Re: Igbos come show your proverbs skills by echelon(m): 12:40pm On Apr 24, 2008 |
@Kashif You raised an important point. "Winking" is friendly and should not be translated as "iro anya". Frowning is the closest English word I can think of now for "iro anya" BTW Kedu ihe bu i na mmadu aka agwo? |
Re: Igbos come show your proverbs skills by ifyalways(f): 3:32pm On Apr 24, 2008 |
@kashiff,i still che na "iro anya" should be "blinking" "frowning" might be i gbako ihu.it is connected with "ihu niile" (the face as a whole)while "iro anya" (blinking) starts and ends with the eyes only.echichem sha ![]() @Topic,onye na amaghi mmadu na akpo ya onye a he who does not know someones name/worth calls him this man/fellow |

echelon: I na mmadu aka agwo bu I gwa mmadu ka O mee ihe ora dum ma na-agaghi ekwe omume - asking for the impossible. Anyi ma na agwo enweghi aka abi? Nke ozo di ka ibe ya bu isi mmadu ya nye gi mpi aturu ebe anyi ma na aturu enweghi mpi. Echelon, okwa i na-ata aki m na-eti? Kpomkwem ![]() ifyalways: Ify, nka agadi nwanyi na-abido n'ukwu mgbu. Ya mere, okwu ahu putara na I nojiela ukwu (fatigue). ![]() Winking is friendly as Echelon rightly said and iro anya is malicious. Echeghi m na ha abuo bu otu ihe. Re: Igbos come show your proverbs skills by echelon(m): 5:19pm On Apr 24, 2008 |
ifyalways: Ify you are right when you say that frowning has to do with the whole face but it's as closest to "iro anya" as I can get. Blinking is definitely "itabi anya" Daalu for the explanations Kashif. Another ajuju for you: What is Kashif? Is it your name or an acronym? I have my reasons for asking. |

Umu nna, unu ahula otu ihu agadi siri nyuo mma nko? A man took ill and visited a native doctor for treatment/consultation. After the ritualistic invocation, the native doctor discovered he would not be able to cure the illness so he told the patient that he could only cure his illness on one condition. The condition being that the man should pour enough salt into the ocean to taste! The patient then knew that was an impossible task. When the man was about going, he took a piece of chalk and drew four lines on the ground outside the doctor's door and told the doctor to kindly take care of those marks for him. If it intends raining, the doctor should please take them inside the house so that they are not beaten by the rain. They agreed on a date and the patient left. On the agreed date, the patient got back and the doctor asked him if the ocean has become tasty? In response, the patient asked the native doctor the whereabout of those four marks. The doctor was dumbfounded because he had no answer. When he got himself, he querried the possibility of moving marks on the ground. To this, the patient told the him that if he, the native doctore could not move those marks, how did he think that an ordinary man could pour enough salt into the ocean to make it taste? You see how they cancelled out each other? Iron sharpneth iron! ![]() |
