I will appreciate any information on the prices of basic auto service in Nigeria.

Those that know the price of the parts (engine-oil, transmission-oil, filters, spark-plus, etc) can also help.

TIA

My Brothers and Sisters,

Please let me know how much a jar of engine-oil is being sold for in Nigeria. To be sure we are comparing apples to apples, I will appreciate it if you can also specify the make and the actual size (4 or 5 liters).

Same goes for Oil-filter, other auto service parts, and cost of various services that you have performed on your car.

Thanks a lot for your help.

I asked some questions on your earlier thread on the issue, but got no feedback from you.

https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-240606.0.html#msg3552291

Since you have not found the LHD European dashboard, post a picture of the European RHD dashboard, and we can see how different it is from the American version.

The American LHD dashboard is easy to find, you just need to specify what you need.

Boy!!! I meant to say "Evaporator" I must have been having too much fun thinking about my newly found word "Rear Radiator"

Clicker is obviously having issues with the AC System. Since he did not describe the issue, any diagnosis will be "shooting the air". There are more that one valves in the modern AC system (others are actually temperature/pressure sensors that help control the operations, but they look like valves).

The belt is always driving the pulley on the Compressor, but if you can listen closely you may hear the Clutch clicking-in to start the compressor. However if your pressure/Refrigerant is really low, then the compressor won't even come on at all.

If you describe the symptons that you noticed, and the tests that you have performed, we may advice if you really need the Evaporator. (BTW the Condenser is always in front of the Radiator so there is very little chance that you are refering to the Condenser).

Anyway we are here to help you; both with diagnosis and parts supply. The ball is now in your court cheesy grin grin

From the little information that you have provided, I will suggest that you quickly take your car to a competent mechanic.

The first check is to find where all the Fuel is going. Except you are sitting in traffic for hours, or you are "being taken at the pump" there is no reason why a car should be consuming over 1Liter for every 1KM travelled. At a slow speed of 24KM/h you should be covering 1KM in 2.5 minutes. This means that 1Liter moved from your Gas tank into the engine in 2.5minutes. If this happens, the fuel would have been in a liquid state, and I dont see how your engine would be running.

Remember that gasoline is highly flammable!!!

@Touareg V8,

Your car is using more that 1Liter to cover 1KM?? You may be having a fuel-leak, but make sure you change your mechanic. The one you curently have is not helping you at all!!

A used car (Be it Toyota, Nissan or Benz) is only as good as the service it has received in its life-time. Puchasing cars based on low-price and the name of the car maker is realy a waste of money. A car that is due for maintenance is "a car that is waiting to be serviced" no matter the name of the maker.

Your car engine is in such a bad shape that I dont know where to start checking!! Might have been easier if I am standing next to the car cheesy

@muyeknite,
Who is your mechanic and where is s/he located, maybe you can help tonye-t

I guess he is refering to the Heater Core (Rear Radiator indeed, the name must have been formulated by one of those "Mechancs" grin cheesy)

What is the year and trim of your Jeep (I just like all these names; confusing, but fun grin) or if can give me the VIN. I will also appreciate a picture of the part that you want to change so that we can be sure we are talking about the same thing. I am hoping that your Mechanic has enough experience in Heating and AC system and not just telling you to buy parts. Well, I will give you a quote, and if OK, can deliver to your Address in Nigeria.

The Optra sold in North America has a 4 cyllinder 2.0 liter Engine. It has 16 Valves (maybe this is what you were refering to). I have attached a picture so that you can confirm if the engine is same as the one in your car.

I will confirm the price, but shipping may take a while, because a container just left lipsrsealed

Do you need only the engine (block and head) or you also need the intake/exhaust manifolds?

Email me a picture of your engine (if different from the one shown) maybe it is used in another model.

By the way, what happened to the original engine?

Car Talk / Re: I Have A Check Engine Problem 2000 Mazda 626 Es/lx by Kafin(m): 4:39am On Mar 05, 2009
@Kuntash.

All the for wheels cant be having problems, so it is better to test each of them and know what is really wrong.

Un-even rotation o the wheels may also be the cause. Changing the shocks should be followed by an allignment of all the wheels, but I wont even waste my money doing that in Nigeria. You should be fine if you have the same (or at least very similar) type of tyres on all the four wheels and are all properly inflated.

