Donzman,
You are just feasting on this thread and you don't want to let go.

The fact is, the history of Nigerian movies is enough to show us how Yoruba actors and actresses have been faring since the days of Wole Soyinka's Kongi's Harvest to date and you are just wasting your quality time in the exhibition of your ignorance.

I posted on the Igbo actors in the Masquerade TV comedy, because you dropped their names without even knwoing that one of them was dead and the others were suffering in Nollywood today, except for Chika Okpala.

You don't know much about Nollywood since you are only fixated on the Igbo actors and actresses alone. And you only know them from what and how you see them in the pirated home videos you watch. And you don't know how they are faring behind the cameras.

I have given more than enough facts from the locations and the present deploarable state of Nollywood English movies. Because, the greediness of the Igbo marketers is destroying Nollywood.

Donzman,
The Yorubas call me Ekun and say that I walk tall like a very proud Igbo. And they are right.

I was a refugee child during the civil war. And I have seen the worst horrors I don't wish even my worst enemy to see. But I have lived with Yorubas and among my best friends are Hausa Muslims.

I can never hate Igbos.
I am very proud Igbo man. But as Bishop Ajayi Crowther said, "Only the best is good enough for us."
So, we should not settle for less.

My Nigerian heroes were Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Mallam Aminu Kano.

I am first and foremost a Nigerian.
From the Igbo tribe in Umuahia, Abia State.

Before Nollywood, where were the Igbo actors and actresses?
The fame and fortune attracted most of them you see parading as actors and actresses today.

You see them collecting fees from different producers for different movies at the same time and will be rushing from one location to another in their desperate bid to keep all the fees.
And they end up acting the same way in all the movies. Because, they did not rehearse very well for the different roles.

A professional actor or actress should be honest enough to say, "Sorry, I am busy now doing a movie and cannot feature in your movie until I have finished the one I am doing right now."

I don't like people without scruples.
These people are destroying Nollywood.

In the good old days, we rehearsed for weeks and even months before shooting.
Ask Lancelot Imasuen how long we spent rehearsing for the Wazobia political movie in Ojuelegba?
Contact him on http://www.lancelotimasuen.com

How can a Nollywood Igbo director shamelessly boast of making 28 movies in 11 months?
You wonder what kind of movies he would have made. And guess what?
He was boasting and insulting Fidelis Duker who is busy doing his best to improve the standards of Nollywood.

Do you know that Shola Shobowale is also a producer?

Omotola is also Yoruba and she plays Igbo roles even better than Igbo actresses.

Only Ngozi Nwosu plays Yoruba roles very well.

A good actress should be able to play any role and adapt convincingly.

Someone insulted that Yoruba actors cannot speak good English?
And one of the veteran Yoruba actors Wole Soyinka is still the only Nigerian writer who has won the Nobel Prize in Literature and Prof. Soyinka also speaks French and went to jail for defending the cause of Biafra.

Only few Igbo actors even speak good English.
Most of them have their fake accents in poor imitation of American and British actors and actresses.
Only few Nollywood actors and actresses had speech training.
Joke Silva, Kate Henshaw, RMD, Olu Jacobs, Pete Edochie, Segun Arinze, and others I cannot name now.

I see Igbo actors insulting Hausas in their fake acting of Hausas.
As if Hausas are not educated in English?
When the BBC says the Hausas even speak better English in their enunciation.

This thread was based on my observation and I said Yoruba Actors and Actresses in Nollywood are better and I did not pitch them against the Igbos. Because, we have Hausa, Isoko, Efik and other tribes in Nollywood.
Ini Edo and Caroline Ekanem are not Igbo.

So, it is not Yorubas versus Igbos.

I realistically, prefer yoruba movie to english speaking ones. Why?, they have stupid production. English movies will have part 2 and wont write it on the back cover. They end the storyline, somewhere really stupid. I am not saying that yoruba films are very good, but they fare better with this act.

@orikinla, i will personally disagree with you that Baba Suwe is better than Usofia. Babasuwe hasnt got a comedy talent, he only forces himself to do it. Have you noticed that he is never part of a script?, He only chips in, which is not too ethical. I think latin is yoruba's king of comedy.

Baba latins way of talking, as well as that of usofia is even funny. The way usofia talks, his english, his face, are all comdey in itsel;f. But i kinda believe that usofia is a born comedian anyway, and he acts naturally,

what do you guys think?

i think am the only one rooting for baba suwe here. one man's meat is another man's poison, they say. i would choose him anytime, anyday over osofia and baba latin. those too have a forced and not a natural comedy to me. infact any film with osofia in particular is a no go area for me as i can still try to tolerate baba latin even thou he is another one i love to avoid!

i am seriously not hating.

IF i dont like someones personality, then i take it as personal opinion, but if someone is not good at something but calls himself king at it, then i think that calls for serious consideration.
Re: Yoruba Actors And Actresses In Nollywood Are Better? by Orikinla(m): 6:26pm On Dec 22, 2006
I love both Osuofia and Baba Sule.
But I prefer Baba Suwe.
Millions of viewers will knowm Osufia from miles. But they won't recognize Baba Suwe once he walks off the set and gets out of character.
Baba Suwe is good.
It depends on how many of his movies you have watched.

