Thanks, would have to approach the next hurdle. Trying to find out whether lagos or abuja is the best place for a visa interview. Though I am sure people would say go anywhere but I want to do this thing only once. I have to show i will be coming back since dont have to worry about finances

It looks like I go dey round two in june-august

I just got an offer to do my PhD at Stanford University with a 28,000 dollars stipend, but I am not too happy because admission is the easiest step and visa is the most difficult step sha.

Also I have multiple flags but we go see

Wilfem:

All these american consular are nothing but a bunch of junkies. I re-appeared at the Abuja embassy today with the newly gotten WES evaluated transcripts. Still NO SHOW, as he didn't even look at any of my docs. I don't think any student was granted 'cos I was there for more than 3 hours. Na wa o!

Really they gave no student? why, and what happened at your interview?

UK actually, I have been moving around a bit studies wise. Schooledin a schengen country for my undergraduate, came back to naija, for 4 months, then went to do my masters in the UK. I have gotten a professor to sponsor my PhD for next year in the US.

BUt my UK student visa expires in January 2012, I will finish my studies in August, would plan to go for visa interview in June. Actually would finish exams in May but would have to write a dissertation by August might finish earlier.

Actually I do not want to stay in the US but come back to naija, I don tire for oyibo country and their wahala, but I want to finish my education first

I know no one will have an answer to my question, but let me try sha:

Do you guys think that having a valid student visa in another country will affect my chances for a student visa. I have a student visa to the UK expiring in january 2012 but would be done with my studies by 2011. I dont know if this will be an issue.

I read somewhere about a student from malaysia having a similar problem
Travel / Re: General U.S.A (student) Visa Enquiries by gulag: 2:37am On Dec 11, 2010
I have a similar question to yours- I have noticed they ask people if they have traveled before. Like is previous traveling and coming back a good thing?

Just tell them why you went there. Just dont mention to visit any family they might c a pattern. Maybe vacation or something

It's OK to apply from the UK before the completion of your masters. However, there has to be a natural progression from your previous studies and your proposed study in Canada. May I ask what your proposed course of study is in Canada, and your present study course in the UK? The reason for my questions is that, to be able to prove your bona fide as a genuine student, your proposed course in Canada should be reasonable in light of your previous qualifications, work experience, and financial circumstances. I guess that's why most people get refused based on bona fides, and sufficient ties.

All the best.

I am doing a masters in biochemical engineering but would want to do an MSc in research in chemistry where I can transfer after a year to a PhD in canada. My first degree was in chemistry at an european university. I did biochemical because of more opprotunities in naija, but I think I want to do a PhD for future purposes. Concerning social ties what would be ideal? My father does not have 120,000 pounds and not much land and property. However, I am trying to get a letter affirming that my skills are in short supply in Nigeria but from a former professor. Since, I would ideally need a notarized letter, with logo and everything, I am looking for a current professor to help me out
Travel / Re: Travelling To Canada by gulag: 8:44pm On Nov 04, 2010
Hey tosinho,

I have the same situation. Currently doing my masters. However, I want to apply before I finish my masters. I will be done with my masters hopefully in August. I want to apply in June, so I would have been hear for about 9 months. Have u heard from people who have gone this route? I have tried to talk to people in the UK but no one has info on this. I also called the CHC and they said I can apply but I dont know if that means they would give me full consideration.

Tell me how it goes.

Insularity is destructive.

Suppose your brother gets selected in the lottery, and of course every applicant has an equal chance of this, he probably will NEVER need to APPLY for or RENEW US visas again for the rest of his life.

F1 visa can be denied, same applies to visa renewal, but a selected and processed visa lottery entrant is a US LEGAL PERMANENT RESIDENT. You are free to work, study, live, and travel UNRESTRICTEDLY. You pay US citizen tuition at school, which is far less than what an F1 visa holder pays. You have no fear of running out of status, deportation, and SEVIS fee and Form I-20 are FOREVER inapplicable to you; you are able to secure loans, and more importantly, you NEVER need any US citizen to ENSLAVE you because you want to get your permanent residence. Many countries either allow you visa-free visits or make their visa processes not stressful for you. You also becomes a US citizen in 4-5years if you wish.

