Udo dili umu Igbo

Ihe ka nte biakpodoro nte n'onu ya --- What is greater than the termite has descended into the termites' hole

Biko, I think it is wrong for nte to be translated as termite, nte from my part of Igbo land is kind of a small bush rat.

Ify, Kashif or mortiple, someone needs to confirm this, bikokwa cool
Re: Igbos come show your proverbs skills by Mortiple(m): 2:56pm On May 14, 2008
@Youngies,
Nte = cricket. Nte na atu onu (makes/lives in a hole). Na mpaghara ala Igbo ufodu ((some parts of Igboland), ana eri nte eri (Nte is eaten).
Termite = mwuru (in my dialect). There is another specie of ant that we call AKIKA (i.e. the one that builds redish anthill)

@Ifyalways,
Idi too much!
Re: Igbos come show your proverbs skills by youngies(m): 3:07pm On May 14, 2008
Above refers.

Now you have got me more confused bro grin

Cricket = Abuzu (in my dialet, it is also eaten)

Termite = Akika (in my dialet, i.e the one that builds redish anthill)

?? = nte (a brownish tiny bush rat that lives in holes)

I need more input please

Re: Igbos come show your proverbs skills by Kashif(m): 3:23pm On May 14, 2008
Nte is a smallish rat-like wild rodent. To clear the confusion, note that termites and crickets do not live in what could possibly qualify as 'onu' in Igbo language. For me, that could be the simplest way to understand that.

Some still call termite mkpu (better still, mkpu ozo).

Cricket = Abuzu  I love this thread!

What is greater than the cricket has descended into the cricket's hole. the termite was a mistake

Nte = Cricket in my dialect. They live in holes and come out in the night to make the night noiseif you know what i mean. Little children hunt them at night; they are edible.

Abuzu = Cricket in some other dialects

Cricket/Abuzu/Nte,

Just confirmed over the phone that Nte and Abuzu are not exactly the same though they are both of the cricket family. Abuzu is bigger in size and more fleshy and is the edible one.
I also learnt that Nte is also the name of a very small rat commonly called oke amusu, the one that eats human flesh if you don't wash your hands after eating that delicious "onughu" soup and "akpu" at night  grin
