EgunMogaji: We have always had them, use them when it's not life threatening, but when bores are out of spec, and top area was rattling before it was parked you just give up on the engine. |

GAZZUZZ: Bore out of spec = +10, 20, 30, 40 thou pistons ?? I did a +80 once on a Mini Cooper. Went from 1275cc to 1380. The failure was later catastrophic 1 Like |

EgunMogaji: During your time, Machinists used to be very precise in their jobs, I once took a 1998 corrola with a 1.2liter engine for a re-bore, when the guy was done, I installed new pistons and connecting rods, bearings seals, the whole package, and I assumed a new lease of life. Engine was brought back in 1 week smoking I took every thing apart and did not find any thing out of place. I decided to work backwards.... I measured the bores top to bottom... the top was within spec, the bores at the lower ends were wider in 2 cylinders I had to buy toks engine to pacify the client. Now imagine if it was weyreypey 2 Likes |

Wow. Depending on the job at hand and the cost involved. For me as a customer, if given the option with detailed information (Something that's rare), about the cost involved Vs the value/end result. The most cost efficient option is the winner. If the right tools and expertise are readily available and accessible locally, I would do a rebuild instead of replacement. I am used to the old engine already and a known devil is better than unknown angel. So at the end of the day, the options made available, the tools, the parts, and the expertise would help greatly in the decision making. The end result (Value derived) is much more important than the cost. Although most of us in Nigeria are extremely cost conscious. 2 Likes |

GAZZUZZ: As end-user (Consumer) I have successfully said decision making depends on the options presented by the solution provider. At least with the enlightenment and information provided here daily by Your Excellency, President Gazzuzz, Her Imperial Majesty, RadAutoWork, His Lordship, AutoElectNG and His Emirates, TheBigkendo of Honda Accord United Emirates Kingdom plus His Royal Highness, Olubadan Egun.Mogaji we are aware that there are options available. From our point of view labor cost is the biggest chunk of Auto repair it is easier and faster to replace with used engine scrap old engine when doing diy, at mechanics shop they buy rebuilt engines so warranty is on labor and rebuilder warranty covers engine. If you use a common model like Corolla engine can be very cheap at junk yard, wall all saw video posted by Egunmogaji of a $20 all you can carry 1 Like |

Re: To Rebuild Or To Replace? by radautoworks: 7:57pm On Aug 11, 2018 |
sultaan: Exactly and labor is so cheap in Nigeria which is why it's hard to justify replacements for us since parts are available. At the end if the day, we offer customer information on both options and let them decide. Even in the USA with the high labor costs, they typically went for rebuilds with both options unless they had a 'hooptie'. 1 Like |

yes I Don show! I dunno y my mentions here were not duly updated. firstly, most of us are speaking from the mechanics view, .... which is very important. but how many mechanics can undertake this task of engine rebuild? less than 20 percent and more than half of the 20 percent are taking this task cos they want to use the engine as a test subject, so before they start.... they give u a caveat emptor (oga e for beta to Change this engine oh). one can only speak for himself(as a mechanic) ... u cannot unanimously speak for others. but to declare publicly that a rebuild is better than a replacement...... is kinda ambiguous before someone somewhere tells his mechanic to rebuild his gearbox. A rebuild, is always better and cost effective when it is done right and all protocols observed! even in the corolla...... but like I keep saying, Nigeria is a peculiar place... what is obtainable overseas is extremely far fetched here.... firstly we lacked expertise, then expertise came, then came the lawyers and the force men, then came the Arabians and Mexicans, then we found a way around all these. common tire patching, the vulcanizer will put 50 in the tire for u and tighten 3 out of 5nuts and still will not lock them because u ain't there to supervise...... talk more of engine rebuild. when it is done right, it is always good for the customer and tedious, time consuming and complex for the mechanic whose time does not adequately translate to money. it's like whether it's better to rebuild a heavily accidented vehicle or to replace it..... when it is done right, it will be almost like a brand new vehicle than buying another used vehicle from the Oyibo man. but the time involved, coupled with the lack of either expertise or responsibility on the part of the mechanic will almost always deter the customer from embarking on that journey. 3 Likes |

Rebuilding option sounds nice but English speaking mechanic will make some of run. Her Royal Majesty quote 9500/hr. In my head I am thinking and pressing calculator how many hours will take to unmount, rebuild, reinstall my small civic engine bearing in mind that the Borale is less than 100k in oyingbo and labour is cheaper to fix the engine there. 2 Likes 1 Share |
Re: To Rebuild Or To Replace? by obekediamondfuto(m): 5:49pm On Aug 12, 2018 |
darmilolah: sample customer assertion 1......... now would u still rebuild if labour and diagnosis is free? the answer will definitely be yes.... what if the parts are to be sourced internationally? the price will also change from oyingbo own oh so hafa |