Your brother has a chance of getting selected in the lottery and everything falls into place for him. He also has a chance of F1 visa denial, applying for the lottery or not, in which everything falls out of place for him.

@ gulag and others

I hate unnecessary typings or brainless arguments. If you disagree with the above, I will not counterclaim, no matter what you say to me. I have better and more productive things to do with my time. This is my last post on visa lottery versus F1 visa. Goodluck to everyone.

Do you have facebook?

http://www.facebook.com/pages/US-Embassy-Asmara-Eritrea/213168690119

This is run by the US embassy in Eritea. Someone asked them the same question on the lottery and they said exactly the same thing. No need to comment but its good to provide issues for future students. If the consulate can say the same thing can you argue otherwise?

If I had known about this info, I would not have applied, so it is good to let other ppl know about this info so that they can make their choices wisely. Its not widely publicised
Travel / Re: General U.S.A (student) Visa Enquiries by gulag: 8:33pm On Oct 31, 2010
Thanks for the heads up- I informed my younger brother right before he filled the lottery form for his first time not to even think about it. He has to come back home to renew his visa, and I dont want it to be an issue for him.

I will leave my own case to God.

Now, I want to see more examples of visa interviews because they are more enlightening

I think we should leave this matter. Those who want to hear will hear. Someone I know asked the US consulate the same question and they repeated exactly what Naggy said. People have been asked in interviews b4 if they did the lottery. But let us move on and address other issues. What matters is who you meet on that faithful day let truth be told.
Travel / Re: General U.S.A (student) Visa Enquiries by gulag: 12:06am On Oct 30, 2010
my man, makes sense, i did not know they had access to it. Now that I think of it- the same people who run the lottery scheme are the same ppl who handle visas issuance. so they can easily form a database of the applicants. thanks for the heads up, i have done some research and what u said is true. hope other people on the thread listen.

i will warn other unwary victims.

What I heard about spring applicants is that they have it easier than the people during the rush period. Two of my friends went through spring. One was 24 and heading for his first bachelors. He refused to do anything tangible until he gets into America. He got his visa with no worries. The second one was more serious.

I dont understand how they give F-1 visas because I have seen fake students accepted and good students rejected so many times. Maybe they perform some lottery
Travel / Re: General U.S.A (student) Visa Enquiries by gulag: 10:58pm On Oct 29, 2010
Thanks- the problem is that I have already applied multiple times not knowing it has any effect on student visas. So, I was confirming its effect. No shaking life goes on grin
Travel / Re: General U.S.A (student) Visa Enquiries by gulag: 9:51pm On Oct 29, 2010
USA sponsor is = Rejection (90% of the time)

A word is enough for the wise.

Naggy abeg help me confirm about the lottery issue with ur international advisor and his experience with it. These International advisors have more experience than us concerning these issues
Travel / Re: General U.S.A (student) Visa Enquiries by gulag: 1:52am On Oct 29, 2010
you are correct my brother. It seems they have started going very technical.

Abeg cuddlemii should free my guy. He has to apologize for his pidgin because simple etiquette suggests that you should use proper english on NL:

RULES

Please use standard, proper, and clear English at all times when publicly discussing topics on the Nairaland Forum. If you must use other languages, create a special topic for that language in the culture section.

Superbrain- as his username suggests was just being polite. Of course we are all African but that does not mean we should not use our brains

@Gulag, go there and crack silly joke make the guy laugh pursue you. I

grin grin, oyibo people sef dey laugh. I meant, I dont think a monotonous and impersonal interview is usually a good thing. However, I have heard that asking unnecessary questions, volunteering too much information and joking as u said is very detrimental. Its just that when you take a comical perspective on the issue, you will feel more relaxed during the interview. I heard those guys are psychologist and if they see you are tense, they interpret it as desperation.

