Yet , you seem to forget that Nigeria on its own struggles to maintain stable democracy. No wonder their intervention in Africa is this minimal because they are afraid of being asked if their house is in order. SA remains the only true democracy in Africa.

SA is a democracy yet fails to recognise and support the democratic will expressed by majority of Ivoriens? Clearly you resort to stu.pidity when smacked with pure truth!

I am still wondering why it was only a South African Beeld newspaper that reported a phantom battle between the SANDF and M23 rebels whereas the only news available in the past 2 - 3 days is of fighting between the DRC Military and M23 rebels in Goma. Can AndrewZA and SAEngine please provide independent sources for your translated SANDF propaganda urgently. SANDF seems to have patented the art of fighting and killing GHOSTS!

I really, really want to accept this as fact, but to be honest, I can't. If you had said a SUB, that I would concour with since nigerian navy personnel had a couple of years (2-3years) back under-gone submarine training in pakistan.

Yes, separate account for impromptu funding exists. However, what are our immediate threats? I'd list them : terrorism/ islamic insurgency
Piracy/ oil bunkering
Continent wide Peacekeeping

Which of these require an above 4 billion dollars procurement of an AIrcraft carrier for? Do we live in the same region with IRAN? NO!! Pakistan? NO!!, India? NO!!! Egypt? NO!!! North/ south korea? NO!! Russia? NO!!!
Who are our neighbours, cameroun, togo, benin, ghana. Lagos state has a GDP that is bigger than each and every one of those countries.

Which leaves us with PIRACY, most piracy attacks occur of the coast of bayelsa, delta state. The navy has established an Air mobility group FOB in warri, another in bayelsa. It makes absolute sense to say the navy are going to receive 12-15 helicopters. Abi, do you pursue pirates with Aircraft carriers, when you have an Air mobility base, one in warri and another in bayelsa.

Would a country that flies 12 F-7 jets, wake up one morning and sign agreements for the purchase of an aircraft carrier? No way man.

Don't you know that if President GEJ does that, he would be impeached.

Our current needs are COIN based fighter jets (SU-25 frog foot), more MRAPS to replace our toyota hilux (soft skin), light attack helicopters, additional OPV's for the navy, helicopters and Frigates etc etc .......... Not an above 4 billion dollar waste of money on an aircraft carrier.

I'm a patriot, but I'm not buying this story.
I think u're basing ur arguement on Nigeria's current security threat to judge procurement of an expensive aircraft carrier.
Yes its freaking expensive.I am not fully backing the possibility of getting it soon.the govt still needs strong conviction to approve such a huge spending.
If you argue that Nigeria is living peacefully among friendly-non conflict states which automatically means she isn't under any threat except for the current wave of piracy, islamic militancy/terrorism.she needs not embark on a mission for an aircraft carrier.I can argue also that we don't need any SUB cause the SUBs are useless in any naval drill in this part of the continent.
I also noted that Nigeria is basing the military in the global direction.she is currently fighting to beat out more powerful militaries and be ranked above them.
No nation empowers its military without putting in future possibilties of external threats.
The more powerful any military is attracts natural envy.
The platform isn't a waste of resources because it isn't meeting our immediate needs.it is there for future advancements.
It probably won't be engaged after its first performance exercise but it at least puts it on the map that the Nigerian Navy got its aircraft carrier.that would boost Nigeria's superiority over its african competitors.

There is massive rigging in Nigerian elections. NIGERIA IS NOT A DEMOCRACY. Obansanjo was installed as president despite clear proof of vote rigging.

Obasanjo to be recognised despite rigged
Nigerian election
By Trevor Johnson and Chris Talbot 30 April 2003
The response of the Bush administration as well
as media reports makes clear that Olusegun Obasanjo and his People’s Democratic Party (PDP)
will be accepted as the legitimate victor in the
recent Nigerian elections, despite widespread
vote-rigging.
When it suits them the United States and other
western powers have raised their concerns about the legitimacy of an election in a
developing country. In Nigeria, however, despite
widespread reports of ballot box stuffing, under-
age voting and 100 percent returns from some
areas for the incumbent president, barely a
murmur can be heard. In a short statement, the US government states,
“Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral
Commission (INEC) on April 22 declared President
Olusegun Obasanjo the victor in last Saturday’s
presidential election” and “congratulates the
overwhelming majority of the Nigerian people for what was a peaceful exercise of their right to
vote in many parts of the country”. It merely calls
for all complaints to be taken to “competent
tribunals” to be considered “in a timely, impartial
and transparent manner.”
The New York Times initially labelled the elections as “botched”, described some of the
“irregularities” and said that Nigeria could not
“afford to ignore charges of regional
disenfranchisement.” It has since dutifully toned
down its criticisms, with an article on April 27
entitled “Nigeria Holds a ‘Credible’ Election. Is That Enough?” The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ran an
editorial headlined “Impressive but imperfect/
Despite fraud allegations, Nigerian election is
progress” while the Christian Science Monitor
commented that “given Nigeria’s long history of
military rule and rampant corruption, these elections were a relative success for civilian
control of the country and for attempts to
prevent voting fraud.”
The British BBC commented, “observers say that
Mr Obasanjo does enjoy considerable support
and probably would have won the election, even without the ‘over-zealousness’ of some of his
supporters.”
It goes on to say that since the difference
between Obasanjo’s total number of votes and
that of his nearest rival, Muhammadu Buhari, was
greater than the number of votes cast “where the worst irregularities occurred,” the overall
result should not be in doubt.
This forgiving approach to the ruling Nigerian
elite comes despite the obvious lack of progress
towards even a semblance of democratic rule
and the refusal of the wealthy ex-generals who run Nigeria to use any of the country’s oil wealth
to alleviate the http://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2003/04/

mr HRW, what is the essence of posting a 2003 report in 2013? does it mean that Nigeria's democracy has grown that the international community commended president Jonathan for the way it was conducted?

posting a 10 year old report shows you have no case. focus on building your own democracy while we build ours.

lemme ask you? if a war was to break out between south africa and Nigeria, who do you think will have more support? who do you think has more influence even within your SADC?