Touareg gave the contact of "a suitably qualified auto mechanic" within the LTV 8 compound, (Kunle Shonaike, his company is called Adesho Automotive). You may need to visit him so that he can identify the actual problem.

Tell him that you are from Nairaland and ask him if he knows the place. smiley cool Let him know that you were selected to come and test his services, and as a mater of fact Jimi Ogunnusi (from the UK) was one of the people that sent you. (I am sure this will get you some discount, and extra quality of service).

Tell him that the problem is with your ABS, and you need him to use his tools to confirm that the signals comming from the speed sensors are proper square waves. and to also trace the signals to confirm that they get to the ABS module.
There is a way to get the ABS code, but I am not sure about the connector that the manual is refering to. sad sad

Confirm his prices and ensure that it is within your budget (I heard that some shops will demand that you deposit N 1Million before they look at you car)

Please let us know how it goes, your opinion of the shop and service rendered. A picture of the shop will also be useful.

Wishing you the best.
Car Talk / Re: I Have A Check Engine Problem 2000 Mazda 626 Es/lx by Kafin(m): 5:54pm On Mar 03, 2009
@Kuntash,
Your mechanic will need to remove the speed sensor wires before he/she can work on the shocks. Confirm that they were all reconnected. If the wires were not removed, they are very fragile and would have been damaged. Also depending on how much "Hammer Blows" were delevered to the assembly in an attempt to loosen the bolts and where they landed, the "speed sensor" might have been affected. (It is also on the axle hub, next to the rotor)

Testing will involve connecting a scope to the speed sensor and spinning the wheel. Then make sure that the correct signal waveform is comming out and travelling through the wires to the ABS module.

Car Talk / Re: Help, What Are The Dangers Of Using Cars Coverted From Right To Left Hand Drive by Kafin(m): 2:15am On Mar 03, 2009
Getting all cars assembled in Japan to start life as RHD will be contrary to the principles of "assembly line". In my understanding, if they plan to assemble LHD vehicles in Japan, they would have accommodated the necessary modifications to the assembly line so that when it is time to make LHD cars, they simply bring out the appropriate parts and put them together. Same applies to making cars with different trims.

Imagine the cost of taking out the parts (dashboard, steering column, pedals, wirings, etc), modifying the firewall, and cost of labour; only to put in the LHD components. Moreover those removed components cannot be reused or sold as new.

@OP,
You obviously wont feel comfortable with your car anymore, so the best option is to return it if you can. If not, check the cost of re-doing the conversion. Nothing beats a car that is properly maintained/serviced. When a car is cheap, you are most likely overlooking some details.
Car Talk / Re: I Have A Check Engine Problem 2000 Mazda 626 Es/lx by Kafin(m): 1:30am On Mar 03, 2009
I used to advise that car owners dont need to buy OBD II code readers because in my experience, a mechanic will read the codes and discuss them with the car owner as part of diagnosis. But having realized that it costs N15,000 to read codes in Nigeria, I fully agree that it makes good sense for car owners to buy portable OBD II readers. By the time you use it three times, you have covered the price you would have paid to get someone check the codes for you. cool cool cheesy

If the check-engine-light is ON, by all means check which codes were stored in the computer's memory. It will help you know what is going on with your vehicle.

A lot is things can cause the check-engine-light to come ON, and the list of codes are constantly increasing that it does not make sense to generalize the warning. Read the codes and address the reason why your particular car is illuminating the check-engine-light.

For Seyewest, you cannot have Mazda 626 LX/ES, you have to pick one (you wan go mecca to become an Alhaji and Alhaja on the same trip? Nba, you have to choose one grin). The parts used in the two trims are sufficiently different, especially the engine controls. If nothing is really wrong with  your car (an historical error illuminated the MIL) keep driving it, after a while the light will go OFF, but if you still have it ON after about a month, read the codes and get your car serviced.

One important fact is that when that light is ON, your car is running with some default values -the feedback link through which the Engine control module checks the state/readings on the sensors and makes the necessary adjustments is being ignored. So the injectors are just dumping x-amount of gasoline into the cylinders and firing the plugs without considering a number of factors that could have made the car run with a much lower amount of gasoline. This could be as much as one and a half (150%) gasoline consumption, compared with a normal car that consumes 100% (pardon the statistics).