Its hard to understand sha. Some people tell me not to talk too much during the interview, while other say short answers are not the best.

I just am trying to have a good idea of what I can do to prepare for an interview.
Travel / Re: General U.S.A (student) Visa Enquiries by gulag: 12:32am On Oct 28, 2010
I found this article very interesting pertaining to requirements. It seems they judge F1 students differently from B1 students so I dont need all this ties u guys are talking off since I have been in school all my life.

http://travel.state.gov/visa/laws/telegrams/telegrams_2734.html

Clear enough,

I am still looking for the visa lottery thing. Because I have been playing that visa lottery for like 6 years based on the advise of my mother who said I should keep my options open not even because I want to go to America sha.

Naggy u sure wetin your advisor tell u is word? because i feel it is trickery that they did not let us know about this issue b4 they encourage us everywhere include the embassy website to apply. Everywhere free lottery around. I just finished putting my lottery application when I read your statement and I nearly vex tire.

Also do u think adding humor during the interview could be a terrible thing. I tend to crack jokes ooh during interviews and might be tempted to do it.
Travel / Re: General U.S.A (student) Visa Enquiries by gulag: 4:00am On Oct 27, 2010
abeg no vex grin , though I think my post is explicit enouh. In US visa you must show that you are coming back with ties to your country. For people like me how do I show this?

I was reading all these sites about US visa rejection. So, I am thinking of the F1 visa since it is the most important hurdle to pass for your studies even more difficult than admission. I have not even applied for admission yet. I am just wondering if they take such things into consideration. I want to find out in what ways I can prove I want to come back to Nigeria when I have been in school for a long time abroad. chikena
Travel / Re: General U.S.A (student) Visa Enquiries by gulag: 3:35am On Oct 27, 2010
my guys if you never did your NYSC, how do you show you are going to come back home?

I did my undergraduate in a university in Europe and I am pursuing a masters in the UK. I no get bank account, I have never been to the US. I have worked in Nigeria before but only for a two-month break with a family friend.

Also my younger brother is in the US on F-1. He has been back home on vacations. But will that be a problem.

So guy, whats the verdict- like which visa center and has a higher success rate is better abuja or lagos?
Travel / Re: Travelling To Canada by gulag: 9:48pm On Sep 14, 2010
I have the same question too- I plan to apply for schools in canada, after my masters in the UK. However it seems they only accept people in their masters program so it would be weird applying for an additional masters.

@blazinbeauties

Did you get the research assistant job like after a post study work visa in the UK. Are such research assistant jobs common. Further, how is funding situation for PhD students in the UK, I am doing my masters but it is a taught masters.

Yes, you apply from London. I checked. Are there any agencies in the UK which could help with applications, I am going to check. I know this guy who did a masters at UCL and then went from there to University of western Ontario for his PhD.

Hey guys,

I got my entry clearance and I used a fixed deposit and a letter for my maintenance. Just wanted you guys to know fixed deposit is accepted but you need a letter which includes the term of deposit, the date of the letter, the account number of the fixed deposit, the account associated with teh fixed deposit as well as a statement that the fixed deposit can easily be liquidated to cash, and the funds can be accessed by the student.

i have a quick question for justwise and the others

1) I plan to sit the american GRE in France but I have to apply for a schengen visa, is it possible for me to apply for this visa when i get to the UK. I will only be in france for three day maximum

2) If I get into a school in the US, can I apply for a US student visa in the UK or is it advisable to apply in Nigeria. I dont want to spend money going up and down but I want to do the right thing

Your fixed deposit letter how was it written? I also submitted a fixed deposit certificate and a letter but my letter only wrote the term of deposit and did not include explicitly that the money had been there for so so and so date
