Politics / Governor Fubara Appoints Heads Of Local Government Administration To Lead by WisdomTide: 12:56pm On Jun 18
In a significant administrative shift, Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has mandated that the Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) take charge of the 23 local government areas (LGAs) in the state. This directive comes following the expiration of the three-year terms of the elected chairmen, vice chairmen, and councillors.
Governor Fubara communicated this decision in a statewide broadcast on Tuesday, emphasizing the need for a seamless transition and the continued governance of the local councils. In his address, he stated: “Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) are hereby directed to immediately take charge of the councils with renewed vigor and readiness to serve. They are to await further directives as we navigate towards even greater accomplishments together.”
He further highlighted the importance of upholding constitutional mandates and maintaining law and order: “As we move forward in making sure that the constitution is upheld, and that law and order are maintained as we continue to strive to provide leadership and direction for our people, I hereby direct HLGAs to continue to provide leadership in their respective local government areas.”
This directive follows a series of disruptions in local government operations. On Monday, youths in Degema and Asari-Toru councils took over the secretariats, demanding the departure of the chairmen and other officials whose tenures had ostensibly ended. Reports indicated that the gates to the council secretariats were locked, and police deployed patrol vans to maintain order and prevent any escalation of the situation.
The underlying tension can be traced to a court ruling that recognized a three-man House of Assembly, which nullified a tenure extension previously granted by a 27-member Assembly loyal to former governor Nyesom Wike. Despite the court's decision, the outgoing chairmen had asserted their intention to remain in office for an additional six months.
Governor Fubara was unequivocal in his stance, affirming that the tenure of the chairmen expired on June 17, and any attempt to extend their stay in office was invalid. His swift response to the unrest and legal ambiguities underscores a commitment to constitutional adherence and administrative order.
