otokx: Now that US govt workers are forced to stay at home; will they get paid for those days?

Get paid ke? Who dash you? You no hear say America will run out of cash on Oct 17th?

In fact, they're hitting American with furloughed pay + other austerity measures. According to an email, LOA will be reduced to 5days, no more vacation carry over, and so many other annoying measures.

But what is the big deal about credit checks in situations like these. If someone is going to be hired to dole out financial advice and tell people how to plan for the future and make good investment choices wouldn't it be wise that their credit is checked to make sure that they at least have a clue about money.

It's not a big deal, I was correcting a notion that credit check isn't required for jobs which it is for some jobs. Not everyone involved in banking is credit checked, just specific employees, but in general, banks usually performs credit checks just to make sure you're not a high risk employee.

As far as you don't go hungry after paying all the payables that you'll enjoy then it's ok. Nigerians won't mind paying as long as they have OK jobs and there are basic ameinities(Electricity, water, good roads, medicare etc).

[b]Afam:

I beg to disagree. Nigerians are paying but not getting the services. They pay PHCN for darkness, they pay at toll gates for potholes, they pay tuitions for strikes, they pay N97 or more per liter of fuel for long lines at the pump, they pay water rate for dry taps; they pay MTN for poor services. Hilton hotel rates are cheaper in USA than in Nigeria. Go figure! Rents are paid in months in USA and not in years as obtainable in Nigeria.

They pay sticker duties for emblems on their pick-ups. They pay the legislooters for non-performance. They pay GEJ for mediocrity. Nigerians pay pay pay. Yet no services rendered.

Is that what you call life?

I can understand though. Ignorance is bliss. Most Nigerians usually see suffering as obligation until they venture outside the country...
then their demeanor changes. For the things that are taken for granted in most countries are luxury items in Nigeria.
Common road, electricity, water (and we are close to the ocean) are talked about in Nigeria as if they revolve around rocket science.

Even god damn deodorant is luxury in Nigeria. When some dudes/ladies raise their hands, the stench from the armpit can only make you shout "devil is a liar!"

This is an interesting topic of which I'm happy to buttress a little contribution. Of a truth, much of what is said and enumerated above are true, but some are far from the it. Migrating to anywhere in the world is a matter of clear focus and determination; but sad enough, many seemed to lost it or don't even have it before leaving home. I came to America 9 years back legally with $85 on me, scooting with a family I've never known or met in my life for 5 month, upon realizing their intention of wanting to turn a grown up man into a nanny, I took the bull by the horn, I went to a recruiting station, sat for the military exam and signed up for 6yrs in the U.S Army reserve. Trained as an 88M specialist, the career lunched me as a transportation specialist for a couple of big companies, I was making money, but made education as my first priority which most Nigerians never taught of when they come in. At first it was hard combining many things together, but by the grace of God today, I would be through as an attorney next spring without student loan, no car loan and a house without mortgage. The bottom line of my story is that I learn to cut my coat according to my cloth. These I do with a clear cut focus, determination, and desire to succeed. Lot of Nigerians meddle with drug dealers and credit card scams and a host of shady deals to make it by all cost. Besides, most Nigerians are driven by ego, they live above their means and ensnares themselves with what I called avoidable debts. You'll will see them at every parties, occasions and buying stuff a senior official working in banks cannot afford. Castigating or painting America for a trouble we created ourselves, to me, it's unfair. I've been to every single states in America except for Hawaii, I've met people of different class, but what I've learnt if you must succeed in America and anywhere in the world is that moderation and focus is a key factor in a faraway land, because life is in physics and men are in sizes. Besides, there are ghetto everywhere in the world, but not as bad as you have painted it as compared to what we have back home. What you become or happen to you here in America is solely dependent on you, not the government. The ground is set for everything you ever wanted to become, good or bad, success or failure.

To who it may concern:
Yes, you are an American passport holder;
You are not an immigrant;
You bought a car(cash) at 19;
You scored 600+ on SAT;
You are not fustrated;
You are 21 years;
You have all the facts about America right;
....nice qualities.
Let me add that you are a FOOL..ARROGANT....for lacking virtues like tolerance, love, forgiveness
You virtually insulted everybody that has a different perspective from yours.
I know guys like SIGA encouraging and helping people who wants to come to Canada...based on same reality: Theres better opportunity abroad.
Won't you encourage them to come, even if they don't make million, they acquire a better mentality than the one you described as "poor."

Welcome to America,
The home of the free, and brave. The land of many liberties. The land were the government is allowed to spy on you however they like. The land were ticking "Black/African-American" on a job application might make you "unqualified" for the job. The land were a person with a concussion, is asked to wait 1-2hrs at the hospital because they don't have health insurance. The land were a 19 year old student has at least $30,000 in student loan. The land where a white school gets more funding and supplies than a Black school. The land were a bunch of idiöts in congress shut the government down because they don't want a law that would allow people who do not have health insurance coverage to have the same benefit they have. Meanwhile this fools are getting paid for shutting the government down, while that police officer and that military guy who put his life in the line of fire to protect the American people is not getting paid for the job he did!

America, one of the best country in the world, hope you enjoy your stay. wink

MY brother the issues are just too much. IMAgine a country without Tax Bracket, the LIRS and FIRS workers just look how tall and beautifulyour office building is and "knack you bill". Many offices have no sign post cos of fear of double taxation. And they want me not to "settle" the boys and stay afloat ?

What has the Government done for me SINCE I WAS BORN?

