Emperoh:I agree with ur last statement. I believe they can enforce it cuz we all know money talks in naija however many centers would still be willing to take that risk. |

Nairaland my nairaland. home to all and sundry, the good the bad and the ugly, the smart, the dimwit and nit wit. on the issue of ban on vc by hitv, hmmm i'll just watch as events unfold. 1- i cant blame hitv coz if they feel they would make more money but for these vc's, let them go ahead. 2- dstv had their chance but they wouldnt do enough to protect their teeming subscribers. but really in terms of content , programmes info etc. then i dont see any comparison between hitv and dstv as i feel dstv is lightyears ahead of hitv. also take out EPL and the newly acquired CHAMPIONS LEAGUE AND CARLING CUP right, Then HITV would have no viewership. you'd probably need to take out over 40 channels to reduce dstv to same. I kNOW A THOUSAND AND ONE WAY THAT OPERATORS OF VC CAN EVADE HITV BAN SHOULD THEY EVER ENFORCE IT. Long and short is- HITV SHOULD NOT START WHAT THEY CANT FINISH. |
Re: Hitv Bans Unauthorized Public Viewing Of Premier League & Other Matches. by debest1(m): 4:14pm On Aug 19, 2009 |
i think you'll find that Hitv are trying to maximise their revenue. These so called VC's are currently paying the same rate as domestic customers yet they are raking in money on the back of Hitv, it's only fair that they pay more. Its the same in UK with sky, domestic customers pay about £40/mth while pubs/bars/restaurants pay over £100/mth; they dont seem to mind as they make their money off the punters. |

Dear HITV, you want to charge 20k for viewing centers cos you aint moving units on decoders cos you increased your subscription to an unreasonable 6k per month for just football, cos all the other channels you offer are boring compared to your rivals bouquet, dumb idea, even if you paid a100million euros for the rights, its still a bad approach to alienate your only constituency, i.e your customers!, any company that looses sight of the fact that they cannot exist without CUSTOMERS is lost indeed, Small advice: introduce some incentives like better channels, real time support and activation, gifts and rewards ,instaed of using this seemingly draconian approach, altough you are right to charge a fee for viewing,it should be commiserate with the level and quality of service you are offering . its not what you do its how you do it,do it right while you still have the advantage. |

tayoTFC: I believe someone said something very important debest1: This is a valid point as since they have commercialised the streams, they should pay a commercial license. My only concern is that HiTV should enforce their right the right way or else it would lead to a lot of animosity from the general public. I still believe they are well within their rights to do so! |
Re: Hitv Bans Unauthorized Public Viewing Of Premier League & Other Matches. by tayoTFC(m): 4:25pm On Aug 19, 2009 |
@sology, must of us that subcribe to DSTV then are doing that cos of FOOBALL and nothing more now change to Hitv cos of Football serve its renders if u have Hitv go and pay ur subscribtion if u dont go to VC center afterall is not a crime to have Hitv,,, |
Re: Hitv Bans Unauthorized Public Viewing Of Premier League & Other Matches. by Nobody: 4:28pm On Aug 19, 2009 |
la!: Well said! I did notice recently, that you can pay your subscription online now. . .that I think is a great innovation. tayoTFC: I agree. . .chop knuckle!!! I actually prefer the viewing centres because of the atmosphere. |
Re: Hitv Bans Unauthorized Public Viewing Of Premier League & Other Matches. by soloqy: 4:31pm On Aug 19, 2009 |
@tayotfc, You mean those of you who have always been doing the viewing center business abi? There is a difference here. What about normal, regular viewers? It would shock you that their are households that dont give a rat's ass about hitv nor all its football. As long as they can watch all their latest series and movies and documentaries , hint hint (just so that you wont be so clueless) |
Re: Hitv Bans Unauthorized Public Viewing Of Premier League & Other Matches. by Nobody: 4:43pm On Aug 19, 2009 |
soloqy: You have a valid point there too. . .if you dont care about footie then don't pay the footie rate. Simple! |
Re: Hitv Bans Unauthorized Public Viewing Of Premier League & Other Matches. by tayoTFC(m): 4:53pm On Aug 19, 2009 |
@ TK417 good talk, infact EGEDE 4 U, The point is, if you want total football without the other ingredients DSTV can offer, then go for Hitv if u want any other thing apart from footie, get DSTV. If you want all, get both providers!!! |
Re: Hitv Bans Unauthorized Public Viewing Of Premier League & Other Matches. by Tmoni(m): 5:03pm On Aug 19, 2009 |
i agree with HiTV increasing the subscription costs but not at the astronomical rates, if a viewing centre pays 20k per month, wat will he take home after Fuel, generator maintenance, security etc and increasing the "normal" price from 4k to 6k is a bit too much, 5 k might have been a better rate If "safe" GTBank is on board then they should advise them on this salient points, IMO but i like HiTV sha on sky @tayoTFC, korofo on guard |
Re: Hitv Bans Unauthorized Public Viewing Of Premier League & Other Matches. by GeorgeD1(m): 5:19pm On Aug 19, 2009 |
this is the price hitv has to pay for over bidding and playing too smart. they wanted to win the epl rights at all costs and now they have it but unfortunately no one is ready to pay the unreasonably high subscription fees just to watch football. well, there! it was a gamble and looks like they have lost this one. |

