Nairaland / General / How To Stay Longer In The Water When Swimming by raheemat21: 8:54pm On Jan 04, 2014
Want to hold your breath underwater longer? Do this.

If you hyperventilate, you can hold your breath underwater longer. This is because when you hyperventilate, you are getting rid of a lot of the CO2 in your body.
CO2 buildup is one of the causes for you feeling pain when you hold your breath too long. By getting rid of it, you delay the body's need to breathe for longer.

However, this can also be dangerous. Hyperventilation reduces the level of CO2 but does not particularly increase the level of Oxygen in your bloodstream
.
This means that you may run out of oxygen but because you don't have CO2, you won't feel the need to breathe and you may pass out!.
Nairaland / General / Amazing Story Of The World luckiest Man by raheemat21: 7:40pm On Jan 04, 2014
The world’s luckiest man cheated death 7 times and then won the $1 million lottery! This is an amazing story.
Frane Selak, a Croatian music teacher, began his unlucky streak in 1962 on a train going from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik.

The train unexplainably jumped the tracks and fell into an icy river killing 17 passengers.
Selak managed to swim to shore suffering from hypothermia and a broken arm. A year later while on an airplane, it's door flew off and Selak was sucked out of the airplane.
The plane crashed and he woke up in a hospital. He'd been found in a haystack. Then in 1966, Selak was on a bus that went off the road and into a river.

Four people were killed, but he suffered minor injuries. In 1970, his car caught on fire and he stopped it and got out just before the whole car blew up.

In 1973, Selak was driving another car when a faulty fuel line sprayed gas all over the engine and flames blew through his air vents. His only injury was the loss of most of his hair. In '95 he was hit by a bus, but on sustained minor injuries.

Finally in 1996 he was driving on a mountain road when he went around a bend and saw a truck coming right at him.
He ran is car through a guardrail and jumped out to watch his car blow up 300 feet below him. In 2003, Selak bought a lottery ticket for the first time in 40 years at the age of 74. He ended up winning $1 million

Science/Technology / The Inventor Of Vaseline Claimed That He Ate A Spoonful Of It Every Morning by raheemat21: 7:17pm On Jan 04, 2014
Sir Robert Chesebrough, a chemist, was the one who invented Vaseline, also known as petroleum jelly.

The product wasn't accepted until he travelled around New York doing demonstrations on himself.
He would burn his skin with acid or an open flame in front of an audience and then use the Vaseline to soothe the burn.

He passed out free samples to get the product into the public. He believed in his product so much that he claimed to even eat a spoonful every morning.
Family / Freakiest Cases Of Identical Twins by raheemat21: 6:22pm On Jan 04, 2014
This is the freakiest case of twin coincidences you'll ever read.
Ever heard about how identical twin brothers are so alike that at times they can even communicate by reading each other’s minds?
Besides sharing a lot of physical attributes, twins share a lot of particularities. The closer they are, the more they will share.