I think it's really stupid arguing about whether yoruba films are better than English films (in Nollywood). Your taste differs from mine and vice versa. I know the yorubas always want to "claim" the best and first in everything - that I don't have problems with.

But this argument is going too far. You can never win, no matter the position you take. I know the mainstream yoruba movie in Nollywood as we have it today started off as a "protest" against the perceived "marginalisation" by the Igbo (mostly, or so some thought) producers. Having made their point, they could at least have started making some movies in English so that genuine movie lovers like us, who are not yorubas can at least enjoy their stories. Movies are all about stories, no matter how stupid or non-professional it may seem to you, it's still a story and someone, may just find it interesting. Afterall, hundreds of films are produced in Hollywood, but just a few make it to the headlines. Just watch some tv channels dedicated to films.

So let the Yorubas have their ego massaged, and let the producers give us something to enjoy. By the way, when Tunde Kelani made the file Thunderbolt, it was an instant hit, because so many people could understand the language. If it was made in Yoruba, it wouldn't have recorded such success.

My last word, just a word of advise to Seun, who is the owner (I understand) of Nairaland. I think you should create another alias with which you can use when contributing, instead of being partisan in such topics. It doesn't make sense to discourage people with some of your postings, like some you put up in this thread.

hey slowpoke, how exactly could it be a YORUBA movie if they spoke English? I swear some of you severly lack commonsense. Alot of recent Yoruba movies have subtitles. If you really care to enjoy them, you can.
As for Magun, you speak like that's the ONLY movie made by a Yoruba man that was successful. Owo Bloe, Asewo To Re Mecca, Asiri Nla, Saworede, all successful movies and as mentioned by others, main Frame movies have been shown in International Film Festivals, care to name one Nollywood movie that was shown?

I dont even know what you people are bitching about. There are plenty of Nollywood actresses/actors in Yoruba movies anyway. At least they dont use a Yoruba or a Hausa to protray an Ibo character in Yoruba movies like they do in Nollywood movies. Talk about lack of respect. Either way I believe both Yoruba and Nollywood have GREAT actors. However. Yoruba movies have WAY better plots. I wish they would move away from the same predictable stories in Nollywood because those actors really deserve better.

Chidexy,
Agree.
We are all entitled to our own observations and opinions.

I love the fact that the Yorubas prefer making movies in their mother tongue.
South African natives also make their films promoting their local dialects. And we all enjoy watching them as we also enjoyed Bollywood movies.
How many Indian films are done in English?
Yet Bollywood is famous all over the world.
We Igbos must not let our Igbo language become second language to the English.

How exactly is it lack of repect to use an Igbo actor for a Yoruba character?. . . We know lots of Igbos grew up in Yoruba land anyway and act Yoruba. Look at African China for example, I would have never guessed the guy was Igbo until I saw his name, he acted Yoruba and use Yoruba slangs in almost all of his songs .

When you saw the Jegede character on masquerade did you realize that he wasn't Yoruba?. . . There is no rule that said one should use only Yoruba actors for Yoruba roles. I do not agree that Yoruba movies have better plots, most of the plots are just as cliche as the Nollywood ones.

I just saw this Yoruba movie, there were these gay characters who went to church and gbam, they're suddenly straight. How phony can you get? undecided

@Orikinla

If you can't speak Igbo, blame your parents and not Nollywood.

By the way, you've been spreading a false idea of Nollywood actors. You claimed all they do is act while Yoruba actors are involved in production, script writing and etcetera. Did you know how Nkem Owoh started?. . . Guy was a script writer and up until today, he plays production roles in some of his movies too.

One thing about d yoruba folks is dat they r 2 lousy. It goes a long way even in their movies. Their diction is either raw or oldfasioned. The actresses always prove 2 be beta dan d actors and maybe the actors r simply being lazy. I think they have the longest scenes in d world. There r only a few good ones who wld even be poorly rated when they move ova 2 english.

Donzman,
Even though I read and write in Yoruba, my Igbo is very good.
I have done more for the Igbo language than most Igbos.
My illustrations on traditional farming in Igbo land were exhibited at the World Picture Book fairs and other fairs in Japan for over five months in 1983.
And I singlle handedly sponsored the participation of Nigeria in the exhibitions of Nigerian books and magazines. And I did not make noise about it.
I produced fully illustrated booklets on Family Planning translated into Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba and Pidgin English with the help of Kanayo O. Kanayo and others at the Radio Nigeria and the Johns Hopkins University's Population Communication Services (JHU/PCS) sponsored the publication and distribution of over a million copies nationjwide and I was only 21 years old then.
I was also the first Nigerian artist to mount an installation on Ifa Divination and Ogun at the Friedrich Ebert Foundation of the University of Lagos in 1992.
I was also the one who produced the complete illustrated book on Bayajjida the founder of the Hausa tribes.
I am not a tribalist.