Thier is nothing wrong in the 6k they are charging when they came out, the 4k i guess was just to test the ground and capture the untapped mkts i wonder hw many of u guys had DSTV years back now, theyve made life easier, ure here shouting 6k is too much its ok. 9ja la wa tayotfc and tmoni korofo and egede are words meant for the MEN so easy |

When your income is tied to one thing and that thing is seasonal then you are doomed. HiTV think they arrived so that they can monopolise everything. I just hope they are not a disaster waiting to happen. Hope they don't go the way of Setanta |

HITV should go and sidon on pawto pawto , rubbish. I rather watch my local channel. |
Re: Hitv Bans Unauthorized Public Viewing Of Premier League & Other Matches. by ozenyen(m): 6:35pm On Aug 19, 2009 |
i believe these guys in HITV are not smart enough. how many viewing centre can they police? another way to make money for the Nigerian police. Honestly i dont need the other stations offered by HITV,in there own interest they should categorise it as follows: Football stations only N2500 Non football channels N3500 Both N6000 if not, as far as i am concerned no subscription i will keep patronizing viewing centre. after all the attraction to HITV was because it was cheap |
Re: Hitv Bans Unauthorized Public Viewing Of Premier League & Other Matches. by mystikal(m): 7:02pm On Aug 19, 2009 |
just watch ur football games online. LOL |
Re: Hitv Bans Unauthorized Public Viewing Of Premier League & Other Matches. by mechris: 7:03pm On Aug 19, 2009 |
Hitv is uninteresting without the football channel. This enforcement should be mild other wise they will loose patronage. |
Re: Hitv Bans Unauthorized Public Viewing Of Premier League & Other Matches. by Nobody: 8:04pm On Aug 19, 2009 |
mystikal:Maybe abroad not with Nigerian server, too slow, I tried to watch earlier but scrambled ozenyen: but subscribing is better than going to viewing centres to watch jaree HITV were patronized because of their cheap rates compared to DSTV, that's so true I heard they increased their rates from 4k to 6k, I didn't even bother to subscribe, cos the only interesting channels are NIGEZIE, the Football stations and few others, other channels are wack HITV should try and increase their channels - (INTERESTING ONES e.g. CNN not BBC) Well as for the VC, pay because they didn't get the right to air the matches for free, |
Re: Hitv Bans Unauthorized Public Viewing Of Premier League & Other Matches. by soloqy: 8:08pm On Aug 19, 2009 |
ozenyen: Very good one. Its only football they have and they ought to really categorise it as you stated. The notion that they came out so that Nigerians can afford paytv has been rubbished cause they are not cheap anymore(considering their content). I would have it this way: Football subscription: N2,700 The rest only: N2,300 If you want the full bouquet: N5,000 |

i think they made a mistake on that order, when you are in a competetive market place, you dont make laws that the other competetors would use as opportunity to claim other customers. http://sportsdesks..com |

tkb417: @tkb417, I think you failed to objectively assess and get the point. While you are correct that it is a free world and people have the choice of provider(s) to stick to, I must confess that HiTV has been disappointing in the manner the subscription increase was executed. No meaningful extra to their bouquet content and they hiked 50% over the previous season's offer (i.e. start of their business). For the number of years I had DSTV I never saw such a spike in subscription rates. Yet we called them monopolists and exploiters at the time! At this rate, subscribers should be ready to pay at least 10k in two years time max, if HiTV retains exclusive rights to EPL, La Liga and CL football at that time. One fails to see the rationale of offering 4.5k for 28 stale channels and 6k for (full) 31 channels. Full! only means inclusion of the popular game that Nigerians so love. Good marketing strategy, but horrible when there is no full monopoly, as is now. Because viewers can choose to retain/obtain DSTV, while taking the pain to drift out of their homes if they have to watch star live matches. No need to compare the contents of DSTV and HiTV. Just turn on your HiTV system b/w end May and mid-August, during a weekend you have all the time to relax at home. And see if you won't simply catch malaria just out of boredom. The same cannot be said of DSTV. . . |