Gasoline with low Octane level will definitely cause pre-combustion (which will be manifested as pings from the engine) and depending on the car -if it can compensate for the pre-combustion or not, and its post-combustion emission control system, may end up illuminating the MIL. Pre-combustion will eventually cause engine damage because it is essentially trying to force the crankshaft to rotate in an opposite direction than would have been if the combustion happens at the right time.

For symbianDON, you are lucky to have a friend's car that you can compare with. The trouble could be coming from a lot of places, you/(or your mechanic) will need to check your particular code(s) and follow the necessary steps to repair the fault(s).

KA24DETT is correct in the sense that gasoline with a lower octane level than recommended will combust a bit sooner than necessary (detonation), and the Engine control module will attempt to retard the ignition timing to compensate, but this can only go to some extent as it wasnt the spark that was detonating the air-fuel mixture in the first place. That is why the car manufacturers specify the octane level that should be used in their cars. However as demanded by Touareg and mentioned by Siena, you need to retract your out-of-place comments.

My friend Ericok, we all know "mr rewire", and I believe that if you ever meet someone that can truly fix an OBD II problem, you will not call him/her “a rewire”!! Please as you are turning on your ignition, (starting your car) check your dashboard. If the Check-engine-light  does not come on, all that your mechanic did was to simply disconnect the wires that powers the "Check-engine-light" bulb. If it does come on, then things are OK, but from his/her appearance and the tools that would have been used, you should have known that he/she is different from “a rewire”. (A bill of N1,500 when mechanic-wana-beess charge N15,000 just to read the codes) lipsrsealed lipsrsealed undecided undecided

I could not recommend that anyone takes their car to "good mechanic", because no one has mentioned knowing one cry cry. Please if you do know a "good mechanic", (if not to help fellow Nairalanders) help promote the business of the "good mechanic" by sharing his/her information. You may even become a middle-man grin cheesy

Very good idea, please sign me on. Made a similar post at  https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=228489.msg3436877#msg3436877

@Xavier,
Your observations are correct, but DEMOCRACY is not supposed to be running along those lines. We have three options:
1) Peacefully enlighten our fellow Nigerians to practise Democracy the way it is meant to be practised. (I have just signed on for this, Xavier we need you on board)
2) Forcefully fight the currupt leaders. This will be bloddy, and looking back at history, I do believe that it will not sail through
3) Do nothing, and keep complaining. (Please do not take this option)

If people are enlighten and vote-in a house of Representative and Senate that is TRULLY fighting for the interest of the nation, (as is supposed to be in a Democratic government) there will be big changes within a very short time.

Imagine a Senate which is comprised of intelligent people that really wants to develop the nation, (by the way, the Senate can Democratically and peacefully question any of the leaders -including the president); do you think they will sit-back and watch all the stupid things that our leaders are doing?

I also want to assure you that Nigerians (both Big-Man, and Small-Man) will not do evil if they know that they will be held accountable. So all that we really need to do is try our possible best to ensure that no "My Surname is", "I have never done anything for the people in my lifetime, but trust me" politicians are elected into the House of Reps and the Senate. And the good thing is that election is sufficienly difficult to rig at this level, because we all know each other!!!

So get involved in Politics; if you cannot contest, ensure that the person that represent your constituency has brains in his/her skull and is interested in improving the nation.

Politics / Re: What Will You Say Is Nigeria's Problem by Kafin(m): 1:52am On Feb 07, 2009
Boy O Boy, So many opinions on what is the problem with our great country!! I will add mine as well!!!

The problem is mostly that nobody can be held accountable for anything. This has given a "K-Leg" to everything that we do as a nation.

Some people talk about corrupt leaders. I will say that they became corrupt because there is nobody to hold them accountable for the position that they were occupying and their actions. Imagine how governors/ministers or even the president will behave if they know that the House of Reps/Senate will question their actions??

So why is the house of Reps and the Senate not doing their work?? In my opinion, it is because "you and I" are not holding them accountable. Up till last election (and the comming ones, if you and I continue to acti the way we have been acting), most of the Reps and Senators we have, got elected either because of their Surname, because they bought the votes of their community or because they successfully intimidated their community. The intelligent ones who could have helped our nation all ran away from politics leaving the toughs and never-do-wells to play the game (remember the saying that politics is a dirty game?).  Tell me what type of results do you expect from these set of people?? I have heard of members of Reps that were almost-always absent from seatings and some that have NOT said anything in the house since they started their term (I wonder who such people are representing).

