo or Yoruba.

Now that is over bloated ...but how will edo claim supremacy

Yoruba presented ife civilisation
