By Ayo Okulaja September 4, 2011 04:11PM Despite the global acclaim for current Lagos state governor for his ongoing overhauling of the city's infrastructure, Nigeria's economic and commercial capital has been ranked as the world's fourth worst city to live in. This was revealed by the annual ‘Liveability Ranking and Overview' for the year 2011. The survey was conducted by the Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU) of the Economist magazine; Lagos retained its fourth position as it was ranked in 2010, after a further depreciation from 2009, when it was the fifth worst city to live in on earth. The ranking is conducted after an assessment of living conditions in 140 cities around the world using 30 indicators cutting across the following broad categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. There are other sub-indicators for each of the categories such as the ‘availability and quality of both private and public health care' coupled with ‘general health indicators' while ‘prevalence of petty/violent crimes with threat of civil unrest/militancy' are evaluated for the stability indicator. The incessant rush-hour traffic congestion on major roads of the metropolis; insufficient low-cost housing, and its attendant impact on the housing needs of the rapidly growing population are glaring examples of the strained infrastructure needs of the city under the infrastructure indicators. . . . . . . . . http://234next.com/csp/cms/sites/Next/Home/5740791-146/again_lagos_is_one_of_worst.csp |

All too common practice in Ethiopia - sign of affection and acceptance. Obj is very cultured, we should know that by now. |
![]() |
OBJ is old school culturally - this' sign of affection for a younger person. Don't rubbish baba for preserving an old african culture. Maybe if we as Nigerians are more cultured we won't be in the predicament we are in today. |

OBJ is the best compared to all the past and present clowns. OBJ had nothing to do with the |

At least the minister of information should protest the Ad - and maybe request an apology and retraction. I just don't believe a major corporation like sony can be this careless. |

babzyshe: Obj is not in power - Yar'Adua is. Tolls are necessary if the revenues generated would be used to maintain the roads - and in fact without tolls the roads can not be maintained periodically. So this' our quandary. |

Stupid thread! This' a sign of affection for a younger person - Synonymous to your mom/dad feeding you – an old African tradition. |

naijaking1:Biafra is the conceptual homeland for the Ibos, just like Isreal was pre 1947, for the Jews. So it is not surprising that they are in all the nooks and crannys, of other states. |

naijaking1: Quick answer - biafra does not exist! It is a concept. |

He's totally clueless - another corrupt official from the northern political elites' club. There's no way Yar'adua will sack the bastard. |

Nigeria is a country with lots of socio-economic problems, but has potential for greatness. The Oligarchy are slowly dying away - new and young progressives will take the helm soon! Case in point, Fashola. |

My vote is for seun for being a Nigerian digital age visionary! But he must also lend about 40% of his capitalistic idealology to socialism for the not so fortunate. |

Greed! It won't work, spend $1500 a month when you can get the same news from other sources for free, including Nairaland ![]() ![]() |

Don’t be fooled, the Northern oligarchy want to destroy Lagos – this’why no effort has been made to decentralize the economic base of the nation. It is a shame that they are bent on destroying what is arguably the most naturally beautiful city in West Africa. I am glad Fashola is doing something about it. |

Unfortunately the haves will be the victims of this heinous crime - A page from Soyinka ideals will be in accord. They need to align with the populace to right that which is wrong about the government and its policies. |

Beware of false prophets… for they are devils in disguise. |

That's the worse that can happen to this country! They've done nothing but wreck the country!! The Country is still trying to dig itself out of the total economic/social distruction brought on by IBB and Abacha, and its taking this long to even get any kind of traction. |

Sign of the times in Nigeria – unfortunately kidnapping is now a profitable business in Nigeria, and quickly replacing 419. Gloomy days ahead for the politicians and elites – they must pressure the government to do more for the have-not. Mexico, Brazil, and other South American countries, have all had the same problem. The only solution would be providing basic sustenance for the poor, and jobs for our young people. |

Fashalo is doing the right thing - he must protect the wellbeing of the people of his state; that's why he was elected. Mayor Bloomberg of New York did the same for out-of-state homeless people. |

babaearly: Before throwing insult try to unserstand my last post - unfortunately, I can't be more explicit to you. I said the SUM of all the companies through unfair leveraging power forms a monopoly in each exclussive business sector. I am not the local champion , you are for throwing insults. |

Ibru company A, B, C, …Z may not exclusively be Monopolies in A, B, C, …Z business sectors. But the Sum of Ibru Company A, B, C, …Z equates to Monopoly in the A, B, C, …Z business sectors, as a result of unmatched leveraging power – hence anti trust laws. Dangota is guilty of the same – I will say Dangote has learned well from the Ibru Group. Microsoft Bill Gates tried the same in the US and UK, and was stopped. |

Jarus: I think supporters and those benefiting from Dangote, Otedola, and Jimoh Ibrahims, would make the same points you are making onbehalf of the Ibrus here. Whether you accept it or not, Oceanic Bank is part of the Ibru conglomerate, and have benefited immensely from the same. When it was all seemingly rosey, there had not been any evidence of the Ibru group disassociating itself from this bank. Now that Oceanic Bank mismanagement and funds misappropriation has come to light - BIG Ibru propanganda machines are out in full force! And you tell me there's no Monopoly? ![]() ![]() ![]() |

adigun101: The Ibru influence is everywhere - the untouchables as it where! No problem with being rich - but blatent anti trust tendencies is subject to investigation And Yes they did steal from Nigeria's coffers - bailout of Oceanic bank by the feds, due to bad loans, to themselves, and close friends. Providing jobs does not devoid them of the rule of law - militants provide jobs for jobless area boys as well. Like I said earlier leave your pants on, my experience tells me this whole saga with Cecilia will die in no time - nothing will happen to your financial gains thru the "untouchables". And I will not comment on this again - my participation here is strictly for meaningful exchange not personal attacks, as your tone seem to suggest. |

SapeleGuy: I couldn’t really say I am well versed in all the businesses listed here – but if there names should suggests their operations, then I would say they dominate the agriculture and fishing industries, in the lower half of the country, at least. And I’d say this constitutes a sector – and monopoly thereof. Monopoly in my limited knowledge also means price guaging/fixing, and this' one way competetion is eliminated. |
![]() |
Separatist proponents – this way those of us who love this country dearly won’t be subjected to vile comments. |
![]() |
SapeleGuy: I don't hate, and I do respect your opinion - but I am looking at the big picture. This is an example of monopoly that has gone wrong! We can not all be born with silver spoon in our mouths - but we do deserve a chance at a good life, this' why there are anti trust laws in democratic societies - and this type of laws further ensures our fundamental rights according to the 1999 constitution. The Corparate Affairs Commission should enforce these laws, but it is too marred with corruption. So my gripe is with the entire unjust system - the system that continued to be fueled, or held up by these elites. How much is enough for one family? How can a small business owner compete with these giants (the likes of Dangote & Ibru) - they own the banks, and friends with the regulator. It is probably accurate that the Ibru patriac started out modestly - but that just doesn't mean that they should crush any competitition using their influence. I am only venting here - not much will come out of these banking saga anyway. So don't worry yourself. We are not in an ideal/perfect democracy - but my hope is that we get there someday. |