When we have a House of Reps and Senate that are occupied by people who truly have the interest of the nation at heart, I tell you that we will start noticing great changes in less than five years. This is because they are the only ones that can democratically and peacefully question the leaders and hold them accountable. Until then we will continue to have a nation whose future is worse that its past.

The solution for this is VERY SIMPLE, though will take some time/pains (nothing good comes easy). You and I should be more active in politics. If you are not interested in contesting, at least make sure that the person that represent your constituency is someone that will represent your interest; Mr.(or Ms.) Big-Money/Big-Surname/Wicked-Tough who has never lived in your community nor done anything in the interest of the people all his/her lifetime has no place in representing your community!!

After selecting your Representative (both in the House and at the Senate) keep close watch on their actions, and let them know your collective(democratic) wishes. Information on how well they represent you should be shared throughout the community, so that everybody knows how their Reps are performing. I am yet to see/meet someone who will know the consequences of doing something wrong, and will still go ahead and act wrongly. (Except when the potential gains outweigh the consequences. This of-course is a special case).

@Eziachi, I noticed your passion for the nation to be divided. Since I dont support dividing the nation, I will give you the liberty of imagining that the whole nation is Igbo, with all the males being more Nna that Nnamdi, and the females being more Nne than Nneka. If we still lack accountability guess what will happen; it will be my clan (who happens to be in power) against yours (who is watching all the stupid things that my clan is doing, and not being accountable for our actions). Then will you quickly call for another division?? Definitely not the way to go.

For those that wants violent protests/revolution, so many have come and gone. We all know what will happen. By the way most of those protests we watch on the TV were sponsored. Their goal is to get enough cloud/noise to push some Bills through the House of Reps and the Senate. Even if the leaders that were committing the action that is being protested were there to meet protesters, guess what will happen when the protesters finally depart for their homes?? So we just have to get our Reps. to really represent us, and do a proper Democracy.

For those that think the problem is "the people". This cannot be true because we have many Nigerians excelling in various parts of the world -except in Nigeria.

Our system (bribes, retrogressive and backward culture, misuse of office/power etc) may carry some blame, in the sense that they can make a potentially-good person to act badly.  But imagine how people will quickly sit-up when they know that they will be held accountable. Even family members will stop making unpatriotic request. Check this; what do you think the head of Central Bank, PHCN, and other parastatals will do if they know that they will be called to come and explain why things are going wrong?? I read about NLC asking for the removal of some leaders, then what? They will simply commit all their atrocities and get fired, and the next person does the same thing. So we as a nation will keep going round in circles. Simply call them to come and explain why things are going wrong. This will deter both the current and future leader from acting wrongly!

Please those that knows the lyrics of Fela's song "Democracy" (or Teacher, no teach me nonsense -I think they are the same) should share it. I want to ask my Rep to sponsor a Bill to incorporate some important parts of the song into the National Anthem.

As soon as we have a House of Reps and Senate that represent us, then we can request for a law that will remove all IMMUNITY from ALL elected officers. An elected officer that have the interest of the nation at heart does not need any immunity. It is true that other nations give their president immunity, but I believe that Nigeria is a special-case.

As the nation prepares for the next election, please get involved!! Make sure that the people in the House of Reps and the Senate are there to truly represent our interest. Dont follow anyone/party simply because some Big-Man is speaking for them. Dont vote for anybody that has never acted in the interest of the people in their lifetime (and we all know them). If you are not able to contest, please support those that will represent the interest of the nation, and openly oppose those that were contesting simply because they have noting better to do.

A good House of Reps and Senate will help us ensure that things are done properly at the State and Federal level. Then Nigeria will be a great Nation.

In my opinion, the President can come any part of the country! With strong demand for accountability, we will all be fine.

I should have opened a new thread with a wonderful title to share my experience with Aloy.Emeka, but since Emeka is more interested in a "silently doing a good job" approach, and has an idea of "those that buy from me will know", I will just add my comments to this existing thread.

A lot has happened since I took possession of the Boeing 787 airplane, and Emeka has always been available to help. His services did not stop with the sales, but he continued to amaze me with more and more.

