New one. Toyota Corolla. Owner ready for engine replacement but really all it needs is crankshaft and oil pump. Owner will have a 6 month warranty parts and labor on the repair.

radautoworks: New crankshaft? If you are gonna go the way of a replacement engine where would you source the engine from. |
Re: To Rebuild Or To Replace? by radautoworks: 12:57am On Aug 25, 2018 |
mayor2013: I thought we went over that. I wouldn't source a replacement engine. |
Re: To Rebuild Or To Replace? by GAZZUZZ(m): 2:42am On Aug 25, 2018 |
radautoworks: from this answer I am certain a used crankshaft is involved. You have avoided answering a lot of questions, but it is understandable. 1 Like |

GAZZUZZ: Did I miss something? No, I didn't avoid answering anything. Those questions were already answered when I said the owner had a 6 month warranty on parts and labor. You asked about parts cost, I gave it to you immediately. Or did you want a breakdown by piece because I don't have that as you know I'm not there. Then major2013 asked about new or used which I just thought was inane given how clear I have been in the past about how we go about things even in this same thread. Then, in an attempt to be saucy, he asked where we would source the motor when I clearly stated we were not replacing the motor? At that price, parts are reman if not we wouldn't offer a warranty at all remember? We don't warranty parts that are not ours and we don't sell used or toks. I thought that was previously established. To cap it all, under normal circumstances I'd have the time and motivation to explain all that again from mayor2013's first attempted dig. Right now however after almost three months, I have more time for Daddy RADU than to go over the same thing I clearly explained before again. I'm sure you've noticed my activity drop significantly on Nairaland ![]() 1 Like |

mayor2013: I'll be clear. Like I said, owner doesn't NEED a replacement engine. We are fixing his old one-the same stance we have taken this entire thread. |

Piyke: Madam said something above that the services she's offering a bare minimum and expected in the USA - something like this. Two issues I see here. 1) Madams clientele are not going to be 100% Nairalanders (mine won't and I knew from banging my head against the wall in the past on here to keep my mouth shut). Her clients will seek her and come in on bent knees after experiencing the Kamorus and Kasalis ![]() 2) No one can be convinced of having to rebuild their engines until they have either experienced it or know of others. It's simply a foreign idea to most in the Camry/Accord ownership because those engines are two for ten kobo at ladipo. When you have say a top flight German car that a used engine cost $8 to $10K nobody will tell you to start looking for someone to rebuild your existing lump. So Madam may be preaching psalm 21 to islamic students. I tried and gave up. Not on the business idea but on convincing non believers. 3 Likes |

radautoworks: This is what I would consider a standard rebuild. Brand new standard crankshaft. (Not a cut to next size) brand new OEM oil pump. brand new bearings. brand new pistons brand new piston rings. there is no way any one will achieve this with 300k without labour charge. Ild rather do the used engine. |
Re: To Rebuild Or To Replace? by radautoworks: 4:54am On Aug 25, 2018 |
GAZZUZZ: It can be achieved with remans clearly. We are doing it. Plus from our earlier discussions it was clear we have a lot more experience doing it ![]() If I'm not mistaken, Pistons were okay. Will have to verify with tech again. Total parts needing replacement with remans as previously stated was 140k. I know this flies against your belief we are expensive but: 1) we know what we're doing 2) no we're not ![]() Don't worry, I'll keep posting more of these for you so you'll see what's possible. This is the fourth "engine replacement" in a little over a week we have avoided. Shoot, didn't even have to tear down one of them as ivoryhouse can attest. I keep telling y'all, WE. ARE. NOT. HERE. Re: To Rebuild Or To Replace? by Nobody: 5:01am On Aug 25, 2018 |
GAZZUZZ: Crankshaft: It is rare to have to change a crankshaft. Very rare. Bearings are design to be disposable, not crankshafts. Also. crankshafts can be reground to the next size. Bearings: These are cheap replacement consumable parts. Piston Rings: Like crankshaft, they may not be needed. Heck I may not even remove the pistons depending on the condition of the cylinder bores. If the engine has good compression across the cylinders, but has knocking sound down in the engine then I may not touch the cylinders. The key is discussing this with the owner. Oil pumps: are cheap replacements, considering their location and the labor of replacement. Oil pump replacement has its own set of troubleshooting. Was the engine damaged due to lack of oil, overrevving, etc We need to figure these things out. 1 Like |

EgunMogaji: its a corrola 2004-6 mileage would be over 200,000. Car has been on a 20w50 diet, look at the tyres? It's most likely our e-hailing brothers. Piston rings are gone for sure. Attacking a problem (crankshaft/rattling) is one way of fixing presented problems. Another way is giving a fresh start. |

Re: To Rebuild Or To Replace? by radautoworks: 5:11am On Aug 25, 2018 |
GAZZUZZ: Okay. 180-200k engine. How much labor and what is warranty with you? Owner was presented both options. |
Re: To Rebuild Or To Replace? by GAZZUZZ(m): 5:14am On Aug 25, 2018 |
This is not new, when clients are on a tight budget, a lot of mechanics do stuff like this. Just turn the engine upside down, throw in a standard crankshaft with oem Bearings and replace oil pump. Engine will run quiet. It's a cheap fix. Does not solve oil burn issues. If you have to teardown this engine and do a proper job from Cylinder head all the way to the bottom you will spend more than 300k. You are yet to answer the question What did you do to the crankshaft. |