Turns out these two brothers had such a strong bond that even their death was alike.
Two 70-year-old identical twin brothers died on the same road on the same day. And both were struck by trucks while riding their bicycles in a snowstorm.
The brothers died two hours and a mile and a half apart from one another.
Education / How To Be Successful In The University by raheemat21: 10:23pm On Dec 30, 2013
1. Be prepared for classes.
*.Check out the Academic Schedule of Dates in the online Course Calendar to find out when classes begin
*.Print off your schedule of classes and find your classrooms before the first day
*.Be sure to get the course syllabus (outline) from your professor. This will contain important information about the course, marking scheme, and office hours of your professor
*.Keep your syllabus throughout the term, and be sure to refer to it frequently. It can also act as a study guide during midterms and exams
*.Go to Class! Although most professors do not take attendance, it is important to get the most out of your lectures by attending. There is no substitute for being there!
2. Ask questions!
*.Don't be afraid to ask questions in class or during a tutorial. Outside of class, you can email your professor or teaching assistant, or visit them during their office hours
*.Don't wait until it's too late to ask for help if you are having problems with the course material
*.Talk to a Student Success Advisor if you have any questions about courses, program selection or if you need academic counselling
*.There are lots of supports and services around campus, so use them! If you are in residence, talk to you Resident Assistant (RA), someone in your program, or someone in the office around campus. If they don't know the right answer, they will be able to point you in the right direction
3. Develop good study habits!
*.Use a day planner to keep track of upcoming dates for assignments and tests
*.Develop a routine for organising your workload. Use time between classes to catch up on reading and studying
*.Review your course notes on a regular basis
*.Keep up to date on all your required reading
*.Form a study group to review lecture notes and prepare for your exams. Mixing social interaction with studying will make it more fun
*.Get started with assignments right away. Don't leave things to the last minute
*.Review for tests over a longer period of time. Take breaks while studying and avoid "all nighters." Your memory works best if you recall information frequently over time
*.Seek help if you are having trouble with your courses. There are lots of resources available on campus that can help you if you are feeling overwhelmed with your studies
4. Develop communication skills
Oral and written communication skills will be part of everything you do at university. These are skills you will want to have well developed by the time you graduate.
*.Attend the free Skills for Success Seminars offered by the Student Success Centre
*.Take advantage of peer tutoring. All students receive 5 free hours of tutoring throughout each academic year
*.Visit the Writing Centre (found in the Library Commons). The Writing Centre helps students in planning, writing, and revising academic papers
5. Understand the marking scheme
To be successful, it is important for you to understand what is needed in each of your courses.
*.Read the course syllabus (outline) carefully
*.Review how much each assignment, test, paper, etc. is worth
*.Understand how each of these contributes to your overall mark in the course
*.If you are not sure, talk to your professor and ask questions
*.Keep on top of important deadlines like when to drop courses, special exams, petition deadlines, etc. These dates can be found in the Academic Schedule of Dates in the online Course Calendar
*.Some professors will include "participation" marks; this means attending class and participating in discussions and group sessions. By doing so, you can contribute to increasing your average

Family / Photos : Black Family Undergoes Amazing Transformation To Become A White Family by raheemat21: 4:27pm On Nov 18, 2013
A black family went for an extreme makeover in order to become a white family, and the results are fascinating.
The husband, wife, and the wife’s teenage daughter, were unrecognizable after they had hair and makeup done to look like they were born white. They looked like a typical white family.
This fascinating transformation was done as part of a French television show called “Dans la peau d’un Noir” (In the skin of a Black Person).
As a matter of fact, there was also a white family, who was transformed and lived as a black family for a while, as part of the show. (see photo left)
Both families had a chance to live with their changed skin color for a while, as they were being recorded for the reality television show.
Christine Cauquelin, a director of the documentary, explained that “this is not a movie about racism because France is not racist in the sense of segregation, but rather to address the behaviors that are causing tensions.”
It was done to illustrate that people are treated differently because of the color of their skin.
The photo above shows Romuald Berald, 41, his wife Kitty Sina, 48, and her 19-year-old daughter, Audrey Verges. They are the black family, who was transformed into a white family.
The second photo, shows Stephanie Lawrence, Jonathan Richier and their son Romuald Richier, who were chosen to be transformed into a black family.
Once the families had been chosen, a team spent six months developing pigments and wigs, and ten weeks preparing the materials and to test them.
The families had to be very patient as the team of experts worked on changing their appearance.
It took several hours to apply all layers of white spray paint, and to do their hair and makeup.
At the end of the process, the families, and everyone who saw them, were left in shock with their new looks as they look naturally white and black, and were hard to recognize

Nairaland / General / The Heartbreaking Poem A 14yr Old Girl Wrote Before She Killed Herself by raheemat21: 12:56pm On Nov 02, 2013
Izzy Dix (pictured below), a gifted pupil who had ambitions to go to Oxford University, took her own life after complaining she could no longer cope with being bullied, both at school and online.
‘Izzy would come home and sob in my arms" Her mother Gabbi said "They called her “ugly”, “freak”, “frigid”. If she put her hands up in class, she’d be labelled a “swot” and they’d snigger at her, or make crude comments. They’d exclude her from events, tell her to go home, she wasn’t wanted. They’d turn their backs on her, literally. When she did come home, it didn’t stop, because it doesn’t, these days. They name-called her by text, then online. She’d log onto Facebook and get abuse. Then onto that awful site Ask.fm and be subjected to filth."
14 yr old Izzy committed suicide on September 17th. Her mother explained what happened that night
"When she came home from school that night, she seemed tired and a bit cranky. We had words because I wanted to watch The Great British Bake Off and she didn’t. But there was nothing to suggest she was going to do what she did. I remember she painted her nails - she was so meticulous about how she looked - then went up to her room and did her homework, had a shower, got her bag ready for school, laid out her uniform. I popped in and we had another chat about how the bullying was getting on top of her. It was nothing we hadn’t done 100 times before, and I’d always give her the talk about how she was stronger than the bullies.
‘Then I went downstairs while she got ready for bed. I had a cup of tea and a cigarette — she hates me smoking so I did it outside. I was gone 15 minutes, tops. In that 15 minutes my life was destroyed.’
When she came back inside, Gabbi went back upstairs to see if Izzy was getting into bed, but the bedroom door did not swing back as usual.
‘Something was blocking it, and it was Izzy,’ she says, and breaks down completely.
Her description of the hours that followed is too awful to relate in detail, but she managed to get her daughter’s body down and dial 999, then ran hysterically into the street. Neighbours tried to revive Izzy while she ‘just took off’.
‘It’s all a blur. At one point I ran into a car. A police officer had to restrain me.
‘I remember him saying, “I am so sorry to have to do this” as he got me to the ground.’
Not long before her suicide, Izzy wrote a heartbreaking poem about her ordeal. She called it I Give Up