First, after Baba-Yekini inspected the air plane and noted that the Black Box was missing, I called Emeka and from our discussions, I was sure he knew nothing about the disappearance of the Black Box. Emeka informed me that he personally checked every component on the airplane before she (yes my airplane is feminine, her name na AMAKA, and I hope say she go born plenty pikin.) left obodo-oyinbo. The airplane was first taken to TinCan for customs and clearing, but after reading my message Emeka moved the airplane to the airport as I requested. Total time spent at TinCan was less than 5 minutes.

Baba-Yekini was talking to his suppliers at Ladipo to get a replacement which Emeka offered to pay for (according to his words, "I will never sell anything that is not complete to my customers"wink, when we read the posting from Mr WHARF-RAT (AKA hbrednic). Emeka has been negotiating with the wharf-Rat, and I should be having my Black Box back on the plane very soon. I still cant imagine how Mr Wharf-Rat could have done so much within the five minutes that AMAKA spent at TinCan.

I will be suing hbrednic to court for Armed Robery. One on the cameras on the airplane had his picture as he gained entry into the airplane, ran-searched every where, and removed the Black Box, he was armed with several tools.

I will also let you know that Emeka paid for my Pilot License, and has promised to work with smol of FASC to ensure that I can fly anywhere I want without any disturbance. I dont know the details but I just got a call from oblo that he (oblo) won a contract to be supplying me original Jet A1 fuel for one year. I dont know where oblo is getting the Jet A1 fuel, but I go collect am.

Car Talk / Re: What Do You Know About Cherry Motor? by Kafin(m): 8:59pm On Jan 23, 2009
Cherry Motors!!!
They are obviously first generation, and will need lots of improvements. Sudden stops while in motion and repeated faults are SAD and can be DANGEROUS. If the representatives of the motor company cant fix the problems, then there is no point buying the cars. I will expect more for a price of =N=3.3Million.

Going by the informations provided on this thread, (I have no knowledge of the specifications and ability of these cars), I suspect one of those "I heard. . . stories". I have not seen the doors on any vehicle being 100% electrically controlled. The Electrical controls always operate the basic mechanical levers to open the doors. Even in a complete failure of the controls, the occupants will be able to pull the mechanical handles to open the door. (Please forgive me if Cherry motors really made a car that has no mechanical levers for opening the doors).

Car Talk / Re: South Africa To Acquire Rights To Produce Nigerian Cars. by Kafin(m): 7:10pm On Jan 20, 2009
This is a really old thread.
I am hearing the story for the very first time so pardon me if I missed somethings grin

Read throught the thread and some section, where the producer was qouted kind of confused me

“It seems that the target of this robbery is to stop the efforts we are making to mass-produce the first ever locally made car in Africa,” he stated, adding: “Other items stolen after a quick inventory conducted by the company soon after the incident include locally produced timing wheel, locally produced year camshaft, locally produced crankshaft, locally produced engine tappets, all 20 pieces each. Also stolen are 10 pieces of locally produced Z-600 engine blocks, 10 pieces of locally produced pistons, 4 pieces of engine block mounds, 4 pieces of top engine block moulds, 10 pieces of engine fly wheel and 2 pieces each of rear car and front mudguard moulds.

The moulds stolen took 10 years to design and build. In monetary terms they are valued over one billion Naira. But the problem is not the money but the time and energy it took to design and produce these moulds. To worsen the matter, our design notebook has also been stolen.”

He regarded the loss as a national economic disaster were the nation to appreciate the value of technological and intellectual property.

Izuogu therefore appealed to the Federal Government, the security agencies and all well-meaning Nigerians to assist in the recovery of the stolen items.

Does anyone have an update on the car/producer??

What is the make and model of this "cherry jeep"?

If a new car suddenly stops on the road, the skill that is needed to make it move is not the type that is immediately available in the vicinity. I remember those guys that sells "coil" during heavy traffic lipsrsealed lipsrsealed

Autos / Re: Mazda Specialist Wanted by Kafin(m): 6:35pm On Jan 20, 2009
@Rotimi,
You dont need a mazda-specialist to love-vendor your ride. Look for any autobody specialist that can understand your concept.

@Beecrofty,
Where are you located, and how far will you travel to service your car?
If the car is not moving, will you happily pay N10K for towing??