On the debt ceiling debate; The good news so far is that Boehner has declared that he would be in support of raising the debt-ceiling. But it's yet to be seen if the other Congressional Republicans will toe a similar line.

He's gonna support it, true but when the deadline comes, you will see. There is panic everywhere OMB and treasury are seeking ways to avert it. If they are gonna avert it, why are Dept heads including OMB suggesting that they suspend some depts budget till further notice?

Interesting! The same level of discrimination you will get if you go to Yobe State and speak Igbo. Have you even noticed
the level of inter-tribal hatred on NL alone? Nigerians have hateful heart among themselves.

You mentioned earlier that oyibo invest in Nigeria b/c they see the opportunities that we do not see. Big lie!
Oyibo people thrive in Nigeria because you don't treat them like humans; you treat them like gods. An oyibo man with ordinary
certificate would be considered for employment in Nigeria before a Nigerian with a Ph.D in the same field. Woe be tide
the Nigerian applicant if his/her interviewers are from different tribe than him/her.

But like someone said, "money does not buy happiness but he would rather be miserable in his mansion than otherwise"

dasparrow: @Post

OP, God bless you for this thread. You see, America had been my residence for almost 14 years. I remember when I was coming to America in the late 90s, friends in Europe warned me not to go but I stubbornly did not listen because I was carried away by what I saw on MTV and BET. When I arrived in the USA, my eye come clear. America is nothing like what she portrays herself to be. Infact, America brings out the worst in people oftentimes. You see people asking their family relatives to pay rent even though said family relative(s) is/are unemployed. You see some Nigerians calling immigration on their fellow Nigerians who have not yet sorted out their immigration palaver. You see some Nigerians spending the whole paycheck of their fellow family member who had just migrated to America and had just started working.

Most Americans live from paycheck to paycheck. Debt is a huge issue. Most Americans have mortgage loans, car loans, student loans, credit card debts, infact, 'gbese' all the way. Without credit cards, most Americans cannot survive. The American society is largely a debt-driven society. They encourage you to get into debt so that you can have a credit history. Without a credit history, you can't do much in America.

The racism is something else in America as well. You walk into a store and the whites think you want to steal. Sometimes they stalk you. The average american will harass you because of your accent, your African name, and threat you like crap once they find out that you come from a 3rd world country or from Africa. In America, you have nice neighborhoods and then you have the run down, crime-ridden neighborhoods which you find mostly in the inner cities. Many neighborhoods that have mostly black people and Latino residents in them are poverty-stricken but not all of course. Many neighborhoods are racially segregated especially in New York city.

Overall, America is just there. I truly believe that there are other more tolerant advanced societies an African immigrant can live a good life in. One just has to search. However, as for me, USA just ain't it. Yes, you have constant electricity, water, fast internet access, good universities and the likes. But, the average American will always remind you that you are not part of them no matter how long you reside in the USA and that is the gospel truth. I know some Nigerians will come on this thread and start defending America like their roots lie in that country or like that lives depended on it. However, I believe in telling it as it is. Many Nigerians love lying anyway so that they can keep boosting to their relatives in Nigeria and making themselves feel relevant. The truth however must be told so that people who wish to migrate to USA can make an informed decision. Shalom!

I LOVE YOU SO MUCH FOR SAYING THIS, I NEVER KNEW MY FATHER TILL HE CAME TO NIGERIA FROM AMERICA, AND IN ALL MY 25 YEARS, I MET MY FATHER 2YEARS BACK FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE, THE ONLY THING HE ACQUIRED IS THEIR ACCENT COZ HE LIVED CLEAN AND NEVER ENGAGED IN OUTRAGEOUS THINGS TO MAKE MONEY, AND HE TOLD ME EXACTLY ALL THAT U HAVE JUST STATED HERE! NOW I KNOW BETTER THAN TO WANT TO BE IN AMERICA AND BECOME A FIFITH CLASS CITIZEN WHEN I CAN BE IN MY COUNTRY AND BE A QUEEN THAT PEOPLE WILL BOW TO.....

Godson201333: I am living in Europe and i am starting to believe that this racism thingy can be favorable at times.You see that is why Europe is very cleaned and organized than USA.I know there too and when i say very clean i mean very clean but the racism here is higher than USA.

It is just because we black people some of us are violent,dangerous and some do not even have focus.If you see people fighting here they are blacks,If they organize a party they are gonna fight at the end,many of us are just bad..

The rate of blacks going to school here too is very low,we just wanna make quick money.

I think this is the problem with Nigeria. No sense of accountability. And zero maintenance culture. I am pretty sure that we have very good laws but who enforces them? The reality is that most of the problems in Nigeria are there because people really don't want to do what needs to be done for change to happen. Imagine if even half of our laws were enforced. There are many so called first world countries that would not even come close. It is not just government either. THE PEOPLE. We need to do better for Nigeria. I know people that live here and obey all the laws, pay taxes, do fund raisers for their children's schools but just visiting Nigeria for a few months and they give bribe and do all the things they would not dare do in the US. Maybe people should stay in Nigeria and behave the way they would if they lived somewhere else. Things would definitely improve. Nigeria is pretty much a huge ball of frustration to me. As much as I love it I hate it. Seeing the pictures of those hostels today on the frontpage is a classic example of people put in a position of authority not doing what they need to do and also on the other end people just accepting things as they are and not demanding for better. They cannot even be bothered to slap paint on the walls and I swear I saw a picture of a hole in the ground labelled "Toilet". Get the heck outta here