Celebrities / 33 Year Old Man Did Plastic Surgery To Look Like Just Justin Beiber Be by raheemat21: 6:49am On Oct 22, 2013
A 33-year-old man has spent five years and $100,000 in an effort to look like his hero – teenaged pop idol Justin Bieber. Toby Sheldon is a songwriter from Los Angeles who has used Bieber’s youthful features as the inspiration for numerous surgeries, including face fillers, a chin reduction and eyelid surgery.
He took a picture of Bieber to his plastic surgeon to demonstrate exactly how he wanted his hair to look. ’It took three transplants and a total of $21,000 to accurately lower my hair line, close off my temples and grow back my bangs,’ he says.
Although Sheldon’s similarity to his teen idol isn’t immediately obvious even after spending $100,000 worth of surgical procedures, he says he does get mistaken for Bieber

Celebrities / Actress Dayo Amusa Caught Kissing: Says She Need A Special Man Before Marriage by raheemat21: 6:58am On Oct 21, 2013
What could be responsible for your dating several men yet you're not married?
If I’m in a relationship and it doesn’t work for me, I believe I have the right to opt out because I deserve to be happy. So, if I’m in a relationship and I’m not getting the happiness I desire, I can’t be crucified for walking out of it. After all, I’m not married to such person.
So, why is Dayo Amusa not yet married?
I’ll get married when I meet a man that is bold enough to date a woman like me. Women like us need special men that understand the way we need to be treated for us to settle down.
If that man is not available yet, then I won’t jump into marriage because people feel I should have been married now. Because I am not yet married doesn’t mean I won’t get married. Besides, marriage is not a do-or-die affair.
Although it is honourable and it is a good thing to enjoy, if the right man is not there, I would rather remain single than find myself in a marriage that I will end up regretting

Combing your hair with a large comb/brush will reduce your split ends thereby retaining length.

Health / Boy Who Suffers From A Rare Condition by raheemat21: 3:32pm On Aug 31, 2013
Meet Ali Hussain....He is Only 14yrs Old.
This 14-year-old boy has been left with the body
of a 110-year-old in India because he has a rare
disease which makes him age eight times faster
than normal.
Ali Hussain has seen five of his siblings- two of
his brothers and three of his sisters, die from the
same condition called Progeria which is known to
affect just 80 people worldwide...PLEASE I
ADVISE VIEWING/READING DISCRETION FROM
THIS POINT ON.
Sufferers are not expected to live much beyond
the age of 14.
Life was made unbearable for him and his late
siblings because of their disease, they were
mocked in school and called names like ‘big-eyed
boy’ and ‘Patlu’ meaning skinny.
Eventually they all stopped going to school.
But despite the grim prognosis Ali has refused to
give up hope. Ali says:
‘I very much want to live and I hope there is
medicine for my condition out there. I’m not
scared of death but my parents have suffered a
lot. I’d love to live much longer for them. I don’t
want to burden them with any more pain..
We had each other (his siblings) but that was it.
We had no life. When we did go to school we
were pushed and shoved, called names, kids tried
to harm us. We can’t do much physically either;
our lungs are so small we get breathless easily.
I would love to be a normal person who can
play, go to school, do some sports, take some
risks. Sometimes I get depressed but most of the
time I make the most of the life I have.’
Ali is now the family’s only surviving Progeria
sufferer.
His parents Nabi Hussain Khan, 50, and Razia, 46,
are first cousins and were the product of an
arranged marriage 32 years ago.
